Thin films were prepared using glass precursors obtained in the ternary system NaPO(3)-BaF(2)-WO(3) and the binary system NaPO(3)-WO(3) with high concentrations of WO(3) (above 40% molar). Vitreous samples have been used as a target to prepare thin films. Such films were deposited using the electron beam evaporation method onto soda-lime glass substrates. Several structural characterizations were performed by Raman spectroscopy and X-ray Absorption Near Edge Spectroscopy (XANES) at the tungsten L(I) and L(III) absorption edges. XANES investigations showed that tungsten atoms are only sixfold coordinated (octahedral WO(6)) and that these films are free of tungstate tetrahedral units (WO(4)). In addition, Raman spectroscopy allowed identifying a break in the linear phosphate chains as the amount of WO(3) increases and the formation of P-O-W bonds in the films network indicating the intermediary behavior of WO(6) octahedra in the film network. Based on XANES data, we suggested a new attribution of several Raman absorption bands which allowed identifying the presence of W-O and W=O terminal bonds and a progressive apparition of W-O-W bridging bonds for the most WO(3) concentrated samples (above 40% molar) attributed to the formation of WO(6) clusters. Pb1-XLaXTiO3 thin films, (X = 0.0; 13 and 0.27 mol%) were prepared by the polymeric precursor method. Thin films were deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si (1 1 1), Si (1 0 0) and glass substrates by spin coating, and annealed in the 200-300degreesC range in an O-2 atmosphere. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy were used for the microstructural characterization of the thin films. Photoluminescence (PL) at room temperature has been observed in thin films of (PbLa)TiO3. The films deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates present PL intensity greater than those deposited on glass and silicon substrates. The intensity of PL in these thin films was found to be dependent on the thermal treatment and lanthanum molar concentration. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Vitreous samples containing high concentrations of WO3 (above 40% M) have been used as a target to prepare thin films. Such films were deposited using the electron beam evaporation method onto soda-lime glass substrates. These films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), perfilometry, X-ray energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS), M-Lines and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. In this work, experimental parameters were established to obtain stable thin films showing a chemical composition close to the glass precursor composition and with a high concentration of WO3. These amorphous thin films of about 4 mu m in thickness exhibit a deep blue coloration but they can be bleached by thermal treatment near the glass transition temperature. Such bleached films show several guided modes in the visible region and have a high refractive index. Controlled crystallization was realized and thus it was possible to obtain WO3 microcrystals in the amorphous phase. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This work reports changes in structural properties produced by thermal annealing of flash evaporated amorphous GaAs films using the micro-Raman scattering and the X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. Films of about 1 μm were grown on c-Si and glass substrates. The crystallization process is less effective for samples deposited on c-Si. This could be due to the ordering in the first layers of the film imposed by the oriented Si substrates. We propose that this ordering makes the growth of crystallites in these films more restrained than the growth occurring in the completely amorphous films on glass substrates. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. We study the surface morphology evolution of ZnO thin films grown on glass substrates as a function of thickness by RF magnetron sputtering technique. The surface topography of the samples is measured by atomic force microscopy (AFM). All AFM images of the films are analyzed using scaling concepts. The results show that the surface morphology is initially formed by a small grains structure. The grains increase in size and height with growth time resulting in the formation of a mounds-like structure. The growth exponent, beta, and the exponent defining the evolution of the characteristic wavelength of the surface, p, amounted to beta = 0.76 +/- 0.08 and p = 0.3 +/- 0.05. From these exponents, the surface morphology is determined by the nonlocal shadowing effects, that is the dominant mechanism, due to the incident deposition particles during film growth.

Polyaniline (PAni) thin films were deposited onto BK7 glass substrates using the in situ deposition technique. The control of the time and the aniline concentration in the PAni polymerization reaction on the film deposition allowed us to prepare films with different thickness, down to similar to 25 nm. The film growth process was monitored by measuring the UV-vis spectra and the AFM height profiles of the film surface. The curves of adsorption kinetics were analyzed with the Avrami's model, yielding an exponent it n = 3, thus indicating nucleation of spheroids at the initial stages of polymerization that grow through a diffusion process. AFM images of the surface height profiles corroborate this hypothesis, with spheroids growing with no preferred orientation during the in situ deposition. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Undoped and indium-doped Zinc oxide (ZnO) solid films were deposited by the pyrosol process at 450 degrees C on glass substrates From solutions where In/Zn ratio was 2, 5, and 10 at.%. Electrical measurements performed at room temperature show that the addition of indium changes the resistance of the films. The resistivities of doped films are less than non-doped ZnO films by one to two orders of magnitude depending on the dopant concentration in the solution. Preferential orientation of the films with the c-axis perpendicular to the substrate was detected by X-ray diffraction and polarized extended X-ray absorption fine structures measurements at the Zn K edge. This orientation depends on the indium concentration in the starting solution. The most textured films were obtained for solutions where In/Zn ratio was 2 and 5 at.%. When In/Zn = 10 at.%, the films had a nearly random orientation of crystallites. Evidence of the incorporation of indium in the ZnO lattice was obtained from extended X-ray absorption fine structures at the In and Zn K edges. The structural analysis of the least resistive film (Zn/In = 5 at.%) shows that In substitutes Zn in the wurtzite structure. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Both narrow and broad photoluminescence bands were observed in Ga1-XAsX films prepared by flash evaporation of polycrystalline GaAs containing native C impurities. The observed narrow crystalline-like bands are similar to band-to-band and C acceptor impurity emissions in crystalline GaAs. The narrow bands are evidence that the As excess favors the PL active GaAs crystallite formation in films deposited onto silicon (10 0) substrate, even when the As excess is very large (X = 0.84). This favoring is not observed in twin samples grown on silica glass substrates nor on Ga rich samples, indicating the important role of the combined effect of the As excess and Si substrate in the GaAs crystallite formation. The broad amorphous-like bands were observed in Ga rich and in moderately As rich samples. The photoluminescence emission is compared with the microstructure of the material as determined from the micro-Raman, absorption edge and reflectance measurements. The volume fraction of the crystallites formed is small and PL emission indicates that the crystallite electronic quality is much better than the ones formed heat treating films grown on silica glass substrates. Thioglycolic acid-capped Use quantum dots (QDs) were assembled on glass substrates with two distinct polyelectrolytes, viz poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM), generation 4 dendrimer, via the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique. Films containing up to 30 polyelectrolyte/QD bilayers were prepared. The growth of the multilayers was monitored with UV-vis spectroscopy, which showed an almost linear increase in the absorbance of the 2.8 nm QDs at 535 nm with the number of deposited bilayers. AFM measurements estimated a film thickness of 3 nm per bilayer for the PAH/Cdse films. The adsorption process and the optical properties of the PAMAM/CdSe LbL films were further analyzed layer-by-layer using surface plasmon resonance (SPR), from which a thickness of 3.2 nm was found for a PAMAM/CdSe bilayer. Photoluminescence measurements revealed higher photooxidation of the quantum dots in PAH/CdSe than in PAMAM/CdSe films. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The alternating conductivity, sigma*(f) = sigma'(f) + i sigma ''(f), of in situ polymerized polyaniline thin films doped with hydrochloric acid, deposited on top of an interdigitated gold line array previously deposited on glass substrates, were measured in the frequency (f) range between 0.1 Hz to 10 MHz and in the temperature range from 100 to 430 K. The results for sigma'(f) are typical of a disordered solid material: for frequencies lower than a certain hopping frequency gamma(hop), log[sigma'(f)] is frequency-independent rising almost linearly for in logf > gamma(hop). A master curve was thus obtained by plotting the real component of the conductivity using normalized scales sigma'(f)/sigma(dc) and f/gamma(hop) which is indicative of a single process operating in the whole frequency range. An expression encompassing the conduction through a disordered structure taken from previous random free energy barrier model for hopping carriers, as well a dielectric function to represent the capacitive behavior of the PAni was employed to fit the experimental results. The dielectric constant and activation energy for hopping carriers were obtained as function of the polymer doping level. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
