The knowledge of rheological characteristics can indicate the emulsions properties, thus, nowadays rheology is used in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries, even to study the influence of rheological additives on them. Ten emulsions were prepared with 5% and 10% of nonionic emulsifier. Two of them were used as controls while in the others were added thickening agents. Rheological analyses were performed. The results showed that all emulsions are non-Newtonian, thixotropics and viscoelastics fluids. The thickening agents could modify the rheological characteristics of the emulsions and knowing the influence of them is easy to adopt one to reach the desirable performance. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

This present study aimed at evaluating the effect of the addition of an emulsifier to diets containing soybean oil, poultry fat or their blend, on the performance, carcass traits, serum lipid levels, pancreatic lipase concentration and nutrient digestibility of broilers. A randomized block design was applied using a 3 x 2 factorial arrangement, with three fat sources (soybean oil, poultry fat, and a blend of 50% soybean oil and 50% poultry fat) and the addition or not of an emulsifier. In experiment I, broiler performance, carcass traits, serum cholesterol, HDL, and triglyceride levels, and pancreatic lipase activity in 42-day-old broilers were evaluated. In experiment II, dry matter (DM), ether extract (EE), crude protein (CP) and crude fiber (CF) coefficients of digestibility were analyzed. Broilers fed the diet containing soybean oil and emulsifier presented higher body weight, weight gain and better feed conversion ratio. When birds were fed poultry fat and the fat blend (soybean oil and poultry fat) and the emulsifier was added to the diets, pancreatic lipase concentration increased. It was concluded that the use of soybean oil, poultry fat and their blend does no in the diet does not influence the performance, carcass traits, or serum cholesterol, HDL and triglyceride levels of 42-day-old broilers. The addition of emulsifiers to diets containing poultry fat improves ether extract digestibility and increases the production and secretion of pancreatic lipase.

We have investigated the effect of mixing spontaneously formed dispersions of the cationic vesicle-forming dioctadecyldimethylammonium chloride and bromide (DODAX, with X being anions Cl- (C) or Br- (B)) with solutions of the micelle-forming nonionic ethylene oxide surfactants penta-, hepta-, and octaethyleneglycol mono-n-dodecyl ether, C12En (n = 5, 7, and 8), and the zwitterionic 3-(N-hexadecyl-N,N-dimethylammonio)propane sulfonate (HPS). We used for this purpose differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), turbidity, and steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy to investigate the vesicle-micelle (V-M) transition yielded by adding C12En and HPS to 1.0 mM vesicle dispersions of DODAC and DODAB. The addition of these surfactants lowers the gel-to-liquid crystalline phase transition temperature (T-m) of DODAC and DODAB, and the transition becomes less cooperative, that is, the thermogram transition peak shifts to lower temperature and broadens to disappear when the V-M transition is complete, the vesicle bilayer becomes less organized, and the T., decreases, in agreement with measurements of the fluorescence quantum yield of trans-diphenylpolyene (t-DPO) fluorescence molecules incorporated in the vesicle bilayer. Turbidity data indicate that the V-M transition comes about in three stages: first surfactants are solubilized into the vesicle bilayer; after saturation, the vesicles are ruptured, and, finally, the vesicles are completely solubilized and only mixed micelles are formed. The critical points of bilayer saturation and vesicle solubilization were obtained from the turbidity and fluorescence curves, and are reported in this communication. The solubility of DODAX is stronger for C12En than it is for HPS, meaning that C12En solubilizes DODAX more efficiently than does HPS. The surfactant solubilization depends slightly on the counterion, and varies according to the sequence C12E5 > C12E7 > C12E8 > HPS.

The interaction between the nonionic surfactant C(12)E(5) and a high molar mass (M = 5.94 x 10(5)) poly(ethylene oxide) (PEG) in aqueous solution has been examined as a function of temperature by dynamic light scattering and fluorescence methods over a broad concentration range. Clusters of small surfactant micelles form within the PEO coil, leading to its extension. The hydrodynamic radius of the complex increases strongly with temperature as well as with the concentrations of surfactant and polymer. At high concentrations of the surfactant, the coil/micellar cluster complex coexists with free C(12)E(5) micelles in the solution. Fluorescence quenching measurements show a moderate micellar growth from 155 to 203 monomers in PEO-free solutions of C(12)E(5) over a wide concentration range (0.02-2.5%) at 8 degrees C. Below 0.25% C(12)E(5), the average aggregation number (N) of the micelles is smaller in the presence of PEO than in its absence. However, N increases with increasing surfactant concentration up to a plateau value of about 270 at about 1.2% (ca. 30 mM) C(12)E(5). At high surfactant concentrations, N is larger in the presence of polymer than in its absence, a finding which is connected to a significant lowering of the clouding temperature due to the PEO at these compositions. Similar results of increasing aggregation number followed by a plateau were also found at a fixed concentration of surfactant (2.5%) and varied PEO.

Dynamic light scattering, surface tension, and clouding temperature have been monitored to elucidate the solution properties of mixed micelles formed between the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and the nonionic surfactant pentaethylene glycol mono-n-dodecyl ether (C12E5) over a wide range of surfactant concentration and temperature. Addition of 0.1 M NaCl shifts the relaxational modes to higher frequency and lowers the clouding temperature (T-c) of the nonionic surfactant solution by about 1 degrees C compared to the salt-free system. T-c for the mixed surfactant solutions is higher than that of the binary C12E5 solutions and depends sensitively on the concentration of the two surfactants but increases only slightly when the total surfactant concentration is increased at a given molar C12E5/SDS concentration ratio. With C12E5/SDS = 5.7, for example, T-c is 46.0 and 47.5 degrees C, respectively, at 5 and 70 mM of C12E5 the mixed solutions are homogeneous and stable and contain nonspherical micelles, which are close to monodisperse over a range of surfactant concentrations and temperature. The mixed system has a lower Krafft point than binary SDS solutions and shows an approximately ideal behavior in contrast to the binary C12E5 solution. The hydrodynamic radius (RH) of the mixed micelle increases with temperature as do C12E5 micelles in the binary solutions and also with increasing C12E5/SDS ratio. At 25 degrees C, the critical micelle concentration of the mixed solution lies between those of the individual surfactants and decreases as the C12E5/SDS ratio is increased.

Dynamic light scattering has been used to investigate ternary aqueous solutions of n-dodecyl octaoxyethylene glycol monoetber (C12E8) with high molar mass poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). The measurements were made at 20 °C, always below the cloud point temperature (Tc) of the mixed solutions. The relaxation time distributions are bimodal at higher PEO and surfactant concentrations, owing to the preacute of free surfactant micelles, which coexist with the slower component, representing the polymer coil/micellar cluster comptex. As the surfactant concentration is increased, the apparent hydrodynamic radius (RH) of the coil becomes progressively larger. It is suggested that the complex structure consists of clusters of micelles sited within the polymer coil, as previously concluded for the PEO-C12E8-water system. However. C12E8 interacts less strongly than C12E8 with PEO; at low concentrations of surfactant the complex does not contribute significantly to the total scattered intensity. The perturbation of the PEO coil radius with C12E8 is also smaller than that in the C12E8 system. The addition of PEO strongly decreases the clouding temperature of the system, as previously observed for C12E8/PEO mixtures in solution Addition of PEO up to 0.2% to C12E8 (10 wt %) solutions doss not alter the aggregation number (Nagg) of the micelles probably because the surfactant monomers are equally partitioned as bound and unbound micelles. The critical micelle concentration (cmc), obtained from the I1/I3 ratio (a measure of the dependence of the vibronic band intensities on the pyrene probe environment), does not change when PEO is added, suggesting that for neutral polymer/surfactant systems the trends in Nagg and the cmc do not unambiguously reflect the strength of interaction.

Background: Accurate early diagnosis of lung metastases is important for establishing therapeutic measures. Therefore, the present study aimed to compare survey thoracic radiographs and computerized tomography (CT) scans to specifically identify lung metastases in female dogs with mammary tumors. Methods: Twenty-one female dogs, weighing 3 to 34 kg and aged from 5 years to 14 years and 10 months, with mammary tumors were studied. In all dogs before the imaging examinations, fine-needle aspiration cytology of the mammary tumors was performed to confirm the diagnosis. Three-view thoracic radiographs were accomplished: right lateral, left lateral and ventrodorsal views. Sequential transverse images of the thorax were acquired on a spiral Scanner, before and after intravenous bolus injection of nonionic iodine contrast. Soft-tissue and lung windows were applied. All the mammary tumors were surgically removed and examined histologically. Results: The correlation between the cytological and histological results regarding presence of malignancy was observed in only 17 cases. In radiographic examinations, no dog displayed signs of lung metastases or thorax chest lesions. CT detected lung metastasis in two cases, while small areas of lung atelectasis located peripherally were found in 28.57% of the dogs. Conclusion: In this study population, spiral CT showed higher sensitivity than chest radiographies to detect lung metastasis; this indicates that CT should be performed on all female dogs with malignant mammary tumors.

Several different methods were used to investigate the vesicle-to-micelle transition induced by the addition of the nonionic surfactant octaethylene glycol n-dodecyl monoether (C12E8) to spontaneously formed vesicle dispersions of dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide and chloride (DODAX, X = Cl- and Br-). Dynamic light scattering reveals that fast mode micelles are formed upon addition of C12E6. The micellar mode becomes progressively dominant as the C12E8/DODAX molar ratio (R) is increased until the vesicle-to-micelle transition is complete. Turbidity, calorimetry, fluorescence quantum yield, and anisotropy measurements indicate two critical compositions: the first, R-sat, when the vesicle bilayer is saturated with C12E8 and the second, R-sol, which corresponds to the complete vesicle-to-micelle transition. Below R-sat the vesicles swell due to incorporation of the surfactant into the vesicle bilayer, and above R-sat mixed micelles and bilayer structures coexist, the determined R-sat and R-sol range from 0 to 1 and 4 to 6, respectively, depending on the surfactant counterion and the experimental method used. Cryo-transmission electron microscopy micrographs show that when R approximate to 4, micelles coexist with extended bilayer fragments. In pure DODAX (1.0 mM) dispersions, unilamellar vesicles are observed. According to the DSC results, C12E8 lowers the gel-to-liquid crystalline transition temperature, T-m, of DODAX and broadens the main transition peak which disappears around R approximate to 5 and 6 for DODAC and DODAB, respectively.

We have used isothermal titration calorimetry to investigate the vesicle-to-micelle transition in dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB) and chloride (DODAC) vesicle dispersions induced by the nonionic surfactant octaethylene glycol n-dodecyl monoether (C12E8) at room temperature. Small and giant unilamellar vesicles were prepared by sonication and without sonication, respectively, of the pure cationic surfactants at low concentrations in water. The titration of 1.0 mM DODAX (X = Cl- and Br-) by a concentrated micellar solution of C12E8 shows that the enthalpy of interaction (DeltaH(obs)) of C12E8 in micellar form with DODAX is always endothermic. The titration curves are understood on the basis of superposition of the enthalpies of partitioning of C12E8 into the bilayer, of micelle formation and of vesicle-to-micelle transformation. The enthalpy, DeltaH(obs), initially increases owing to the incorporation of C12E8 into the vesicle bilayer until the C12E8/DODAX saturation ratio (R-sat) is reached, then DeltaH(obs) decreases, in different ways for DODAB and DODAC, owing to degradation of vesicles and formation of mixed micelles and intermediary structures up to the C12E8/DODAX solubilization ratio, R-sol. Above R-sol only mixed micelles exist. The surfactant solubilization takes place in three stages. All the critical ratios are lower for DODAB than for DODAC, meaning that C12E8 solubilizes more strongly in DODAB for example, R-sat is 0.8 for DODAB and 1.2 for DODAC. Sonication has no significant effect on the transition.

Lipases from oilseeds have a great potential for commercial exploration as industrial enzymes. Lipases are used mixed with surfactants in cleaning and other formulated products, and accordingly, both components must be compatible with each other. This work presents the results of the effects of anionic, cationic and nonionic surfactants, polyethylene glycol and urea on the activity and stability of a lipase extracted of oilseeds from Pachira aquatica. The enzyme was purified and the spectrophotometric assays were done using p-nitrophenyl acetate (p-NPA) as substrate pH 7.5 and 25 degrees C. The activity was significantly enhanced by the cationic surfactant CTAB. Bile salts increased the lipase activity in the tested concentration range, whereas anionic and nonionic surfactants showed an inhibitory effect. Aqueous solutions of PEG activated the lipase and maximum activation (161%) occurred in PEG 12,000. This effect on lipase that can be due to exposition of some hydrophobic residues located in the vicinity of the active site or aggregation.
