The influence of the substrate temperature on the structural features and opto-electrical properties of undoped and indium-doped ZnO thin films deposited by pyrosol process was investigated. The addition of indium induces a drastic decrease (by a factor approximate to 10(10) for samples deposited at 300 degreesC) in the electrical resistivity of films, the lowest electrical resistivity (6 mOmega-cm) being observed for the film deposited at 450 degreesC. Films are highly transparent (>80%) in the Vis-NIR ranges, and the optical band gap exhibits a blue shift (from 3.29 to 3.33 eV) for the In-doped films deposited at increasing temperature. Preferential orientation of the ZnO crystallites with the c-axis perpendicular to the substrate surface and an anisotropic morphology of the nanoporous structure was observed for films growth at 300 and 350 degreesC. This paper deals with the study of optical, structural and biocompatible properties of PEO-like plasma polymerized films resulting from RF excited diethylene glycol dimethyl ether (CH3O(CH2CH2O)(2)CH3 diglyme) glow discharges. The study was carried out using visible-ultraviolet and FTIR spectroscopies and contact angle measurements. FTIR spectra of plasma polymerized diglyme showed a stronger presence of ethylene glycol groups in film structure for lower RF power levels. The contact angle measurements for water revealed an increasing from 30degrees to 62,5degrees when the RF power was varied from 2 to 45 W, indicating the decreasing of the hydrophilic character of diglyme films with the increasing of RF power. This trend is in agreement with FTIR results. The data from visible-ultraviolet reflectance and transmittance spectra revealed alterations on optical properties of plasma polymerized diglyme films. The film's optical gap varied from 3.8 to 3 eV for RF power running from 5 to 45 W.

Plasmas generated in de discharges in aromatic compounds have been used for several years in polymerization processes. The chemical kinetics developed in such a plasma environment are extremely complicated. Therefore it is extremely important to set up optical and electrical diagnostics in order to establish the kinetics of the film growth, In this work we studied de plasmas generated ill low-pressure atmospheres of benzene for different values of gas pressure and power coupled to the discharge. The pressure range varied from 0.2 to 1.0 mbar for electric power running from 4 to 25 W, the main chemical species observed within the discharge were CH, H and C. It was observed that the CH relative concentration increases continuously with the power in the range investigated. The electron temperature varied from 0.5 to 2.0 eV with the increase of the power, for a fixed value of gas pressure. The relative dielectric constant of the plasma polymerized benzene was kept around 4.8 from 100 Hz to 10 kHz, presenting a resonance near 25 kHz. This electric behaviour of the film was the same fur different conditions of polymeric film deposition, (C) 1997 Elsevier B.V. S.A.

Modern industry has frequently employed ethylene glycol ethers as monomers in plasma polymerization process to produce different types of coatings. In this work we used a stainless steel plasma reactor to grow thin polymeric films from low pressure RF excited plasma of diethylene glycol dimethyl ether. Plasmas were generated at 5W RF power in the range of 16 Pa to 60 Pa. The molecular structure of plasma polymerized films and their optical properties were analyzed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and UltravioletVisible Spectroscopy, respectively. The IR spectra show C-H stretching at 3000-2900 cm(-1), C=O stretching at 1730-1650 cm(-1), C-H bending at 1440-1380 cm(-1), C-O and C-O-C stretching at 1200-1000 cm(-1). The refraction index was around 1.5 and the optical gap calculated from absorption coefficient presented value near 3.8 eV. Water contact angle of the films ranged from 40 degrees to 35 degrees with corresponding surface energy from 66 to 73x10(-7) J. Because of its favorable optical and hydrophilic characteristics these films can be used in ophthalmic industries as glass lenses coatings.

Recovered substrates have been extensively used in the aerospace field. Cadmium electroplating has been widely applied to promote protective coatings in aeronautical components, resulting in excellent corrosion protection combined with a good performance in cyclic loading. Ecological considerations allied to the increasing demands for corrosion resistance have resulted in the search for possible alternatives. Zinc-nickel (Zn-Ni) alloys have received considerable interest recently, because these coatings show advantages such as a good resistance to white and red rust, high plating rates, and acceptance in the market. In this study, the effect of electroplated Zn-Ni coatings on AISI 4340 high-strength steel was analyzed for rotating bending fatigue strength, corrosion, and adhesion resistance. The compressive residual stress field was measured by x-ray diffraction prior to fatigue tests. Optical microscopy documented coating thickness, adhesion characteristics, and coverage extent for nearly all substrates. Fractured fatigue specimens were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Three different Zn-Ni coating thicknesses were tested, and comparisons with the rotating bending fatigue data from electroplated Cd specimens were performed. Experimental results differentiated the effects of the various coatings on the AISI 4340 steel behaviour when submitted to fatigue testing and the influence of coating thickness on the fatigue strength.

Comparative wear and corrosion properties of Cr3C2-NiCr (CC-TS) (a high-velocity oxyfuel [HVOF]) and hard chromium (HC) coating's obtained on a steel substrate have been studied. The structural characterization was done before and after measurements by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and scanning white light interferometry. Wear and corrosion properties were evaluated by ball on disk (ASTM G99-90), rubber wheel (ASTM G65-91), and electrochemical measurements of open circuit and polarization curves. The best corrosion and wear resistance was for the CC-TS obtained by HVOF. The open-circuit potential values measured for both samples after 18 h of immersion we're: -0.240 and -0.550 V, respectively, for CC-TS and HC, versus Ag/AgCl,KClsat. Three orders of magnitude lower volume loss were found for CC-TS (HVOF) after friction tests compared with HC.

Stainless steel coatings obtained by High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) were characterized using optical (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron probe micro-analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), open-circuit potential (E-OC) measurements, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and polarisation tests. Differences among coated steels were mainly related with the gun-substrate distance parameter (310 nm for samples A and B and 260 min for C and D). The open-circuit potential values measured for all the samples after 18 h of immersion in aerated and unstirred 3.4% NaCl solution were: - 0.334, - 0.360, - 0.379 and - 0.412 V vs. Ag/AgCl,KClsat. for samples A to D, respectively. For EIS measurements, Nyquist plots showed higher capacitive semi-circle for samples sprayed at longer distance, indicating higher corrosion resistance in NaCl solution. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Thermally sprayed HVOF coatings are increasingly being used in industrial applications where high wear and corrosion resistance are needed [1,2]. In this paper, electrochemical ac and de experiments were used in order to obtain the corrosion resistance of coated steel with different numbers of Cr3C2-NiCr layers. This work has been performed in order to determine the role of coating thickness in the corrosion behaviour of a steel protected with cermet thermally sprayed coatings. It is known that a thicker layer protects better against corrosion when a metallic coating is evaluated. But cermet coatings, such as Cr3C2-NiCr, contain higher levels of porosity and residual stresses than metallic coatings, which really could influence the corrosion resistance of the deposited layer. Electrochemical measurements, such as Open-Circuit Potential (E-Osubset of), Polarisation Resistance (RP) and Cyclic Voltammetry (CV), were performed in an aerated 3.4 NaCI media (%wt.). Electrochemical Impedance Measurements (EIS) were also done in order to obtain a mechanism that explains the corrosion process. Structural Characterisation was carried out by means of Optical and Scanning Electron Microscopes (OM, SEM) with an Energy Dispersive Spectrometry analyser (EDS). Results show that the corrosion resistance of the complete system is mainly influenced by the substrate behaviour. The application of a higher number of deposited layers did not substantially increase their anticorrosive properties. Stress generation during the spraying deposition process plays an important role in the behaviour of the coated steel against corrosion phenomena. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V All rights reserved.

In the present work the corrosion resistance of micro-cracked hard chromium and Cr3C2-NiCr (HVOF) coatings applied on a steel substrate have been compared using open-circuit potential (E-OC) measurements, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and polarization curves. The coatings surfaces and cross-section were characterized before and after corrosion tests using optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). After 18 h of immersion, the open-circuit potential values were around -0.50 and -0.25V/(Ag vertical bar AgCl vertical bar KClsat) for hard chromium and Cr3C2- NiCr, respectively. The surface analysis done after 12 h of immersion showed iron on the hard chromium surface inside/near surface cracks, while iron was not detected on the Cr3C2-NiCr surface even after 18 h. For longer immersion time hard chromium was more degraded than thermal sprayed coating. For hard chromium coating a total resistance values between 50 and 80 k Omega cm(2) were measured and two well-defined time constants were observed, without significant change with the immersion time. For Cr3C2-NiCr coating the total impedance diminished from around 750 to 25 k Omega cm(2) as the immersion time increased from 17 up to 132 h and two overlapped time constants were also observed. Polarization curves recorded after 18 h of immersion showed a lower current and higher corrosion potential for Cr3C2-NiCr coating than other samples studied. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Thermal spray WC-based coatings are widely used in the aircraft industry mainly for their resistance to wear, reworking and rebuilding operations and repair of worn components on landing gear, hydraulic cylinders, actuators, propeller hub assemblies, gas turbine engines, and so on. The aircraft industry is also trying to use thermal spray technology to replace electroplating coatings such as hard chromium. In the present work, WC-Co coatings were built up on an AA 7050 aluminum alloy using high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) technology and a liquid nitrogen cooling prototype system. The influence of the spray parameters (standard conditions, W19S, increasing the oxygen flux, W19H, and also increasing the carrier gas flux, W19F) on corrosion, friction, and abrasive wear resistance were also studied. The coatings were characterized using optical (OM) and scanning electron (SEM) microscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The friction and abrasive wear resistance of the coatings were studied using Rubber Wheel and Ball on Disk tests. The electrochemical studies were conducted using open-circuit potential (E(oc)) measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Differences among coated samples were mainly related to the variation of the thermal spray parameters used during the spray process. No significant differences were observed in the wear resistance for the coatings studied, and all of them showed a wear rate around 10 times lower than that of the aluminum alloy. The results of mass loss and wear rate were interpreted considering different mechanisms. Comparing the different spray parameters, the oxygen flux (higher flame temperature) produced the sample which showed the highest corrosion resistance in aerated and unstirred 3.5% NaCl solution. Aluminum ions were detected on the surface almost immediately after the immersion of samples W19S and W19F in chloride solution, showing that the electrolyte reached the substrate and galvanic corrosion probably occurred. For sample W19H, aluminum ions were not detected even after 120 min of immersion in NaCl solution. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Electro-optical properties of sol-gel derived 2 mol% antimony or niobium doped tin dioxide films have been measured. The electron density has been calculated considering all the relevant scattering mechanisms and experimental conductivity data measured in the range -197 to 25 degrees C. The results support the hypothesis that both ionised impurity scattering and grain boundary scattering have comparable effects in the resistivity of coatings, for free electron density congruent to 5 x 10(18) cm(-3). We have measured variation of photoconductivity excitation with wavelength using xenon and deuterium lamp as light sources. Results show that the main band in the photoconductivity spectrum is dependent on the spectral light source emission, the excitation peak reaching 5 eV (deuterium lamp). This band is due to the recombination process involving oxygen species and photogenerated electron-hole pairs. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

SnO2:Sb multi-layer coatings were prepared by the Pechini method. An investigation was made of the influence of the concentration of Sb2O3 and the viscosity of the precursor solution on the electrical and optical properties of SnO2 thin films. The use of a multi-layer system as an alternative form of increasing the packing and. thus. decreasing porosity proved to be efficient, decreasing the system's resistivity without altering its optical properties.
