It is believed that the dissolution of chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) in acid medium can be accelerated by the addition of Cl- ions, which modify the electrochemical reactions in the leaching system. Electrochemical noise analysis (ENA) was utilized to evaluate the effect of the Cl- ions and Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans on the oxidative dissolution of a CPE-chalcopyrite (carbon paste electrode modified with chalcopyrite) in acid medium. The emphasis was on the analysis of the admittance plots (Ac) calculated by ENA. In general, a stable passive behavior was observed, mainly during the initial stages of CPE-chalcopyrite immersion, characterized by a low passive current and a low dispersion of the Ac plots, mainly after bacteria addition. This can be explained by the adhesion of bacterial cells on the CPE-chalcopyrite surface acting as a physical barrier. The greater dispersions in the Ac plots occurred immediately after the Cl- ions addition, in the absence of bacteria characterizing an active-state. In the presence of bacteria the addition of Clions only produced some effect after some time due to the barrier effect caused by bacteria adhesion. © (2009) Trans Tech Publications.

In this paper, an application is considered of both active and passive controls, to suppression of chaotic behavior of a simple portal frame, under the excitation of an unbalanced DC motor, with limited power supply (non-ideal problem). The adopted active control strategy consists of two controls: the nonlinear (feedforward) in order to keep the controlled system in a desirable orbit, and the feedback control, which may be obtained by considering state-dependent Riccati equation control to bringing the system into the desired orbit using a magneto rheological (MR) damper. To control the electric current applied in control of the MR damper the Bouc-Wen mathematical model was used to the MR damper. The passive control was obtained by means of a nonlinear sub-structure with properties of nonlinear energy sink. Simulations showed the efficiency of both the passive control (energy pumping) and active control strategies in the suppression of the chaotic behavior. © The Author(s) 2012.

The elevated T-maze is an animal anxiety model which can discriminate between anxiety-like and fear-like behaviors. The estrous cycle is an important variable of the response in animal anxiety tests and is known to affect other models. The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of the estrous cycle on behavior displayed in the elevated T-maze test. Seventeen male and 60 female rats were submitted to one session in this test, with the females being screened for the estrous cycle and divided into groups according to the various phases. The elevated T-maze had three arms of equal dimensions (50 cm x 10 cm), one enclosed by 40-cm high walls and perpendicular to the others, the apparatus being elevated 50cm above the floor. Each rat was placed in the end of the enclosed arm and the latency for it to leave this arm was recorded. These measurements were repeated three times separated by 30-s intervals (passive avoidance). After trial 3, each rat was placed at the distal end of the right open arm and the latency to exit this arm was recorded. Whenever latencies were greater than 300 s the trial was finished. The results demonstrated females in diestrus exhibited anxiety-like behaviors while females in metaestrus behaved in a similar way as the males. There were no differences between groups in fear-like behaviors. The results also indicate the elevated T-maze to be a sensitive test to measure anxiety. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ti-6Al-4V alloy is one of the most frequently used Ti alloys with diverse applications in aerospace and biomedical areas due to its favorable mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. Meanwhile, its surface can stiffer intense corrosion caused by wear processes due to its poor tribological properties. Thus in the present study, PIII processing of Ti-6Al-4V alloy was carried out to evaluate its corrosion resistance in 3.5% NaCl solution. Two different sets of Ti-6Al-4V samples were PIII treated, varying the plasma gases and the treatment time. The corrosion behavior is correlated with the surface morphology, and the nitrogen content. SEM micrographs of the untreated sample reveal a typical two-phase structure. PIII processing promotes surface sputtering and the surface morphology is completely different for samples treated with N-2/H-2 mixture and N-2 only. The highest penetration of nitrogen (similar to 88 nm), corresponding to 33% of N-2 was obtained for the sample treated with N-2/H-2 mixture for 1:30 h. The corrosion behavior of the samples was investigated by a potentiodynamic polarization method. A large passive region of the polarization curves (similar to 1.5 V), associated with the formation of a protective film, was observed for all samples. The passive current density (similar to 3 x 10(-6) A cm(-2)) of the PIII-treated Ti-6Al-4V samples is about 10 times higher than for the untreated sample. This current value is still rather low and maintains good corrosion resistance. The anodic branches of the polarization curves for all treated Ti-6Al-4V samples demonstrate also that the oxide films break down at approximately 1.6 V, forming an active region. Although the sample treated by N-2/H-2 mixture for 1.30 It has thicker nitrogen enriched layer, better corrosion resistance is obtained for the PIII process performed with N, gas only. The electrochemical behavior of metallic chromium in aqueous solutions containing chloride ions at different pH was studied by means of open-circuit potential vs. time measurements, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The composition of the surface oxides was analyzed by XPS. For solutions with pH<3 the formation of a passive layer occurs via a dissolution/precipitation process while for pH>3 the mechanism changes. XPS analysis revealed that Cr2O3 basically constitutes the passive layer.

Nitrogen implantation into Ti alloys at higher temperatures improves their mechanical and corrosion resistance properties by forming a thicker nitride layer. In this paper, two different sets of Ti-6Al-4V samples were plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII)-treated using nitrogen plasma, varying the treatment time from 30 to 150 min (800 degrees C) and the process temperature from 400 degrees C to 800 degrees C (t = 60 min). Nanoindentation measurements of the PIII-treated samples at 800 C during 150 min showed the highest hardness value, 24 GPa, which is about four times bigger than untreated sample hardness. The N penetration at these conditions reached approximately 150 nm as analyzed by Auger spectroscopy. on the other hand, the lowest passive current density (3 x 10(-7) A. cm(-2)) was obtained for a PIII-treated sample during 30 min at higher temperature (800 degrees C). The corrosion resistance of this sample is almost the same as for the untreated specimen. Corrosion behavior evidenced that in strong oxidizing media, all PIII-treated samples are more corrosion resistant than the untreated one. PIII processing at higher temperatures promotes smoothing of the sample surface as observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction analyses of the untreated samples identified the two typical Ti phases, Ti alpha and Ti beta. After the implantation, Ti2N and TiO2 phases were also detected.

Objective: To assess sensory deficits and their effects on proprioceptive and motor function in patients who had undergone unilateral anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction.Design: Four evaluations were conducted: (1) joint position perception of the knee for predetermined angles (0degrees, 15degrees, 30degrees, 45degrees, 60degrees); (2) threshold for detection of passive knee motion at 0degrees, 15degrees, 30degrees, 45degrees, and 60degrees moving into flexion and at 15degrees, 30degrees, 45degrees, and 60degrees moving into extension; (3) latency onset of hamstring muscles; and (4) postural control during upright double- and single-leg stance.Setting: Movement laboratory in Brazil.Participants: Ten participants who had surgical reconstruction of the ACL (reconstructed group) and 10 participants without knee injury (control group).Interventions: Not applicable.Main Outcome Measures: Absolute error, angular displacement, hamstring muscles latency, and mean sway amplitude. Results: Individuals with a reconstructed knee showed decreased joint position perception, a higher threshold for detection of passive knee motion, longer latency of hamstring muscles, and decreased performance in postural control. Conclusions: After lesion and ACL reconstruction, sensory and motor behavior changes were still observed. This may be because of the lack of proprioceptive information resulting from the ACL lesion and/or substitution of ACL by the graft. The influence of potential on electrochemical behavior of Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy under simulate physiological conditions was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The experimental results were compared with those obtained by potentiodynamic polarization curves. All measurements were carried out in Hank's aerated solution at 25degreesC, at pH 7.8 and at different potentials (corrosion potential, 0 mV(SCE), 1000 mV(SCE), and 2000 mV(SCE)). The EIS spectra exhibited a two-step or a two-time constant system, suggesting the formation of a two-layer oxide film on the metal surface. The high corrosion resistance, displayed by this alloy in electrochemical polarization tests, is due to the dense inner layer, while its osseointegration ability can be ascribed to the presence of the outer porous layer. Recasting process influence upon corrosion behavior of Co-Cr-Mo dental alloy in simulated physiological serum has been investigated using chemical and electrochemical techniques. Recast Co-Cr-Mo alloy by induction (IND) or by blowtorch (FLAME) has exhibited similar dendritic structures. Both IND and FLAME alloys have presented good corrosion resistance in physiological serum. Passivation process provides this corrosion resistance. Codissolution makes this process difficult. Passive films, formed on these alloys, have been analyzed as a dual layer consisting of an inner barrier and an outer porous layer. Passive film protective characteristics are higher in FLAME than in IND alloy. On this last alloy, the passive film is more porous due to a higher Codissolution. ©Carl Hanser Verlag, München.

We analyze new results on a magnetically levitated body (a block including a magnet whose bottom pole is set in such a way as to repel the upper pole of a magnetic base) excited by a non-ideal energy source (an unbalanced electric motor of limited power supply). These new results are related to the jump phenomena and increase of power required of such sources near resonance are manifestations of a non-ideal system and they are referred as the Sommerfeld effect, which emulates an energy sink. In this work, we also discuss control strategies to be applied to this system, in resonance conditions, in order to decrease its vibration amplitude and avoiding this apparent energy sink.
