ATMA (Ormco Corp, Glendora, Calif) T-loop spring (TTLS), preactivated with a gable bend distal to the loop, holds promise for producing controlled tipping of the canines and translation of the posterior segment. However, there is currently no consensus as to where the preactivated gable bend or the loop should be placed, what the height of the loop should be, or how the interbracket distance changes the moments produced. Using the Loop software program (dHal, Athens, Greece), we systematically modified a .017 x .025-in TTLS (10 x 6 mm) that was preactivated with a 45 degrees gable bend distal to the loop, and simulated the effects. As the gable bend was moved posteriorly, the moment increased at the posterior bracket more than it decreased at the anterior bracket. As the loop was brought closer to the anterior bracket, the posterior moment decreased at the same rate that it increased anteriorly. As the loop was increased in size, the moments increased both posteriorly and anteriorly. As the interbracket distance increased, the posterior moment decreased, and the anterior moment remained constant. We concluded that the size of the loop should be slightly increased, to 10 x 7 mm, and it should be placed 2 mm from the anterior bracket, with a preactivation bend of 45 degrees, 4 to 5 mm from the posterior bracket (after 4 mm of activation).

Trade-off between settling time and micropower consumption in MOS regulated cascode current sources as building parts in high-accuracy, current-switching D/A converters is analyzed. The regulation-loop frequency characteristic is obtained and difficulties to impose a dominant-pole condition to the resulting 2nd-order system are discussed. Raising pole frequencies while meeting consumption requirements is basically limited by parasitic capacitances. An alternative is found by imposing a twin-pole system in which design constraints are somewhat relaxed and settling slightly faster. Relationships between pole frequencies, transistor geometry and bias are established. Simulated waveforms obtained with PSpice of designed circuits following a voltage perturbation suggest a good agreement with theory. The proposed approach applied to the design of a micropower current-mode D/A converter improves its simulated settling performance.

Traditional pattern recognition techniques can not handle the classification of large datasets with both efficiency and effectiveness. In this context, the Optimum-Path Forest (OPF) classifier was recently introduced, trying to achieve high recognition rates and low computational cost. Although OPF was much faster than Support Vector Machines for training, it was slightly slower for classification. In this paper, we present the Efficient OPF (EOPF), which is an enhanced and faster version of the traditional OPF, and validate it for the automatic recognition of white matter and gray matter in magnetic resonance images of the human brain. © 2010 IEEE.

Feature selection aims to find the most important information from a given set of features. As this task can be seen as an optimization problem, the combinatorial growth of the possible solutions may be inviable for a exhaustive search. In this paper we propose a new nature-inspired feature selection technique based on the Charged System Search (CSS), which has never been applied to this context so far. The wrapper approach combines the power of exploration of CSS together with the speed of the Optimum-Path Forest classifier to find the set of features that maximizes the accuracy in a validating set. Experiments conducted in four public datasets have demonstrated the validity of the proposed approach can outperform some well-known swarm-based techniques. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

The purpose of this study is to carry on a thermoeconomic analysis at a biodiesel production plant considering the irreversibilities in each step (part I: biodiesel plant under study and functional thermoeconomic diagram [1]), making it possible to calculate the thermoeconomic cost in US$/kWh and US$/l of the biodiesel production, and the main byproduct generated, glycerin, incorporating the credits for the CO2 that is not emitted into the atmosphere (carbon credits). Assuming a sale price for both the biodiesel and the byproduct (glycerin), the annual revenue of the total investment in a plant with a capacity of 8000 t/year of biodiesel operating at 8000 h/year was calculated. The variables that directly or indirectly influence the final thermoeconomic cost include total annual biodiesel production, hours of operation, manufacturing exergy cost, molar ratio in the transesterification reaction, reaction temperature and pressure in the process. Depending on the increase or decrease in sale prices for both biodiesel and glycerin, the payback is going to significantly increase or decrease. It is evident that, in exergy terms, the sale of glycerin is of vital importance in order to reduce the biodiesel price, getting a shorter payback period for the plant under study. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. This paper describes a new methodology adopted for urban traffic stream optimization. By using Petri net analysis as fitness function of a Genetic Algorithm, an entire urban road network is controlled in real time. With the advent of new technologies that have been published, particularly focusing on communications among vehicles and roads infrastructures, we consider that vehicles can provide their positions and their destinations to a central server so that it is able to calculate the best route for one of them. Our tests concentrate on comparisons between the proposed approach and other algorithms that are currently used for the same purpose, being possible to conclude that our algorithm optimizes traffic in a relevant manner.

Treatment of severe compromised tooth in the maxillary anterior area still poses great challenge to the clinicians. Several treatment modalities have been proposed to restore the function and aesthetics in teeth with advanced periodontal disease. The present study aims to report a case of traumatic injury of a left-maxillary central incisor with ridge preservation, orthodontic movement, and implant therapy. A 45-year-old woman underwent the proposed treatment for her left central incisor: basic periodontal therapy, xenogenous bone graft, and guided bone regeneration (GBR). Six months after the graft procedure, orthodontic movement by means of alignment and leveling was made and a coronal displacement of the gingival margin and vertical bone apposition could be observed after 13 months of active movement. Afterwards, a dental implant was placed followed by a connective tissue graft and immediate provisionalization of the crown. In conclusion, orthodontic movement was effective to improve the gingival tissue and alveolar bone prior to implant placement favoring the aesthetic results. Six years postoperatively, the results revealed height and width alveolar bone gain indicating that the treatment proposed was able to restore all the functional and aesthetic parameters.

This study aimed to analyze of using a probiotic (Bacillus subtilis) in the diet of breeding matrinxa (Brycon amazonicus) taking into account the number of oocytes, fertilization rate, hatching and final biomass. The experiment was carried out from March to November 2008. Fifty animals with mean weight 2.35 +/- 0.31 kg and mean length 53.00 +/- 1.96 cm. Two treatments were used T(1) = control group and T(2) = 10 g probiotic kg(-1) food. The induced breeding was carried out with crude extract of carp pituitary. The result showed that the number of oocytes released, fertilization rate and hatching rates were 5%, 34% and 36% higher than control group. The final total biomass of the control group was 3.6% higher compared to animals treated with probiotic. Concluded that is viable to include Bacillus subtilis in diet of matrinxa for optimizing reproductive indicators.

This study examined a new conservation tillage tool, the rotary paraplow. Emphasis was placed on evaluating the tool's conservation potential using dimensionless graph analysis. The dynamic conditions of the soil were investigated in terms of physical soil properties. Having determined the variables to be measured, dimensional analysis was used to plan the experiments. Two variations were considered for each dependent variable (linear speed, working depth, and rotation velocity), totaling eight treatments, allotting in each an experimental strip with five data collection points. This arrangement totaled 16 experimental strips, with 80 data collection points for all variables. The rotary paraplow generates a trapezoidal furrow for planting with a very wide bottom and narrower at the top. The volumetric subsoiling action generates cracks on the sides of the band. Because of their specific geometry the blades of rotary paraplow generate a soil failure according to its natural crack angle, optimizing the energy use, while preserving the natural soil properties. Results showed the conservation character of the rotary paraplow, capable of breaking up clods for planting without changing the original physical soil properties.
