Citrus black spot (CBS) is a fungal disease, caused by Guignardia citricarpa, that has a high economic impact on citrus. Although G. citricarpa has been associated with black spot of citrus, an adequate pathogenicity test is still not available. Thus, our objective was to develop and evaluate a simple, safe, and practical pathogenicity test. We used fruits from Pera-Rio and Valencia sweet orange trees from two different orchards, located in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. Inoculation was performed by placing six disks colonized by G. citricarpa, onto the peel of healthy fruits, previously bagged. In the Pera-Rio sweet orange grove, initial symptoms of the false melanose type resulting from the inoculations were observed 55 days after inoculation (dai). In the Valencia grove, initial symptoms also of the false melanose type resulting from the inoculations occurred 73 dai. A total of 92.8% and 86.6% of the Pera Rio and Valencia fruits inoculated, respectively, showed symptoms of CBS. Citrus black spot symptoms were not observed in any of the control fruits.

The ionospheric effect is one of the major errors in GPS data processing over long baselines. As a dispersive medium, it is possible to compute its influence on the GPS signal with the ionosphere-free linear combination of L1 and L2 observables, requiring dual-frequency receivers. In the case of single-frequency receivers, ionospheric effects are either neglected or reduced by using a model. In this paper, an alternative for single-frequency users is proposed. It involves multiresolution analysis (MRA) using a wavelet analysis of the double-difference observations to remove the short- and medium-scale ionosphere variations and disturbances, as well as some minor tropospheric effects. Experiments were carried out over three baseline lengths from 50 to 450 km, and the results provided by the proposed method were better than those from dual-frequency receivers. The horizontal root mean square was of about 0.28 m (1 sigma).

A gas chromatographic method to determine caprolactam in multilayer PA-6 films used for meat foodstuffs and cheese was developed and validated. A wide linear range (0.8-400 mu g/ml), RSD <= 4.1% and recovery higher than 90.0% were obtained for the chromatographic system, while precision and accuracy of the method showed RSD <= 3.8%, recovery from 95.5-100.0% and LOQ of 32 mu g/g. Irradiated (3, 7 and 12 kGy) and non-irradiated commercial films were analyzed. Most of them increased caprolactam levels with the increase of irradiation doses. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. The styrene levels of polystyrene (PS) glasses from the most consumed brands of disposable glasses intended for water and coffee in Brazil were determined. A GC-FID method was developed and validated, showing good precision and accuracy. The method was successfully used to determine styrene in 11 PS glass brands. The styrene levels ranged from 1.68 to 43.69 mg/100 g glass, depending on the kind of polymer, thickness, and glass brand. It could be used to control the content of styrene in the polymer. The migration of styrene from the glasses into water and 20 % ethanol was not detected.

Cyclic oligomers were identified in PET bottles used for mineral water and fruit juice using MS and H-1 and C-13 NMR: a first series cyclic trimer, a first series cyclic tetramer, a first series cyclic dimmer and a second series cyclic trimer. An analytical method to determine first series cyclic trimer in these bottles was developed and validated, using HPLC. The first series cyclic trimer levels were 316-462 mg/100 g of PET bottle. A new UV spectrophotometric method was developed for quantitative evaluation of ceftazidime preparations. The UV detector was set at 255 nm. Beer's law is obeyed in the concentration range of 7.0-14.0 mu g/mL. The method was found to be selective, linear, accurate, and precise in the specified ranges. Intra- and interday variability for the method were <2% relative standard deviation. Common excipients used as additives in pharmaceutical preparations do not interfere with the proposed method. This method was successfully used for quantification of ceftazidime in pure form and in pharmaceutical preparations.

A rapid, accurate, and sensitive high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method was developed and validated for the determination of ceftazidime in pharmaceuticals. The method validation parameters yielded good results and included range, linearity, precision, accuracy, specificity, and recovery. The excipients in the commercial powder for injection did not interfere with the assay. Reversed-phase chromatography was used for the HPLC separation on a Waters C18 (WAT 054275; Milford, MA) column with methanol-water (70 + 30, v/v) as the mobile phase pumped isocratically at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min. The effluent was monitored at 245 nm. The calibration graph for ceftazidime was linear from 50.0 to 300.0 mu g/mL. The values for interday and intraday precision (relative standard deviation) were < 1 %. The results obtained by the HPLC method were calculated statistically by analysis of variance. We concluded that the HPLC method is satisfactory for the determination of ceftazidime in the raw material and pharmaceuticals.

The paper presents a methodology to model three-dimensional reinforced concrete members by means of embedded discontinuity elements based on the Continuum Strong Discontinuous Approach (CSDA). Mixture theory concepts are used to model reinforced concrete as a 31) composite material constituted of concrete with long fibers (rebars) bundles oriented in different directions embedded in it. The effects of the rebars are modeled by phenomenological constitutive models devised to reproduce the axial non-linear behavior, as well as the bond-slip and dowel action. The paper presents the constitutive models assumed for the components and the compatibility conditions chosen to constitute the composite. Numerical analyses of existing experimental reinforced concrete members are presented, illustrating the applicability of the proposed methodology.
