The tetrahydroquinoline derivatives can be easily synthesized through Povarov reaction and have several important biological activities. This work describes a comparative study for the unequivocal assignment of molecular structure of different tetrahydroquinoline derivatives, through a complete analysis of NMR 1D and 2D NMR spectra (1H, 13C, COSY, HSQC, and HMBC), and the correlation this data with theoretical calculations of energy-minimization and chemical shift (δ), employing the theory level of DFT/B3LYP with set of the cc-pVDZ basis. For these derivatives the experimental analyses and the theoretical model adopted were sufficient to obtain a good description of its structures, and these results can be used to assign the structure of various others tetrahydroquinoline derivatives. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

This work describes the creation of heuristics rules based on 13C-NMR spectroscopy that characterize several skeletal types of diterpenes. Using a collection of 2745 spectra we built a database linked to the expert system SISTEMAT. Several programs were applied to the database in order to discover characteristic signals that identify with a good performance, a large diversity of skeletal types. The heuristic approach used was able to differentiate groups of skeletons based firstly on the number of primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary carbons, and secondly the program searches, for each group, if there are ranges of chemical shifts that identifies specific skeletal type. The program was checked with 100 new structures recently published and was able to identify the correct skeleton in 65 of the studied cases. When the skeleton has several hundreds of compounds, for example, the labdanes, the program employs the concept of subskeletal, and does not classify in the same group labdanes with double bounds at different positions. The chemical shift ranges for each subskeletal types and the structures of all skeletal types are given. The consultation program can be obtained from the authors. © 1997 - IOS Press. Solvents represent an important group of environmental pollutants to which people are exposed daily in the workplace. The physico chemical properties of solvents may result in disturbances to cellular structures, including damage to DNA. However, the effects of mixtures of solvents are not well known. Mutations caused by environmental agents are related to cancer development and other degenerative diseases. The work in a research laboratory that uses several types of solvents is equally predisposed to these hazards. In this study, we evaluated the mutagenicity of urine from 29 subjects exposed occupationally to solvents in a chemistry research laboratory and 29 subjects without occupational exposure (controls). Urine samples were collected in polyethylene containers at the end of the work shift. For the concentration and extraction of urine samples the XAD-2 resin was used with acetone as an eluting agent. Several strains of Salmonella typhimurium (TA100, TA98, TA97a, TA1535, YG1024) should be used to assess mutagenic susceptibilities among workers exposed to organic solvents. Different doses of extract (1.5; 3.0; 6.0 and 12.0 m/ equivalents of urine per plate) were tested on S. typhimurium strains TA100 and YG 1024, with and without metabolic activation. The mutagenic activity, measured in Salmonella typhimurium YGI1024 with S9 mix, was significantly greater in urine from workers than from controls (p <= 0.05). These results indicate the relevance of using biomarkers to assess the risk of occupational exposure to organic solvents.

Homogeneous catalysts prepared from rhodium trichloride in aqueous aromatic amines have been shown to reduce C-CI bonds under mild water gas shift conditions (T=100 degrees C, P-CO = 1.0 atm). In a 4-picoline/water solvent mixture, 1,2-dichloroethane is reduced to ethylene and ethane in yields compatible with the consumption of the reducing agent CO and with the formation of CO2. Variation of the catalyst solutions by using different substituted pyridines shows a pattern of catalytic activity parallel to that reported previously for H-2 production from the shift reaction, There is a moderate dependence of activity on the basicity of the aromatic amine, but a methyl group at the alpha-position exercises a strong negative steric effect. Long term studies show decrease of the activity with the time perhaps due to the build up of chloride in the medium. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

CCTO thin films were deposited on Pt(1 1 1)/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates using a chemical (polymeric precursor) and pressure method. Pressure effects on CCTO thin films were evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and optical properties which revealed that a pressure film (PF) is denser and more homogeneous than a chemical film (CF). Pressure also causes a decrease in the band gap and an increase in the photoluminescence (PL) emission of CCTO films which suggests that the pressure facilitates the displacement of Ti in the titanate clusters and the charge transference from TiO6 to [TiO5V0z], [TiO5V0z] to [CaO11V0z] and [TiO5V0z] to [CuO4]x. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.
