Measurements of the third harmonic of the AC-susceptibility were employed to determine the boundaries of the linear regime of the magnetic response of Nb powder. Non-linear contributions to the magnetic response reveal the occurrence of a structured phase, disappearing as the vortex lattice melts to the liquid state. A systematic study of the third harmonic was conducted to determine how its onset temperature depends on experimental parameters, such as the frequency and amplitude of the excitation field. The melting line (ML) has been extracted from the onset temperature measured at low-frequencies and low-excitation fields in the presence of DC magnetic fields. The study indicates that the ML can be described by a 3D vortex-glass model, except at lower fields, where the system experiences a depinning crossover, and the best description of the experimental data is provided by a 3D Bose-glass model. Studies of the third harmonic of the AC-susceptibility were conducted to detect the boundaries of the linear regime of the magnetic response of granular Nb samples. These studies reveal the extent of the region, on the phase diagram, where the magnetic response is linear, which corresponds to the disordered phase of Vortex Matter. The present work addresses the correlation between a linear response and experimental parameters such as the frequency and the amplitude of the excitation field. The order-disorder border has been extracted from the onset temperature of the third harmonic measured at low-frequencies and low-excitation fields in the presence of dc magnetic fields. © 2008 IOP Publishing Ltd.

The research trend for harvesting energy from the ambient vibration sources has moved from using a linear resonant generator to a non-linear generator in order to improve on the performance of a linear generator; for example, the relatively small bandwidth, intolerance to mistune and the suitability of the device for low-frequency applications. This article presents experimental results to illustrate the dynamic behaviour of a dual-mode non-linear energy-harvesting device operating in hardening and bi-stable modes under harmonic excitation. The device is able to change from one mode to another by altering the negative magnetic stiffness by adjusting the separation gap between the magnets and the iron core. Results for the device operating in both modes are presented. They show that there is a larger bandwidth for the device operating in the hardening mode compared to the equivalent linear device. However, the maximum power transfer theory is less applicable for the hardening mode due to occurrence of the maximum power at different frequencies, which depends on the non-linearity and the damping in the system. The results for the bi-stable mode show that the device is insensitive to a range of excitation frequencies depending upon the input level, damping and non-linearity.

This paper concerns an investigation into the use of cubic nonlinearity in a vibration neutralizer to improve its effectiveness. It is assumed that the frequency of the harmonic excitation is well above the resonance frequency of the machine to which the neutralizer is attached, and that the machine acts as a simple mass. It is also assumed that the response of the system is predominantly at the harmonic excitation frequency of the machine. The harmonic balance method is used to analyze the system. It is shown how the nonlinearity has the effect of shifting the resonant peak to a higher frequency away from the tuned frequency of the neutralizer so that the device is robust to mistune. In a linear neutralizer this can only be achieved by adding mass to the neutralizer, so the nonlinearity has a similar effect to that of adding mass. Some characteristic features are highlighted, and the effects of the system parameters on the performance are discussed. It is shown that, for a particular combination of the system parameters, the effect of the nonlinearity is also to increase the bandwidth of the device compared to the linear neutralizer with similar mass and damping. Some approximate expressions are derived, which facilitate insight into the parameters which influence the dynamics of the system. The results are validated by some experimental work. The scientific question addressed in this work is: what hides beneath first order kinetic constant k (s(-1)) measured for hybridization of a DNA target on a biosensor surface. Kinetics hybridization curves were established with a 27 MHz quartz microbalance (9 MHz, third harmonic) biosensor, constituted of a 20-base probe monolayer deposited on a gold covered quartz surface. Kinetics analysis, by a known two-step adsorption-hybridization mechanism, is well appropriate to fit properly hybridization kinetics curves, for complementary 20-base to 40-base targets over two concentration decades. It was found that the K-1 (M-1) adsorption constant, relevant to the first step, concerns an equilibrium between non hybridized targets and hybridized pre-complex and increases with DNA target length. It was established that k(2) (s(-1)), relevant to irreversible formation of a stable duplex, varies in an opposite way to K-1 with DNA target length. (C) 2012 Published by Elsevier B.V.

This paper presents an investigation into some practical issues that may be present in a real experiment, when trying to validate the theoretical frequency response curve of a two degree-of-freedom nonlinear system consisting of coupled linear and nonlinear oscillators. Some specific features, such as detached resonance curves, have been theoretically predicted in multi degree-of-freedom nonlinear oscillators, when subject to harmonic excitation, and the system parameters have been shown to be fundamental in achieving such features. When based on a simplified model, approximate analytical expression for the frequency response curves may be derived, which may be validated by the numerical solutions. In a real experiment, however, the practical achievability of such features was previously shown to be greatly affected by small disturbances induced by gravity and inertia, which led to some solutions becoming unstable which had been predicted to be stable. In this work a practical system configuration is proposed where such effects are reduced so that the previous limitations are overcome. A virtual experiment is carried out where a detailed multi-body model of the oscillator is assembled and the effects on the system response are investigated.

Linear resonant harvesters have been the most common type of generators used to scavenge energy from mechanical vibrations. When subject to harmonic excitation, good performance is achieved once the device is tuned so that its natural frequency coincides with the excitation frequency. In such a situation, the average power harvested in a cycle is proportional to the cube of the excitation frequency and inversely proportional to the suspension damping, which is sought to be very low. However, a very low damping involves a relatively long transient in the system response, where the classical formulation adopted for steady-state regimes do not hold. This paper presents an investigation into the design of a linear resonant harvester to scavenge energy from time-limited harmonic excitations involving a transient response, which could be more likely in some practical situations. An application is presented considering train-induced vibrations.

Successful experiments in nonlinear vibrations have been carried out with cantilever beams under harmonic base excitation. A flexible slender cantilever has been chosen as a convenient structure to exhibit modal interactions, subharmonic, superharmonic and chaotic motions, and others interesting nonlinear phenomena. The tools employed to analyze the dynamics of the beam generally include frequency- and force-response curves. To produce force-response curves, one keeps the excitation frequency constant and slowly varies the excitation amplitude, on the other hand, to produce frequency-response curves, one keeps the excitation amplitude fixed and slowly varies the excitation frequency. However, keeping the excitation amplitude constant while varying the excitation frequency is a difficult task with an open-loop measurement system. In this paper, it is proposed a closed-loop monitor vibration system available with the electromagnetic shaker in order to keep the harmonic base excitation amplitude constant. This experimental setup constitutes a significant improvement to produce frequency-response curves and the advantages of this setup are evaluated in a case study. The beam is excited with a periodic base motion transverse to the axis of the beam near the third natural frequency. Modal interactions and two-period quasi-periodic motion are observed involving the first and the third modes. Frequency-response curves, phase space and Poincaré map are used to characterize the dynamics of the beam.

Some orbital characteristics of lunar artificial satellites is presented taking into account the perturbation of the third-body in elliptical orbit and the non-uniform distribution of mass of the Moon. We consider the development of the non-sphericity of the Moon in zonal spherical harmonics up to the ninth order and sectorial harmonic C 22 due to the lunar equatorial ellipticity. The motion of the artificial satellite is studied under the single-averaged analytical model. The average is applied to the mean anomaly of the satellite to analyze low-altitude orbits which are of highest importance for future lunar missions. We found families of frozen orbits with long lifetimes for the problem of an orbiter travelling around the Moon.
