The microstructure evolution and mechanical behavior during large strain of a 0.16%C-Mn steel has been investigated by warm torsion tests. These experiments were carried out at 685°C at equivalent strain rate of 0.1 s . The initial microstructure composed of a martensite matrix with uniformly dispersed fine cementite particles was attained by quenching and tempering. The microstructure evolution during tempering and straining was performed through interrupted tests. As the material was reheated to testing temperature, well-defined cell structure was created and subgrains within lath martensite were observed by TEM; strong recovery took place, decreasing the dislocation density. After 1 hour at the test temperature and without straining, EBSD technique showed the formation of new grains. The flow stress curves measured had a peculiar shape: rapid work hardening to a hump, followed by an extensive flow-softening region. 65% of the boundaries observed in the sample strained to ε = 1.0 were high angle grain boundaries. After straining to ε = 5.0, average ferrite grain size close to 1.5 μm was found, suggesting that dynamic recrystallization took place. Also, two sets of cementite particles were observed: large particles aligned with straining direction and smaller particles more uniformly dispersed. The fragmentation or grain subdivision that occurred during reheating and tempering time was essential for the formation of ultrafine grained microstructure.

Purpose: This study used bovine ribs to comparatively assess the deformation, roughness, and mass loss for 3 different types of surface treatments with burs, used in osteotomies, for the installation of osseointegrated implants.Materials and Methods: The study used 25 bovine ribs and 3 types of helical burs (2.0 mm and 3.0 mm) for osteotomies during implant placement (a steel bur [G1], a bur with tungsten carbide film coating in a carbon matrix [G2], and a zirconia bur [G3]), which were subdivided into 5 subgroups: 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, corresponding to 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 perforations, respectively. The surface roughness (mean roughness [Ra], partial roughness, and maximum roughness) and mass (in grams) of all the burs were measured, and the burs were analyzed in a scanning electron microscope before and after use. Data were tabulated and statistically analyzed by use of the Kruskal-Wallis test, and when a statistically significant difference was found, the Dunn test was used. Results: There was a loss of mass in all groups (G1, G2, and G3), and this loss was gradual, according to the number of perforations made (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5). However, this difference was not statistically significant (P < .05). Regarding the roughness, G3 presented an increase in Ra, partial roughness, and maximum roughness (P < .05) compared with G2 and an increase in Ra compared with G1. There was no statistically significant difference (P > .05) between G1 and G2. The scanning electron microscopy analysis found areas of deformation in all the 2.0-mm samples, with loss of substrates, and this characteristic was more frequent in G3.Conclusions: The 2.0-mm zirconia burs had a greater loss of substrates and abrasive wear in the cutting area. They also presented an increased roughness when compared with the steel and the tungsten carbide coating film in carbon matrix. There was no statistically significant difference (P < .05) between G1 and G2 in any mechanical test carried out. Inspired in recent works of Biedenham [1, 2] on the realization of the q-algebra su(q)(2), We show in this note that the condition [2j + 1](q) = N-q(j) = integer, implies the discretization of the deformation parameter alpha, where q = e(alpha). This discretization replaces the continuum associated to ct by an infinite sequence alpha(1), alpha(2), alpha(3),..., obtained for the values of j, which label the irreps of su(q)(2). The algebraic properties of N-q(j) are discussed in some detail, including its role as a trace, which conducts to the Clebsch-Gordan series for the direct product of irreps. The consequences of this process of discretization are discussed and its possible applications are pointed out. Although not a necessary one, the present prescription is valuable due to its algebraic simplicity especially in the regime of appreciable values of alpha.

We analyze the behavior of solutions of nonlinear elliptic equations with nonlinear boundary conditions of type partial derivative u/partial derivative n + g( x, u) = 0 when the boundary of the domain varies very rapidly. We show that the limit boundary condition is given by partial derivative u/partial derivative n+gamma(x) g(x, u) = 0, where gamma(x) is a factor related to the oscillations of the boundary at point x. For the case where we have a Lipschitz deformation of the boundary,. is a bounded function and we show the convergence of the solutions in H-1 and C-alpha norms and the convergence of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the linearization around the solutions. If, moreover, a solution of the limit problem is hyperbolic, then we show that the perturbed equation has one and only one solution nearby.

An alternative theoretical method to simulate the structural deformation induced by Mn-doping in BaTiO3 is proposed. The periodic quantum-mechanical method is based on density functional theory at B3LYP level. The structural models were obtained from Rietveld refinement of the undoped and Mn doped BaTiO3 X-ray diffraction data. This modelization gives access to the dopant General effect on the electronic structure. In fact, the influence of the doing element itself on the electronic configuration is barely local: therefore, it is not included in the simulation. The simplicity of the model makes it available for working within a wide range of materials.(C) 2004 Published bv Elsevier B.V.

Nickel ferrite powders with a nominal NiFe2O4 composition were synthesized by combustion reaction using urea as fuel. The powder was obtained using a vitreous silica basin heated directly on a hot plate at 480 degrees C until self-ignition occurred. After combustion, the powder was calcined at 700 degrees C for 2 h. The formation of the spinel phase and the distribution of cations in the tetrahedral and octahedral sites of the crystal structure were investigated by the Rietveld method, using synchrotron X-ray diffraction data and Mossbauer spectroscopy. The material presented a crystallite size of 120 nm and magnetic properties. The resulting stoichiometry after the Rietveld refinement was (Fe-0.989(2) Ni-0.011(2)) [Fe-1.012(2) Ni-0.989(2)] O-4.

Statement of problem. Two problems found in prostheses with resilient liners are bond failure to the acrylic resin base and increased permanent deformation due to material aging.Purpose. This in vitro study evaluated the effect of varying amounts of thermal cycling on bond strength and permanent deformation of 2 resilient denture liners bonded to an acrylic resin base.Material and methods. Plasticized acrylic resin (PermaSoft) or silicone (Softliner) resilient lining materials were processed to a heat-polymerized acrylic resin (QC-20). One hundred rectangular specimens (10 X 10-mm(2) cross-sectional area) and 100 cylindrically-shaped specimens (12.7-mm diameter X 19.0-mm height) for each liner/resin combination were used for the tensile and deformation tests, respectively. Specimen shape and liner thickness were standardized. Specimens were divided into 9 test groups (n=10) and were thermal cycled for 200, 500, 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500, 3000, 3500, and 4000 cycles. Control specimens (n=10) were stored for 24 hours in water at 37degreesC. Mean bond strength, expressed as stress at failure (MPa), was determined with a tensile test using a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 5 mm/min. Analysis of failure mode, expressed as a percent (%), was recorded as either cohesive, adhesive, or both, after observation. Permanent deformation, expressed as a percent (%), was determined using ADA specification no. 18. Data from both tests were examined with a 2-way analysis of variance and a Tukey test (alpha=.05).Results. For the tensile test, Softliner specimens submitted to different thermal cycling regimens demonstrated no significantly different bond strength values from the control; however, there was a significant difference between the PermaSoft control group (0.47 +/- 0.09 MPa [mean +/- SD]) and the 500 cycle group (0.46 +/- 0.07 MPa) compared to the 4000 cycle group (0.70 +/- 0.20 MPa) (P<.05). With regard to failure type, the Softliner groups presented adhesive failure (100%) regardless of specimen treatment. PermaSoft groups presented adhesive (53%), cohesive (12%), or a combined mode of failure (35%). For the deformation test, there was no significant difference among the Softliner specimens. However, a significant difference was observed between control and PermaSoft specimens after 1500 or more cycles (1.88% +/- 0.24%) (P<.05).Conclusions. This in vitro study indicated that bond strength and permanent deformation of the 2 resilient denture liners tested varied according to their chemical composition.
