Estimation of water transit time in soils under Amazon forest cover using variations in sigma18O values.

In an attempt to estimate the soil-water transit time using the variation in 18O values, a statistical model was used. This model is based on linear regression analysis applied to the values observed for soil water and rain water. The time obtained from these correlations represents the mean time necessary for the water to run from one collecting point to the next.-from Authors

Brasil - Argentina e o Sistema Regional de Salvaguardas Nucleares

In 2011, the Brazilian-Argentine Agency for Accounting and Control of Nuclear Materials (ABACC), created to administer the Common System of Accounting and Control of Nuclear Material (CSAC) has completed twenty years of existence. ABACC and the Quadripartite Agreement established with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are a special system of safeguards that presents itself as an important example of regional contribution to global nuclear proliferation. The paper presents some considerations about the process of understanding between Brazil and Argentina that resulted in the creation of ABACC, indicates succinctly some theoretical explanations of international relations for this process and, from some features of the Agency, relates how the ABACC experience could support nuclear weapons free zones.

Desenvolvimento de um protocolo de dosimetria para o tratamento de total skin irradiation (TSI)

A técnica radioterápica Total Skin Irradiation (TSI), utilizada para tratamento de Micose Fungóide e doenças similares, apresenta grande complexidade na sua dosimetria e implementação nos Serviços de Radioterapia. No SUS – Sistema Único de Saúde - do Brasil, só há esse tratamento no Serviço de Radioterapia do Hospital das Clínicas da UNICAMP (Campinas) e no Instituto Nacional do Câncer (INCA) (Rio de Janeiro). O objetivo deste trabalho é o estudo e o desenvolvimento de um protocolo de controle de qualidade e dosimetria a ser implementado na técnica utilizada no Serviço de Radioterapia do Hospital de Clínicas da Universidade Estadual de Campinas (HC - UNICAMP). Todos os estudos e análises para a elaboração do protocolo foram baseados no Report 23[1] da AAPM – American Association of Physicists in Medicine - e no TRS-398[3] da IAEA – International Atomic Energy Agency. Métodos de Calibração e Dosimetria de Aplicadores de Betaterapia

The sources of betatherapy for clinical use in Brazil are, the vast majority of strontium-90, radioactive element that is not produced in the country, and therefore requires importation of international laboratories accredited by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).The use of these resources is always limited the crediting of characteristic values supplied by the manufacturer tables that provide the nominal value of activity and dose distribution to determine the irradiation time of the injury. The Institute of Nuclear Energy Research (IPEN / CNEN-SP) has recently researching the emission profile of these types of radiation sources, and some jobs are being developed with ionization chambers extrapolation for the purpose of standardizing a systematic calibration sources betatherapy. Other studies using parallel measures dosimeters (TLD's) and simulations with the Monte Carlo method. Radiological films have also been used in studies of applicators dosimetric analysis of strontium-90. This paper seeks to analyze the different methods for calibration of applicators betatherapy, already consolidated in studies by examining the advantages and disadvantages of each procedure
