Petroleum well drilling monitoring has become an important tool for detecting and preventing problems during the well drilling process. In this paper, we propose to assist the drilling process by analyzing the cutting images at the vibrating shake shaker, in which different concentrations of cuttings can indicate possible problems, such as the collapse of the well borehole walls. In such a way, we present here an innovative computer vision system composed by a real time cutting volume estimator addressed by support vector regression. As far we know, we are the first to propose the petroleum well drilling monitoring by cutting image analysis. We also applied a collection of supervised classifiers for cutting volume classification. The results observed in this work support the view that coronary perfusion pressure affects ventricular performance independently of metabolic effects; a mechanism operating in beat-to-beat regulation is proposed.

The participation of the trapezius (pars media) and rhomboideus major muscles were studied electromyographically in movements of lateral and medial rotation (free and against resistance) of the arm. In the majority of cases both muscles were inactive during the performance of the analysed movements. Cases in which only one or both muscles acted in free rotation occurred only at the second half or ending of the movement. Records of electrical potentials during against resistance rotation were due to tensional efforts at the shoulder level.

Carrageenin-induced inflammatory responses in the hindpaws of rats were quantitated by measuring: (1) alterations in volumes of the paws; and (2) alterations in concentration of dye, previously injected intravenously, which was recovered in perfusates from the paws. The inflammatory response in one paw was attenuated by previously inducing an inflammatory response in the contralateral paw. The effect was abolished by pretreatment with insulin. Indexes of adrenal activity were increased after the induction of the inflammatory response and they were not attenuated by pretreatment with insulin. Adrenal hyperactivity was characterized by increased serum corticosterone concentration, decreased adrenal ascorbic acid content, and reduced number of circulating eosinophils. It is concluded that inflammatory stimuli which lead to alterations in microvessels depend on a facilitatory effect of insulin. This effect is antagonized by glucocorticoids released in enhanced concentrations after the application of noxious stimuli. Therefore, endogenous insulin and glucocorticoids act as modulators of inflammatory responses.

Complex genetic models and segregation analysis were applied to family data obtained in a hyperendemic goiter area in Brazil. The single locus and Falconer's models did not fit the data. Edward's model showed convergency, but statistical concordance has not been obtained. Although the genetic load model explains statistically the family data, it would be hard to imagine that endemic goiter could be explained by a model where synergism among genetic and environmental factors is not assumed.

An indirect fluorescent test was developed for detecting antibodies to Paracoccidioides brasiliensis using bentonite particles as antigen (Bent-IF). The bentonite particles were coated with P. brasiliensis polysaccharide antigen and tested with sera from paracoccidioidomycosis patients (36 sera), normal blood donors (32 sera) and patients with non-mycotic diseases (29 sera). The titres given by the positive sera were compared with those of complement fixation (CF), immunodiffusion (ID) and immunofluorescent test using yeast forms of the fungus as antigen (conventional-IF). All normal blood donors' sera gave a negative Bent-IF, conventional-IF, ID and CF tests. All paracoccidioidomycosis sera were reactive in conventional-IF and gave concordant results in Bent-IF. There was no correlation between CF and Bent-IF titres. 27·6% of sera from patients with non-mycotic diseases gave weak titres in both IF-tests. The present data indicate that the Bent-IF is a sensitive and simple serodiagnostic technique comparable with the conventional P. brasiliensis antibody test. © 1983.

The lysogenic capacity of human macrophages facing M. leprae in vitro may be dependent on an important genetic component. Although the familial aggregation of the trait is demonstrated, this is a necessary but not sufficient condition to prove genetic influence. The data do not fit some simple genetic models (autosomal dominant or incompletely dominant gene; dominant or recessive sex-linked gene). The results obtained are consistent with the hypothesis that the macrophages' lysogenic capacity is mainly due to a major gene with variable expressivity. This hypothesis may be too simple to account for the whole variability detected and therefore must be considered a working hypothesis.
