LiCoO2 powders were prepared by combustion synthesis, using metallic nitrates as the oxidant and metal sources and urea as fuel. A small amount of the LiCoO2 phase was obtained directly from the combustion reaction, however, a heat treatment was necessary for the phase crystallization. The heat treatment was performed at the temperature range from 400 up to 700 degreesC for 12 h. The powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and specific surface area values were obtained by BET isotherms. Composite electrodes were prepared using a mixture of LiCoO2, carbon black and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) in the 85:10:5% w/w ratio. The electrochemical behavior of these composites was evaluated in ethylene carbonate/dimethylcarbonate solution, using lithium perchlorate as supporting electrolyte. Cyclic voltammograms showed one reversible redox process at 4.0/3.85 V and one irreversible redox process at 3.3 V for the LiCoO2 obtained after a post-heat treatment at 400 and 500 degreesC.Raman spectroscopy showed the possible presence of LiCoO2 with cubic structure for the material obtained at 400 and 500 degreesC. This result is in agreement with X-ray data with structural refinement for the LiCoO2 powders obtained at different temperatures using the Rietveld method. Data from this method showed the coexistence of cubic LiCoO2 (spinel) and rhombohedral (layered) structures when LiCoO2 was obtained at lower temperatures (400 and 500 degreesC). The single rhombohedral structure for LiCoO2 was obtained after post-heat treatment at 600 degreesC. The maximum energy capacity in the first discharge was 136 mA g(-1) for the composite electrode based on LiCoO2 obtained after heat treatment at 700 degreesC. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. This work describes the encapsulation of titanium (IV) silsesquioxane into the supercavities of NH4USY ultra stabilized zeolite, after chemical treatment. The modified zeolite was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra, Nuclear magnetic resonance, scanning electronic microscopy, X-ray diffraction and thermogravity. This encapsulated titanium (IV) silsesquioxane can adsorb Azure A chloride after treatment with H3PO4, without modifier leaching problems. In an electrochemical study, the cyclic voltammograms of the graphite paste modified electrode, shows two redox couples with formal potential (E-0) -0. 1 V and 0.21 V to I and II redox couples respectively (v = 700 mV s(-1); Britton Robinson buffer (B-R) solution, pH 3) versus SCE ascribed to a monomer and dimmer of azure. This paper shows the use of ultra stabilized zeolite in the electrochemical field as host for molecules with nanometric dimensions. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The influence of hydrogen charging into a quenched and tempered boron steel membrane electrode (SAE 10B22) was studied using borate buffer (pH 8.4) and NaOH solutions (pH 12.7), with or without the addition of 0.01 M EDTA. At the hydrogen input side, hydrogen charging influenced cyclic voltammograms increasing the anodic charge of iron(II) hydroxide formation, and decreasing the donor density of passive films. These results suggest that the hydrogen ingress caused instability of metallic surface, increasing the surface area activity. (C) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Electrochemical investigation on the as-cast Ti-Mo alloys (4-20 Mo wt.%) applied as biomaterials in Na2SO4 and Ringer physiological solutions is reported. Analyses of the open-circuit potential indicated that all alloys present spontaneous passivation. SEM and cyclic voltammograms obtained in the Ringer solution showed that the samples studied do not present pitting corrosion at potentials up to 8 V (SCE), indicating high corrosion resistance. Open-circuit potential profiles of the anodic oxides growth in both solutions show that the presence of chloride ions during the anodization does not influence the oxides' chemical stability, and also clearly indicate that adding Mo to pure Ti improves the stability of the anodic oxides. All these results suggest Ti-Mo alloys promissory to be applied as biomaterials. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A simple and inexpensive way to fabricate arrays of gold microelectrodes is proposed. Integrated circuit chips are sawed through their middle, normal to the longest axis, leading to destruction of the silicon circuit and rupture of the gold wires that interconnect it with the external terminals. Polishing the resulting rough surface converts the tips of the wires embedded in the chip halves into arrays of gold microdisks of about 25 mu m diameter. The number of active microelectrodes (MEs), of an array depends on the number of pins in the chip, n, being typically (n/2)-4. These MEs can be used individually or externally interconnected in any combination. X-ray images of the chips and micrographs of the resulting surface of the polished arrays have revealed variable distances between neighbor MEs, which are, however, larger than 10 times the radius of the disks. This feature of the MEs prevents diffusional cross-talk between electrodes. The use of these microdisk electrodes for analytical purposes exhibits sigmoidal voltammograms, and chronoamperometric experiments confirm the nonlinear i vs. t(1/2) plots, typical for processes where radial diffusion prevails. Satisfactory uniformity was observed for the response of each electrode of an array, indicating similarity of geometry and disk areas. The potentialities of these MEs were demonstrated by the determination of cadmium at ppb levels using square wave voltammetry with preconcentration. Due to the relative ease with which these MEs can be manufactured and their good performance in (chemical) analysis, wide applications in electrochemistry and electroanalysis is envisioned.

The electrochemical behavior of SnO2-SbOx, based electrodes, with and without the addition of RuO2, was studied by cyclic voltammetry, service life measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 0.5 M H2SO4 the physical characteristics of these materials were investigated using SEM, EDX and XRD. The resulting cyclic voltammograms obtained using SnO2-SbOx, and SnO2-SbOx-RuO2(x), x = 30, 5, 1 and 0.4 % showed that the OER overpotential decreased with the addition of RuO2. In the repetitive triangular potential voltammetry applied to the SnO2 electrode without and with RuO2 (1%), a higher anodic current is observed during the first potential scan; it is explained in terms of the oxidation of the Ti substrate. The addition of 1% RuO2 increased the service life from 8 to 20 hours at 10 mAcm(-2), while at 50 mAcm(-2) this increase was from 1 to 8 hours. AC Impedance diagrams obtained for the Ti/SnO2-SbOx and Ti/SnO2-SbOx-RuO2 electrodes at the rest potential and at a potential in the OER region can be explained by a single equivalent circuit containing two elements in series. The results showed that the charge transfer resistance and the resistance of the oxide film are lower in the oxide film containing RuO2. Surface analysis of Ti/SnO2-SbOx, revealed that it is relatively porous and formed by clusters of small particles. The Ti/SnO2-SbOx-RuO2 (1%) film is more compact, though. XRD analysis showed that a Sn1-xTixO2 oxide is formed on the Ti/SnO2-SbOx with 1% and without RuO2 electrodes.

A study of the voltammetric behaviour of the food colours brilliant blue FCF (C.I. 42090), erythrosine (C. I. 45430) and quinolin e yellow (C. I. 47005) in the pH range 2-10 have been carried out by cathodic stripping voltammetry. At pH 4.5 (acetate buffer) with an accumulation potential of 0 V and accumulation time of 30 s, the voltammograms presented well-defined reduction peaks at potential - 0.76 V for brilliant blue FCF, - 0.85 V for quinoline yellow and - 0.54 V for erythrosine. Linear calibration graphs were obtained from 8 to 80 mug l(-1) brilliant blue, from 4 to 43 mug l(-1) quinoline yellow and from 10 to 70 mug l(-1) erythrosine. The method has been successfully applied to identify and quantify binary mixtures of these dyes and applied for determining brilliant blue FCF in commercial food products.

Electroactive films of iron tetrasulfonated phthalocyanine (FeTsPc) were assembled via the electrostatic layer-by-layer technique (LBL), in which FeTsPc layers were alternated with the polycationic poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAN). The multilayer formation was monitored via UV-Vis spectroscopy by measuring the increase in the Q Band of FeTsPc at 676 nm. Film thickness was estimated by profilometry as ca. 10 Angstrom per bilayer. Fourier transform infrared and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy suggested specific interactions between FeTsPc and PAR Cyclic voltammograms showed reproducible pairs of oxidation-reduction peaks at 0.92 mV and 0.70 mV, respectively, for a 50-bilayer PAH/FeTsPc film at 50 mV/s (vs Ag/AgNO3).

To assess the response of common sulfide minerals to oxidizing conditions, a methodology to immobilize mechanically solid particles on carbon surfaces (voltammetry of microparticles, VMP) was employed, to define the influence of the pyrrhotite content in pyrite-pyrrhotite mixtures. The influence of the galvanic interactions and local pH on the oxidation reaction of pyrite was also investigated. With this purpose, artificial two-mineral electrodes were constructed, ranging in weight from 20 to 80% pyrrhotite. The resulting cyclic voltammograms were analyzed and relative quantities of oxidation products were evaluated. The goal of this work was to define the boundary conditions, in terms of pyrrhotite content in the mixture, that determine the SO42-/S ratio obtained and to describe some parameters which influence this ratio: local pH and galvanic interactions.
