A new approach is proposed in this work for the treatment of boundary value problems through the Adomian's decomposition method. Although frequently claimed as accurate and having fast convergence rates, the original formulation of Adomian's method does not allow the treatment of homogeneous boundary conditions along closed boundaries. The technique here presented overcomes this difficulty, and is applied to the analysis of magnetohydrodynamic duct flows. Results are in good agreement with finite element method calculations and analytical solutions for square ducts. Therefore, new possibilities appear for the application of Adomian's method in electromagnetics.

The contents of some nutrients in 35 Brazilian green and roasted coffee samples were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Mn, and Zn), flame atomic emission photometry (Na and K) and Kjeldahl (N) after preparing the samples by wet digestion procedures using i) a digester heating block and ii) a conventional microwave oven system with pressure and temperature control. The accuracy of the procedures was checked using three standard reference materials (National Institute of Standards and Technology, SRM 1573a Tomato Leaves, SRM 1547 Peach Leaves, SRM 1570a Trace Elements in Spinach). Analysis of data after application of t-test showed that results obtained by microwave-assisted digestion were more accurate than those obtained by block digester at 95% confidence level. Additionally to better accuracy, other favorable characteristics found were lower analytical blanks, lower reagent consumption, and shorter digestion time. Exploratory analysis of results using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA) showed that Na, K, Ca, Cu, Mg, and Fe were the principal elements to discriminate between green and roasted coffee samples. ©2007 Sociedade Brasileira de Química.

Studies by thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) of the complexes [PtCl2L2] (L is PPh3, AsPh3, SbPh3), [PtLn] (n = 3, L is SbPh3; n = 4, L is PPh3, AsPh3); [(PtL3)2N2]; [(PtL3)2C2] and [Pt(CO)2L2] (L is SbPh3) are described. Analysis of the TG and DTA curves showed that Pt(II) complexes of the type [PtCl2L2] have a higher thermal stability than the corresponding Pt(0) complexes of the type [PtLn], with the exception of [Pt(SbPh3)3], which is more stable than [PtCl2(SbPh3)2]. Thermal stabilities of each of the complexes are compared with those of the others in the series. Mechanisms of thermal decomposition of complexes of the types [PtCl2L2] and [PtLn] are proposed. Residues of the samples were characterized by chemical tests and IR spectroscopy. The residue from the thermal decomposition of [PtCl2L2] (L is PPh3, AsPh3) and [Pt(PPh3)4] is metallic platinum. For [Pt(AsPh3)4] the residue is a mixture of Pt and As, whereas for the complexes containing SbPh3 the residues are mixtures of Pt and Sb. In these cases, the proportional contents of Pt and As or Pt and Sb correspond to the stoichiometry of these elements in the respective complexes. The complexes {[Pt(SbPh3)3]2N2}, {[Pt(SbPh3)3]2C2} lose N2 or the ethynediyl group at 130-150°C and are transformed into [Pt(SbPh3)3]. © 1995.

The babassu (Orbignya phalerata) is a native tree found in northern Brazil. Extracts of the babassu coconut have been widely used in industry. Babassu flour has about 60% starch, thus, besides nourishment it can be used as an alternative biofuel source. However, the properties of this starch lack of study and understanding. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the thermal behavior of raw babassu flour and its solid hydrolyzed fraction. The analyses were carried out using SHIMADZU DSC and TG thermic analyzers. The results demonstrated a reduction in thermal stability of the solid hydrolyzed fraction compared to raw matter. The kinetic parameters were investigated using non-isothermal methods and the parameters obtained for its decomposition process were an E(a) of 166.86 kJ mol(-1) and a frequency factor (beta) of 6.283 x 1014 min(-1); this was determined to be a first order reaction (n = 1). Diplopods feed organic matter in decomposition; however, some environmental factors can promote changes in tissues of these animals. Sewage sludge has been applied for recuperation of physical structure of degraded soil. This work analyzed the influence of the sludge from a city of So Paulo in the midgut of the diplopod Rhinocricus padbergi. After the exposition to sludge, the midgut was prepared for histological and ultra-structural analyses. After 1 week of exposition, there were various glycoprotein globules in the fat body, which appeared, ultrastructurally, little electron dense. In the animals exposed for 2 weeks, there was an intensive renovation of the epithelium with the invasion of regenerative cells, which was observed in the histological and ultra-structural analyses. These data showed that the sludge present various substances that were very hazardous for these animals; more studies were necessary before the application of this in agriculture.

Morphological differences among 6 species of marine fishes belonging to 2 subfamilies of the family Serranidae (Serraninae: Dules auriga, Diplectrum formosum, and D, radiale; Epinephelinae: Epinephelus marginatus, Mycteroperca acutirostris, and M. bonaci) were studied by the geometric morphometric method of thin-plate splines and multivariate analysis of partial-warp scores. The decomposition of shape variation into uniform and nonaffine components of shape change indicate that major differences among species are related to both components of shape variation. Significant differences were found among species with respect to the uniform components, but there is no clear separation of taxonomic groups related to these components, and species are instead separated on the basis of body height and caudal peduncle length. Non-uniform changes in body shape, in turn, clearly differentiate the species of Serraninae and Epinephelinae. These shape changes are probably related to differences in habitat and feeding habits among the species.

omeprazole is a substituted benzimidazole which suppresses gastric-acid secretion by means of H+, K+-ATPase inhibition. It is an optically active drug with the sulfur of the sulfoxide being the chiral center. This pro-drug can be easily converted into its respective sulfenamide at low pH. In this work, omeprazole has been studied in relation to racemization barrier and decomposition reaction. Quantum chemistry coupled to PCA chemometric method were used to find all minimum energy structures. Conformational analysis and calculation of racemization barriers were carried out by PM3 semiempirical method (Gaussian 98). The average racemization energy barrier for all minimum energy structures (43.56 kcal mol(-1)) can be related to the velocity constant in Eyring's equation. The enormous half-life time at 100 degrees C (9.04 x 10(4) years) indicates that the process cannot be observed in human time scale. on the other hand, the difference of free energy change (Delta(Delta G) = -266.78 kcal mol(-1)) for the decomposition reaction shows that the process is favorable to the sulfenamide formation. The highly negative Delta(Delta G) obtained for the decomposition reaction shows that this process is extremely exothermic. This result explains why omeprazole decomposes and does not racemize.
