EMOTIONAL BURDEN IN CAREGIEVERS of PATIENTS WITH OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIEVE DISORDER

The objective of this study was to evaluate the emotional burden, psychological morbidity, and level of family accommodation in caregivers of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients, according to sociodemographic and clinical factors. Methods: Fifty Brazilian DSM-IV OCD patients and their caregivers were evaluated using the Family Accommodation Scale, the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI), the Self-Report Questionnaire (caregivers), the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale, and the Beck Depression Inventory (patients). Most caregivers (80%) were aged between 30 and 59 years and lived with the patient (88%). Results: Forty-two percent presented a common mental disorder and their mean ZBI score was 28.9. Family accommodation was moderate in 26% and severe or very severe in 24%. Caregivers' levels of psychological morbidity, accommodation, and emotional burden were associated with each other and with the severity of patient obsessive-compulsive and depressive symptoms. Conclusions: The results suggest that caregivers of OCD patients have important levels of burden and psychological morbidity and should receive orientation and support to minimize this emotional impact. Taenia saginata: polymerase chain reaction for taeniasis diagnosis in human fecal samples

The taeniasis-cysticercosis complex is a zoonosis of great medical and economic importance where humans play an important role as the carrier of adult stage of Taenia solium and Taenia saginata. This paper describes PCR standardization that can be applied in human fecal samples for taeniasis diagnosis. DNA extraction was achieved with DNAzol reagent, after egg disruption with glass beads. DNA prepared from fecal specimens was first purified and PCR amplified generating fragments of 170 and 600 bp. Ocorrência de larva migrans na areia de áreas de lazer das escolas municipais de ensino infantil, Araçatuba, SP, Brasil

A areia das áreas de lazer de escolas podem constituir vias de transmissão para várias zoonoses parasitárias, representando risco potencial para as crianças que brincam nesses locais. Foi avaliada a ocorrência de agentes de larva migrans em 28 escolas municipais de ensino infantil de Araçatuba, SP. Foram colhidas 535 amostras de areia das áreas de lazer dessas escolas nos meses de janeiro (verão) e julho (inverno) de 1997 para estabelecimento da freqüência de isolamento de larvas e/ou ovos de Ancylostoma spp. e de ovos de Toxocara spp., pelos métodos de centrífugo-flutuação e de Baermann, respectivamente. A presença de larvas de Ancylostoma spp. foi observada, em pelo menos uma das amostras, em 35,7% (10/28) das amostras da primeira colheita (verão) e em 46,4% (13/28) quando da segunda colheita (inverno). Ovos de Toxocara spp. não foram encontrados e a presença de ovos de Ancylostoma spp. foi observada em 0,56% (3/535) das amostras.

Combination of Tevatron Searches for the Standard Model Higgs Boson in the W+W- Decay Mode

Combined Tevatron upper limit on gg -> H -> W+W- and constraints on the Higgs boson mass in fourth-generation fermion models

We combine results from searches by the CDF and D0 collaborations for a standard model Higgs boson (H) in the process gg -> H -> W+W- in p (p) over bar collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider at root s = 1.96 TeV. With 4.8 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity analyzed at CDF and 5.4 fb(-1) at D0, the 95% confidence level upper limit on sigma(gg -> H) x B(H -> W+W-) is 1.75 pb at m(H) = 120 GeV, 0.38 pb at m(H) = 165 GeV, and 0.83 pb at m(H) = 200 GeV. Assuming the presence of a fourth sequential generation of fermions with large masses, we exclude at the 95% confidence level a standard-model-like Higgs boson with a mass between 131 and 204 GeV.

Avaliação da qualidade de frutos de café atacados por Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann, 1824) (Diptera: Tephritidae)

Foram usadas plantas de Coffea arabica L., variedade Catuaí Vermelho, localizadas no Campus da Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz - USP, Piracicaba,SP, para avaliação dos danos que Ceratitis capitata (Wied., 1824) pode causar aos frutos do cafeeiro. Os resultados mostraram que o ataque de C. capitula não causou queda prematura dos frutos, mas aumentou a queda de cerejas e foram encontradas, fortes evidências, com base na atividade da enzima polifenol oxidase e lixiviação de potássio, que cerejas atacadas podem produzir bebida de café de qualidade inferior.

CRYSTALLINE FRAGMENTS IN GLASSES

The nature of tetrahedral molecular fragments is investigated in SiSe2 glasses using the molecular-dynamics method. The glass consists of both edge-sharing (ES) and corner-sharing tetrahedra. The ES tetrahedra are the building blocks of chain-like-molecular fragments. The two-edge-sharing tetrahedra are the nucleus, and corner-sharing configurations provide connecting hinges between fragments. Statistics of rings and fragments reveals that threefold and eightfold rings are most abundant, chainlike fragments that are typically 10-15 angstrom long occur mostly in eightfold rings, and the longest fragments occur in elevenfold rings.

Combination of CDF and D0 measurements of the W boson helicity in top quark decays

We report the combination of recent measurements of the helicity of the W boson from top quark decay by the CDF and D0 collaborations, based on data samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of 2.7-5.4fb -1 of pp̄ collisions collected during Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Combining measurements that simultaneously determine the fractions of W bosons with longitudinal (f 0) and right-handed (f +) helicities, we find f 0=0.722±0.081[±0.062(stat)±0.052(syst)] and f +=-0.033±0.046[±0.034(stat)±0.031(syst)]. Combining measurements where one of the helicity fractions is fixed to the value expected in the standard model, we find f 0=0.682±0. 057[±0.035(stat)±0.046(syst)] for fixed f + and f +=-0.015±0.035[±0.018(stat)±0.030(syst)] for fixed f 0. The results are consistent with standard model expectations. © 2012 American Physical Society.

Combination of the top-quark mass measurements from the Tevatron collider

The top quark is the heaviest known elementary particle, with a mass about 40 times larger than the mass of its isospin partner, the bottom quark. It decays almost 100% of the time to a W boson and a bottom quark. Using top-antitop pairs at the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider, the CDF and D0 Collaborations have measured the top quark's mass in different final states for integrated luminosities of up to 5.8fb -1. This paper reports on a combination of these measurements that results in a more precise value of the mass than any individual decay channel can provide. It describes the treatment of the systematic uncertainties and their correlations. The mass value determined is 173.18±0.56(stat)±0.75(syst)GeV or 173.18±0.94GeV, which has a precision of ±0.54%, making this the most precise determination of the top-quark mass. © 2012 American Physical Society.

High-pressure assisted sintering of Ti-20Si-10B and Ti-10Si-5B powders

This work presents the structural characterization of Ti-10Si-5B and Ti-20Si-10B (at-%) alloys produced by high-pressure assisted sintering. Sintering was performed in air at 1100 and 1200°C for 60 s using pressure levels of 5 GPa. Structural evaluation of sintered samples was conducted by means of scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry. Samples were successfully consolidated after sintering, which presented theoretical density values higher than 99%. The microstructures of the sintered Ti-10Si-5B and Ti-20Si-10B alloys revealed the presence of the TiSS, TiB, TiB2, Ti5Si3, Ti5Si4, TiSi, and TiSi2.phases. A small amount of Ti6Si2B was formed after high-pressure assisted sintering of the Ti-20Si-10B alloy (5GPa, 1100°C for 60 s) indicating that equilibrium structures were not achieved during short sintering times. No oxygen and carbon contamination was detected in structures of Ti-Si-B alloys after high-pressure sintering at 1100 and 1200°C without controlled atmosphere. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.
