Cellulose was extracted from lignocellulosic fibers and nanocrystalline cellulose (NC) prepared by alkali treatment of the fiber, steam explosion of the mercerized fiber, bleaching of the steam exploded fiber and finally acid treatment by 5% oxalic acid followed again by steam explosion. The average length and diameter of the NC were between 200-250 nm and 4-5 nm, respectively, in a monodisperse distribution. Different concentrations of the NC (0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5% by weight) were dispersed non-covalently into a completely bio-based thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) derived entirely from oleic acid. The physical properties of the TPU nanocomposites were assessed by Fourier Transform Infra-Red spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermo-Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) and Mechanical Properties Analysis. The nanocomposites demonstrated enhanced stress and elongation at break and improved thermal stability compared to the neat TPU. The best results were obtained with 0.5% of NC in the TPU. The elongation at break of this sample was improved from 178% to 269% and its stress at break from 29.3 to 40.5 MPa. In this and all other samples the glass transition temperature, melting temperature and crystallization behavior were essentially unaffected. This finding suggests a potential method of increasing the strength and the elongation at break of typically brittle and weak lipid-based TPUs without alteration of the other physico-chemical properties of the polymer. Mixtures of C6H6 and SF6 were polymerized in an r.f. discharge. Actinometry (quantitative optical emission spectroscopy) was used to determine trends in the plasma concentrations of the species F, H and CH as a function of the proportion of SF6 in the feed. Infrared spectroscopy and electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis were employed to characterize the deposited material. Increasing proportions of SF, in the feed produced increased fragmentation of the benzene molecules and greater fluorination of the deposited material. The deposition rate, as determined by optical interferometry, was found to be enhanced about 4 times by the presence of 10-20% SF6 in the feed. At 50% SF6 in the feed, deposition rates were greater than in pure C6H6 plasmas despite the (probably large) etching effect of atomic fluorine from the discharge. Relationships between the plasma composition, electron density and temperature, film composition and growth rate are discussed.

The effects of ion irradiation on fluorinated plasma polymer films are investigated using profilometry, surface contact-angle measurements, infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Remarkably, helium plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) of several amorphous hydrogenated fluorinated plasma polymers deposited from C(2)H(2)-SF(6), C(6)H(6)-SF(6) or C(6)F(6) produces film compactions of up to 40%, and modifies the surface energy in the 35 to 65 dyn cm(-1) range. As revealed by IRRAS and XPS, the films contain C-H, C-C, C=C, C=O, O-H and C-F groups. XPS spectra confirm the presence of N (typically similar to 5%). The films produced from SF(6)-containing plasmas also contain S. For irradiation times of 80 min, the film carbon content is increased, and the fluorine content is greatly reduced, by factors of about 3 to 15, depending on the initial film composition. The aim of this study is to compare polyurethanes containing castor oil (soft segment) in granular form compared to cancellous bone autograft applied to a segmental bone defect. Norfolk adult female rabbits - approximately 13 months of age with a mean body weight of 4.5 kg - are used. In both radial diaphyses, 1 cm osteoperiosteal segmental defects are created. The defect in the left radius is filled with the castor-oil-based polyurethane, and the right one, filled with cancellous bone autograft, collected from the left proximal humerus. The rabbits are euthanazed at 15, 30, 60, and 120 days postsurgery (5 animals/ period), for histological analyses. By radiographic analyses, at these time points, the bone regeneration is more evident and accelerated in the bone defects treated with the cancellous bone autograft. At 120 days postsurgery, the segmental bone defects treated with the cancellous bone autograft are totally reconstituted and remodeled, while the bone defects treated with polyurethane polymer have bone formation of 79%. Histological study shows that the polyurethane acts as a space filler, minimizing the local production of fibrous tissue. No granule degradation, resorption or any inflammatory reaction is detected. Thus, it is possible to conclude that the castor-oil-plant-based polyurethane - in the granule presentation - is biocompatible and osteointegrated, but does not show the same bone regeneration capacity as the cancellous bone autograft. © 2007 SAGE Publications.

Four aliphatic thermoplastic poly(ester-urethane)s (PEUs) with similar molecular weights but varying polyesters molecular weight (534-1488 g/mol) were prepared from polyester diols, obtained by melt condensation of Azelaic acid and 1,9-Nonanediol, and 1,7-heptamethylene di-isocyanate (HPMDI) all sourced from vegetable oil feedstock. The thermal, and mechanical properties, and crystal structure of PEUs were investigated using DSC, TGA, DMA, tensile analysis and WAXD. For sufficiently long polyester chain, WAXD data indicated no hydrogen bonds polyethylene (PE)-like crystalline packing and for short polyester chains, small crystal domains with significant H-bonded polyamide (PA)-like packing. Crystallinity decreased with decreasing polyester molecular weights. The polymorphism of PEUs and consequently their melting characteristics were found to be largely controlled by polyester segment length. TGA of the PEUs indicated improved thermal stability with decreasing polyester chain length, suggesting a stabilization effect by urethane groups. Mechanical properties investigated by DMA and tensile analysis were found to scale predictably with the overall crystallinity of PEUs. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The electrical characterization of a high efficient multilayer polymer light emitting diode using poly[(2-methoxy-5-hexyloxy)-p-phenylenevinylene] as the emissive layer and an anionic fluorinated surfactant as the electron transport layer was performed. For the sake of comparison, a conventional single layer device was fabricated. The density current vs. voltage measurements revealed that the conventional device has a higher threshold voltage and lower current compared to the surfactant modified device. The effective barrier height for electron injection was suppressed. The influence of the interfaces and bulk contributions to the dc and high frequencies conductivities of the devices was also discussed. (c) 2006 Springer Science + Business Media, Inc.

The synthesis of a poly(azo)urethane by fixing CO2 in bis-epoxide followed by a polymerization reaction with an azodiamine is presented. Since isocyanate is not used in the process, it is termed clean method and the polymers obtained are named NIPUs (non-isocyanate polyurethanes). Langmuir films were formed at the air-water interface and were characterized by surface pressure vs mean molecular area per met unit (Pi-A) isotherms. The Langmuir monolayers were further studied by running stability tests and cycles of compression/expansion (possible hysteresis) and by varying the compression speed of the monolayer formation, the subphase temperature, and the solvents used to prepare the spreading polymer solutions. The Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique was used to fabricate ultrathin films of a particular polymer (PAzoU). It is possible to grow homogeneous LB films of up to 15 layers as monitored using UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. Higher number of layers can be deposited when PAzoU is mixed with stearic acid, producing mixed LB films. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) absorption spectroscopy and Raman scattering showed that the materials do not interact chemically in the mixed LB films. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) and micro-Raman technique (optical microscopy coupled to Raman spectrograph) revealed that mixed LB films present a phase separation distinguishable at micrometer or nanometer scale. Finally, mixed and neat LB films were successfully characterized using impedance spectroscopy at different temperatures, a property that may lead to future application as temperature sensors. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to correlate the data.

Molecular mobility in castor oil based polyurethane was investigated with thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) measurements and alternating-current (ac) dielectric relaxation spectroscopy. Three peaks could be observed in TSDC thermograms from 173 to 373 K. The relaxation located at 213 K could be attributed to the change in the molecular chain due to the interaction between the isocyanate and the solvent, and it was well fitted with the Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann equation. The other two peaks were located at 274 and 365 K and could be attributed to interfacial polarization and space charge, respectively. (c) 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Highly fluorinated plasma polymers are chemically inert, acid resistant and have low friction coefficients, thereby being useful in chemical laboratories and for tribological applications. Here we report the plasma polymerization of ethylene-hexafluorobenzene mixtures by PECVD. The principal parameter of interest is the proportion of C(6)F(6) in the feed, R(F). Films were analyzed using near-normal and grazing-angle Infrared Reflection Absorption Spectroscopy (IRRAS), the latter being particularly useful for detecting modes not usually observed at near-normal incidence. The presence of CH and CF(x) (x=1 to 2) groups was thus confirmed in films deposited with R(F)>= 40%. Depending on R(F) IRRAS also revealed the presence of -CH(x) (x=1 to 3) -C=C, -C=O and phenyl rings. Deconvolution of C is spectra obtained by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the presence of CH, CF and CF(2) groups in films deposited with R(F)>= 40%. Atomic ratios of F:C calculated from the XPS spectral data show that the degree of fluorination rises with increasing RF Some unbound fluorine is present in the films. Post-deposition reactions account for the presence of oxygen (similar to 5%) in the films. Surface energies, determined from contact angle measurements, fall with increasing R(F). It is presented a study conducted on the physical and electrochemical properties of fluorinated a-C:H films deposited onto a commercial aluminum alloy (AA 5052). The coatings were deposited from mixtures of 91% of acetylene and 9% of argon by plasma immersion ion implantation and deposition technique, PIIID. Total gas pressure was 44 Pa and deposition time (t(dep)) was varied from 300 to 1200 s. The depositing plasmas were generated by the application of radiofrequency power (13.56 MHz, 100W) to the upper electrode and high voltage negative pulses (2400 V. 300 Hz) to the sample holder. Fluorine was incorporated in a post-deposition plasma treatment (13.56 MHz, 70W, 13 Pa) generated from sulfur hexafluoride atmosphere. Chemical structure and composition of the films were investigated using infrared reflectance/absorbance spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The corrosion resistance of the layers was determined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in a 3.5% NaCl solution, at room temperature. Films presented good adhesion to the substrates and are classified as hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) with oxygen traces. Fluorine was detected in all the samples after the post-deposition treatment being its proportion independent on the deposition time. Film thickness presented different tendencies with t(dep), revealing the variation of the deposition rate as a function of the deposition time. Such fluorinated a-C:H films improved the corrosion resistance of the aluminum surface. In a general way the corrosion resistance was higher for films prepared with lower deposition times. The variation of sample temperature with t(dep) was found to be decisive for the concentration of defects in the films and, consequently, for the performance of the samples in electrochemical tests. Results are interpreted in terms of the energy delivered to the growing layer by ionic bombardment. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The authors analysed the simultaneous effects of the dimensional and weight alteration of resins utilized for esthetic facets submitted to warehousing conditions and periods of time. The resins showed different behaviour and a neat correlation between dimensional alteration and weight. The condition of immersion promoted dimensional alteration 50% lower and an alteration of weight three times higher.

Ferroelectric ceramic particles based on lead titanate zirconate (PZT) were dispersed in a polymer matrix based on castor oil. After the poling process, the pyroelectric activity of this composite was measured using a direct method in which a linear heating rate was applied to the pre-poled samples. The pyroelectric coefficient at 343 K is comparable with that of a PZT-poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) composite and significantly higher than that of PVDF. © 1998 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

Flexible and free-standing films of piezoelectric composites made up of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramic powder dispersed in a castor oil-based polyurethane (PU) matrix were obtained by spin coating and characterized as materials for sensor applications. The piezoelectric coefficients d 31 and d 33 were measured with the usual technique. The piezoelectric charge constant d 33 yields values up to ≤24 pC/N, even at lower PZT content (33 vol%). Some desirable properties like piezoelectricity, flexibility and good mechanical resistance show this new material to be a good alternative for use as sensors and actuators.
