This work reports on the study about the luminescence behavior of Eu3+-O2- associates in Sr2SiO4 doped with Eu3+, or simultaneously doped with Eu3+ and Zn2+ ions, where the Zn2+ doping ion acts as a charge compensating agent. Both Sr2SiO4:Eu3+ and Sr2SiO4:Eu3+,Zn2+ emission spectra show two types D-5(0)-->F-7(0) type transitions, one type related to Eu3+ in the Sr2+ Site, at 577 and 580 nm and the other one related to Eu3+-O2- associates, at 574 nm. Excitation spectra present two CT bands at 275 and 324 nm related to each emission center, respectively. Comparing the relative intensities between the emission spectra, the 0-->0 transition at 574 nm assigned to Eu3+-O2- associates in the Sr2SiO4:Eu3+ emission spectrum is much more intense than the same transition in the Sr2SiO4:Eu3+,Zn2+ emission spectrum. Moreover, in the Sr2SiO4:Eu3+ excitation spectrum, the intensity ratio between the CT band related to the Eu3+-O2- emission center and Eu3+ F-7-->L-5(6) transition is also larger than in the Sr2SiO4:Eu3+,Zn2+ one. Therefore, the presence of Zn2+ species provides an extra charge compensating mechanism, which decreases the formation of Eu3+-O2- associates. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work, spinels with the general formula Zn2-xCoxTiO4 were synthesized by the polymeric precursor method and thermally treated at 1,000 A degrees C. The powder precursors were characterized by TG/DTA. A decrease in the DTA peak temperature with the amount of zinc was observed. After the thermal treatment, the characterizations were performed by XRD, IR, colorimetry and UV/VIS spectroscopy. The XRD patterns of all the samples showed the presence of the spinel phase. Infrared spectroscopy showed the presence of ester complexes for Zn2TiO4 after thermal treatment at 500 A degrees C, which disappeared after cobalt addition, indicating that organic material elimination was favored.

Objective: To assess the setting time (ST), flow (FL), radiopacity (RD), solubility (SB) and dimensional change following setting (DC) of different sealers (AH Plus (R), Polifil, Apexit Plus (R), Sealapex (R), Endomethasone (R) and Endofill (R)) according to American National Standards Institute/American Dental Association (ANSI/ADA) Specification 57. Material and methods: Five samples of each material were used for each test. For ST, cast rings were filled with sealers and tested with a Gillmore needle. For FL, the sealer was placed on a glass plate. After 180 s, another plate with 20 g and a load of 100 g were applied on the material, and the diameters of the discs formed were measured. In RD, circular molds were filled with the sealers, radiographed and analyzed using Digora software. For SB, circular molds were filled with the sealers, a nylon thread was placed inside the material and another glass plate was positioned on the set, pressed and stored at 37 degrees C. Samples were weighed, placed in water, dried and reweighed. The water used for SB was analyzed by atomic absorption spectrometry. For DC, circular molds were filled with the sealers, covered by glass plates and stored at 37 degrees C. Samples were measured and stored in water for 30 days. After this period, they were dryed and measured again. Results: Regarding ST, AH Plus (R), Apexit (R) and Endofil (R) sealers are in accordance with ANSI/ADA standards. Endomethasone's manufacturer did not mention the ST; Polifil is an experimental sealer and Sealapex (R) did not set. Considering RD, SB and DC, all sealers were in accordance with ANSI/ADA. The spectrometric analysis showed that a significant amount of K+ and Zn2(+) ions was released from Apexit Plus (R) and Endofill (R), respectively. Conclusion: Except for DC, all other physicochemical properties of the tested sealers conformed to ANSI/ADA requirements.

A RNase of Aspergillus flavipes (IZ:1501) was purified from culture medium by chromatography on DEAE-cellulose and Sephadex G50 columns, after 96 h of cultivation. The molecular weight of the RNase was estimated to be 15 kD by gel filtration using Sephadex G100, and the optimum pH and temperature were 4.0 and 55 degrees C, respectively. Catalytic activity was inhibited by Hg2+, Ag+, Fe3+, Co2+ and Zn2+. The enzyme showed guanosine specificity producing only 3'-GMP from yeast RNA.

Estudos termogravimétricos e calorimétricos diferenciais para ditiocarbamatos de NH4+, Na+, Zn2+, Cd2+ e Pb2+, derivados de aminas cíclicas contendo nitrogênio como heteroátomos, foram realizados em atmosferas de ar e nitrogênio, para avaliar a influência da tensão angular dos anéis na decomposição térmica destes compostos, em relação à formação de tiocianatos metálicos como via de decomposição. Os intemediários formados foram caracterizados por difração de raios-X, tendo sido encontrados oxissulfatos de Zn2+, Cd2+ e Pb2+, sob atmosfera de ar, o que sugere a decomposição térmica nestas condições como via sintética para estes compostos. Os produtos de decomposição final obtidos foram sulfetos metálicos sob nitrogênio e óxidos dos metais de transição e sulfato de sódio sob ar. Entalpias de fusão são também descritas, com base nos resultados de DSC.

SnO2 ceramics doped with ZnO and WO3 were prepared by mixed oxide method. The effect of ZnO and WO3 additives could be explained by the substitution of Sn4+ by Zn2+ and W6+. The addition of WO3 inhibits the grain growth due to the segregation of SnZnWO8 and ZnWO6 at the grain boundaries without strong influence on the densification process. The electrical characterization (log E x log J) shows that the ternary system SnO2-ZnO-WO3 exhibits a very high resistivity of around 10(14) Omega M. Independently of the WO3 concentration, the electrical conductivity of the Sn02-ZnO-WO3 system is always lower than that of the undoped tin dioxide. (C) 2005 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. A fibrino(geno)lytic nonhemorrhagic metalloprotease (neuwiedase) was purified from Bothrops neuwiedi snake venom by a single chromatographic step procedure on a CM-Sepharose column, Neuwiedase represented 4.5% (w/w) of the crude desiccated venom, with an approximate Mr of 20,000 and pI 5.9, As regards the amino acid composition, neuwiedase showed similarities with other metalloproteases, with high proportions of Asx, Glx, Leu, and Ser, Atomic absorption spectroscopy showed that one mole of Zn2+ and one mole of Ca2+ were present per mole olf protein. The cDNA encoding neuwiedase was isolated by RT-PCR from venom gland RNA, using oligonucleotides based on the partially determined amino-acid sequences of this metalloprotease. The fall sequence contained approximately 594 bp, which codified the 198 amino acid residues with an estimated molecular weight of 22,375. Comparison of the nucleotide and amino acid sequences of neuwiedase with those of other snake venom metalloproteases showed a high level of sequential similarity, Neuwiedase has two highly conserved characteristics sequences H(142)E(143)XXH(146)XXG(140)XXH(152) and C164I165M166. The three-dimensional structure of neuwiedase was modeled based on the crystal structure of Crotalus adamanteus Adamalysin II. This model revealed that the zinc binding site region showed a I high structural similarity with other metalloproteases,, the proteolyitc specificity, using the B beta-chain of oxidized insulin as substrate, was shown to be directed to the Ala(14)-Leu(15) and Tyr(16)-Leu(17) peptide bonds which were preferentially hydrolyzed. Neuwiedase is a A alpha,B beta fibrinogenase, Its activity upon the A alpha chain of fibrinogen was detected within 15 min of incubation. The optimal temperature and pH for the degradation of both A alpha and B beta chains were 37 degrees C and 7.4-8.0, respectively. This activity was inhibited by EDTA and 1,10-phenantroline, Neuwiedase also showed proteolytic activity upon fibrin and some components of the extracellular matrix. However, it did not show TAME esterase activity and was not able to inhibit platelet aggregation. (C) 2000 Academic Press.

Zinc plays a very important role in animal and human metabolism. Nowadays, it is one of the most extensively studied trace element, since its sphere of action has been demonstrated to be very broad. From the biochemical standpoint, it controls more than 300 different enzymes, many of them involved with intermediary metabolism, DNA and RNA synthesis, gene expression, and immunocompetence. It also plays a significant role in hormonal homeostasis, since it can interact with almost all hormones. Zn2+ is closely related to the thyroid and steroid hormones, insulin, parathormone, and pituitary hormones, particularly prolactin (PRL). Zn2+ can inhibit PRL secretion within a range of physiologically and pharmacologically relevant concentrations. This property has raised the possibility of clinical applications of zinc. In this article, we review the Literature on the subject in an attempt to provide a comprehensible general view.

We have pointed Out that. zinc-based particles obtained from zinc acetate sol-gel route is a mixture of quantum-sized ZnO nanoparticles, zinc acetate, and zinc hydroxide double salt (Zn-HDS). Aiming the knowledge of the mechanisms involved in the formation of ZnO and Zn-HDS phases, the thermohydrolysis of ethanolic zinc acetate solutions induced by lithium hydroxide ([LiOH]/[Zn2+] = 0.1) or water ([H2O]/[Zn2+] = 0.05) addition was investigated at different isothermal temperatures (40, 50, 60 and 70 degrees C) by in situ measurements of turbidity, UV-vis absorption spectra and extended X-ray absorption fine structures (EXAFS). Only the growth of ZnO nanoparticles was observed in sol prepared with LiOH, while a two-step process was observed in that prepared with water addition, leading the fast growth of Zn-HDS and the formation of ZnO nanoparticles at advanced stage. A mechanism of dissolution/reprecipitation governed by the water/ethanol proportion is proposed to account for relative amount of ZnO. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

SnO2-based varistors doped with ZnO and WO3 were prepared by mixed oxide method. Experimental evidence shows that the increase in ZnO amount increases the volume and microstrain of unit cell while the WO3 promotes a decrease. The effect of ZnO and WO3 additives could be explained by the substitution of Sn4+ by Zn2+ and W6+. The addition of WO3 inhibits the grain growth due to the segregation in the grain boundary without influence in the densification of the samples. Besides that, an increase in the electrical resistance of the SnO2-ZnO-WO3 system was observed independent of the WO3 concentration. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The objectives of the present study were to investigate the frequencies of hyperprolactinemia and hypozincemia in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) or continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), the associations between blood levels of zinc (Zn2+) and hormones, and dietary zinc intake amount and its relation to zincemia. We studied 28 patients (14 HD and 14 CAPD) who had their blood levels of Zn2+, prolactin (PRL), parathyroid hormone (PTH), and gonadotropins (LH, FSH) evaluated. Thirteen patients had dietary nutrient amounts evaluated from a 3-d nutritional record. Hyperprolactinemia occurred in 29% patients (HD = CAPD), hypozincemia in 62% (20% HD and 42% CAPD), and low dietary Zn2+ intake in 90% of patients. No correlation among blood concentration of Zn2+ and PRL, PTH, LH, and FSH were observed in the two modalities of dialysis or between zincemia and Zn2+ ingestion. We concluded that the occurrence of hyperprolactinemia and hypozincemia were not related to dialysis modality and that zincemia did not reflect the observed low dietary intake of Zn2+.
