Production of pectinase by solid-state fermentation with Penicillium viridicatum RFC3

Endo-polygalacturonase (endo-PG), exo-polygalacturonase (exo-PG) and pectin liase (PL) were produced by solid-state fermentation of a mixture of orange bagasse and wheat bran (1:1) with the filamentous fungus Penicillium viridicatum RFC3. This substrate was prepared with two moisture contents, 70% and 80%, and each was fermented in two types of container, Erlenmeyer flask and polypropylene pack. When Erlenmeyer flasks were used, the medium containing 80% of initial moisture afforded higher PL production while neither exo- nor endo-PG production was influenced by substrate moisture. The highest enzyme activities obtained were 0.70 U mL(-1) for endo-PG, 8.90 U mL(-1) for exo-PG, and 41.30 U mL(-1) for PL. However, when the fermentation was done in polypropylene packs, higher production of all three enzymes was obtained at 70% moisture (0.7 and 8.33 U mL(-1) for endo- and exo-PG and 100 U mL(-1) for PL). An increase in the pH and decrease in the reducing sugar content of the medium was observed. Characterization, and crystal structure of thiophenyl-2-methylidene-2- aminophenol

The Schiff base thiophenyl-2-methylidene-2-aminophenol (ImineOH) is obtained from a stoichiometric mixture of 2-thiophenecarboxaldehyde and 2-aminophenol in ethanol under reflux at 90 C. Its crystal structure is determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. ImineOH packs in an orthorhombic unit cell in the Pbca space group with the unit cell parameters a = 16.942(4) Å, b = 13.4395(11) Å, and c = 17.5857(12) Å, V = 4004.1(10) Å3, Z = 16. Strong hydrogen bonds are present in the ImineOH structure. Apart from the X-ray study, ImineOH was characterized by elemental analysis (CHN-S) and FT-IR (4000 cm-1 to 400 cm-1), UV-Vis and 13C, 1H, and 15N NMR spectroscopic measurements. © 2013 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Atrophic gastritis: Risk factor for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in a Latin-American population

AIM: To study the association between atrophic gastritis (AG) and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) in a Latin-America population. METHODS: A case-control study was performed at two reference Brazilian hospitals including patients diagnosed with advanced ESCC and dyspeptic patients who had been subjected to upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, with biopsies of the gastric antrum and body. All cases with ESCC were reviewed by a single pathologist, who applied standard criteria for the diagnosis of mucosal atrophy, intestinal metaplasia, and dysplasia, all classified as AG. The data on the patients' age, sex, smoking status, and alcohol consumption were collected from clinical records, and any missing information was completed by telephone interview. The association between AG and ESCC was assessed by means of univariate and multiple conditional logistic regressions. RESULTS: Most patients were male, and the median age was 59 years (range: 37-79 years) in both the ESCC and control groups. Univariate analysis showed that an intake of ethanol greater than 32 g/d was an independent risk factor that increased the odds of ESCC 7.57 times (P = 0.014); upon multiple analysis, alcohol intake of ethanol greater than 32 g/d exhibited a risk of 4.54 (P = 0.081), as adjusted for AG and smoking. Smoking was shown to be an independent risk factor that increased the odds of ESCC 14.55 times (P = 0.011) for individuals who smoked 0 to 51 packs/year and 21.40 times (P = 0.006) for those who smoked more than 51 packs/year. Upon multiple analyses, those who smoked up to 51 packs/year exhibited a risk of 7.85 (P = 0.058), and those who smoked more than 51 packs/year had a risk 11.57 times higher (P = 0.04), as adjusted for AG and alcohol consumption. AG proved to be a risk factor that increased the odds of ESCC 5.33 times (95%CI: 1.55-18.30, P = 0.008) according to the results of univariate conditional logistic regression. CONCLUSION: There was an association by univariate conditional logistic regression between AG and ECSS in this sample of Latin-American population. © 2013 Baishideng.

Os dramas na prosa onírica de Artemidoro

The objective of this paper is to present a Portuguese translation, with notes and commentary, and the corresponding Greek text of a small excerpt of book I (Onir. I. 56.25 -45), of Artemidorus’ Interpretation of dreams, Oneirokritika, based on Pack’s edition (1963), and on Houlihan’s (1997a,b) reviews and of Bowersock (1994)’s. It is a particular and important passage, focused on dreams about tragedy, comedy, choruses and hymns. To this translation, which serves as the basis for the present study of the onirocritic text, other excerpts were added in order to examine the (re)configuration of the dramatic action or hypokrisis into dream interpretations, within the author’s model of analysis, and its relationship with truth and falseness on physis, ethos and tekhne levels; all on a common denominator, memory. A rhetoric basis for author’s onirocritic vision and the keys to onirocritics in the dramatic scenes are discussed.
