The pyH[trans-RuCl4(py)2](1) and pyH[trans-RuCl4(CO)(py)](2) complexes were synthesized and found to crystallize in space group P21/n, Z = 4 with a = 8.080(7), b = 22.503(7), c = 10.125(6) Å, β = 93.19(6)° for (1) and a = 7.821(1), b = 10.337(3), c = 19.763(3) Å, β = 93.07(1)° for (2). The structures were solved by Patterson and difference Fourier techniques and refined to R = 0.062 for (1) and R = 0.038 for (2). In both cases the Ru(III) ion is octahedrally coordinated to four co-planar chlorine atoms, the nitrogen of the pyridine rings or carbon from the carbon monoxide. Another protonated pyridine group, which forms the counter-cation completes the crystal structures. The UV-Vis absorption spectra show three bands: (1) 360 (ε = 1180 M-1 cm-1), 441 (ε = 3200 M-1 cm-1) and 532 nm (ε = 400 M-1 cm-1); (2) 315(ε = 1150 M-1 cm-1), 442 (ε = 3170 M-1 cm-1) and 530 nm (ε = 390 M-1 cm-1). The two higher energy bands were associated with ligand-to-metal charge transfer transitions and a third band at lower energy was assigned to a d-d transition. Low temperature EPR data confirmed the presence of the paramagnetically active Ru(III) and it is consistent with axial symmetry of the complexes. The position of the stretching CO band in complex (2) is discussed in terms of metal-CO backbonding.

The polarization effects of in-plane electric fields and eccentricity on electronic and optical properties of semiconductor quantum rings (QRs) are discussed within the effective-mass approximation. As eccentric rings may appropriately describe real (grown or fabricated) QRs, their energy spectrum is studied. The interplay between applied electric fields and eccentricity is analysed, and their polarization effects are found to compensate for appropriate values of eccentricity and field intensity. The importance of applied fields in tailoring the properties of different nanoscale materials and structures is stressed.

Particles in Saturn's main rings range in size from dust to kilometer-sized objects. Their size distribution is thought to be a result of competing accretion and fragmentation processes. While growth is naturally limited in tidal environments, frequent collisions among these objects may contribute to both accretion and fragmentation. As ring particles are primarily made of water ice attractive surface forces like adhesion could significantly influence these processes, finally determining the resulting size distribution. Here, we derive analytic expressions for the specific self-energy Q and related specific break-up energy Q(star) of aggregates. These expressions can be used for any aggregate type composed of monomeric constituents. We compare these expressions to numerical experiments where we create aggregates of various types including: regular packings like the face-centered cubic (fcc), Ballistic Particle Cluster Aggregates (BPCA), and modified BPCAs including e.g. different constituent size distributions. We show that accounting for attractive surface forces such as adhesion a simple approach is able to: (a) generally account for the size dependence of the specific break-up energy for fragmentation to occur reported in the literature, namely the division into "strength" and "gravity" regimes and (b) estimate the maximum aggregate size in a collisional ensemble to be on the order of a few tens of meters, consistent with the maximum particle size observed in Saturn's rings of about 10 m. This work describes the synthesis of octa (hydridodimethylsiloxyl) octasilsesquioxane, (Q(8)M(8)(H)) and its thermolysis in pyridine media. The new compound called CPy was characterized by FTIR, NMR-MAS, XRD, MEV spectroscopies and TGA analyses. These results indicate that silsesquioxanes cages (octanion) are maintained after thermal treatment. A cleavage of vertex siloxy groups yielding a nanocomposite with polymeric nature is proposed. Its structure and morphology allows the adsorption/inclusion of electrochemical mediator, toluidine blue O. The square wave voltammetry analysis of resulting composite (CPyTBO) exhibits two redox couple with a formal potential (E-0') 0.1 V and 0.26 V to I and II redox couples respectively, (Britton-Robinson (BR) buffer pH 3, v = 10 Hz versus SCE) ascribed to a monomer and dimmer of the toluidine blue species. This paper opens the use of spherosiloxane derived materials a's host for small molecules in the electrochemical field. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A strong association between the benefits of physical exercise on the cardiovascular disease with an improvement of the endothelium-derived relaxing factor production has been consistently shown. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of exercise training associated with high caloric diet in the reactivity of rat mesenteric and aortic rings. Experimental protocol consisted of 4 weeks of high caloric diet consumption previous to 4 weeks of run training (1.2 km/h, 0% grade, in sessions of 60 min, 5 days/week). Concentrations of triglycerides, glucose, insulin and nitrite/nitrate levels were measured and atherogenic index was calculated. Concentration-response curves to acetylcholine (10 nM-100 mu M), sodium nitroprusside (100 pM-100 nM) and phenylephrine (1 nM-3 mu M) were obtained. Exercise training reduced body mass (6%) and triglyceride levels (about 54%), without changes in glucose and insulin concentrations. An improvement of endothelium-dependent relaxation responses to acetylcholine in mesenteric and aortic rings was observed in trained group. No changes were seen for sodium nitroprusside and phenylephrine. In conclusion, our study is the first to show clearly that run training promotes an improvement of the endothelium-dependent relaxing response in aorta and mesenteric rings from rats fed with high caloric diet and that is associated with increase of NO production. Alternant codes over arbitrary finite commutative local rings with identity are constructed in terms of parity-check matrices. The derivation is based on the factorization of x s - 1 over the unit group of an appropriate extension of the finite ring. An efficient decoding procedure which makes use of the modified Berlekamp-Massey algorithm to correct errors and erasures is presented. Furthermore, we address the construction of BCH codes over Zm under Lee metric.

Stationary states of an electron in thin GaAs elliptical quantum rings are calculated within the effective-mass approximation. The width of the ring varies smoothly along the centerline, which is an ellipse. The solutions of the Schrödinger equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions are approximated by a product of longitudinal and transversal wave functions. The ground-state probability density shows peaks: (i) where the curvature is larger in a constant-with ring, and (ii) in thicker parts of a circular ring. For rings of typical dimensions, it is shown that the effects of a varying width may be stronger than those of the varying curvature. Also, a width profile which compensates the main localization effects of the varying curvature is obtained.

Electrolysis has been examined as a method of synthesis for [(L)(dppb)Ru(mu-Cl)(3)RuCl(dppb)] complexes, where dppb = 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)butane and L = pyridine (py), 4-methylpyridine (4-pic) or dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), by using [RuCl3(dppb)(L)] as precursors. The products of the electrolysis were characterized by P-31-{H-1} NMR, cyclic voltammetry and near infrared spectroscopy. The presence of the [Ru2Cl5(dppb)(2)] complex in the electrochemical cell suggests a mechanism by which the starting original species from the bulk solution reacts with the reduced form [RuCl2(dppb)(L)] generated at the surface of the electrode. The crystal structure of the precursor mer-[RuCl3(dppb)(4-pic)] was determined by X-ray diffraction.

Alkylsulphinylpyridine ligands containing three potential donor centres: N, S and O atoms and two complexes of general formula trans-[PtCl2(PEt3)PySOR)] (R = Me and Pr-n) were prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, i.r. spectroscopy, H-1- and P-31-n.m.r. and X-ray crystallography. The ambidentate ligands act in both situations as monodentate ligands, bonded to the metal exclusively through the nitrogen atom. The crystal structures revealed the occurrence of discrete molecules and, in both complexes, the Pt atoms are coordinated in square planar arrangements by two chloride ions, in a trans configuration, by the pyridine nitrogen atom, and by the phosphine P atom. The oxygen atoms do not take part in the complexation scheme.
