This paper describes 2 alternative methodologies for the determination of selected aldehydes (formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, acrolein, and benzaldehyde) by capillary electrophoresis (CE), the first approach is based on the formation of aldehyde-bisulfite adducts and employs free solution CE with reversed electroosmotic flow and indirect detection, using 10 mmol/L 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid (pH 4.5) containing 0.2 mmol/L cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as the electrolyte. This novel methodology showed a fairly good sensitivity to concentration, with detection limits with respect to a single aldehyde on the order of 10-40 mu g/L, a reasonable analysis time (separation was achieved in <8 min), and no need for sample manipulation. A second approach was proposed in which 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine derivatives of the aldehydes were detected in a micellar electrolyte medium (20 mmol/L berate buffer containing 50 mmol/L sodium dodecyl sulfate and 15 mmol/L beta-cyclodextrin). This latter methodology included a laborious sample preconcentration step and showed much poorer sensitivity (0.5-2 mg/L detection limit, with respect to a single aldehyde), despite the use of sodium chloride to promote sample stacking. Both methodologies proved adequate to evaluate aldehyde levels in vehicular emissions. Samples from the tailpipe exhaust of a passenger car vehicle without a catalytic converter and operated with an ethanol-based fuel were collected and analyzed; the results showed high levels of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde (0.41-6.1 ppm, v/v). The concentrations estimated by the 2 methodologies, which were not in good agreement, suggest the possibility of striking differences in sample collection efficiency, which was not the concern of this work.

Cashew apple nectar is a secondary product from the production of cashew nuts and possesses an exotic tropical aroma. Aroma volatiles in pasteurized and reconstituted (from concentrate) Brazilian cashew apple nectars were determined using GC-MS and split, time-intensity GC-olfactometry (GC-O/GC-FID. Methional, (2)-1,5-octadien-3-one, (2)-2-nonenal, (E,Z)-2,4-decadienal, (E,E)-2,4-decadienal, beta-damascenone, and delta-decalactone were identified for the first time in cashew apple products. These compounds plus butyric acid, ethyl 3-methylbutyrate, 2-methylbutyric acid, acetic acid, benzaldehyde, homofuraneol, (E)-2-nonenal, gamma-dodecalactone, and an unknown were the most intense aroma volatiles. Thirty-six aroma volatiles were detected in the reconstituted sample and 41 in the pasteurized sample. Thirty-four aroma active components were common to both samples. Ethyl 3-methylbutyrate and 2-methylbutyric acid were character impact compounds of cashew apple (warm, fruity, tropical, sweaty). Using GC-pFPD, 2-methyl-3-furanthiol and bis(2-methyl-3-furyl) disulfide were identified for the first time in cashew apple. Both were aroma active (meaty).

6,8-Dimethoxy-3-(2'-oxo-propyl)-coumarin (1) and 2,4-dihydroxy-6-[(1'E,3'E)-penta-1', 3'-dienyl]-benzaldehyde (2), in addition to the known compound periconicin B (3), were isolated from the ethyl acetate extract of Periconia atropurpurea, an endophytic fungus obtained from the leaves of Xylopia aromatica, a native plant of the Brazilian Cerrado. Their chemical structures were assigned based on analyses of MS, 1D and 2D-NMR spectroscopic experiments. Biological analyses were performed using two mammalian cell lines, human cervix carcinoma (HeLa) and Chinese hamster ovary (CHO). The results showed that compound I had no effect when compared to the control group, which was treated with the vehicle (DMSO). Compound 2 was able to induce a slight increase in cell proliferation of HeLa (37% of increase) and CHO (38% of increase) cell lines. Analysis of compound 3 showed that it has potent cytotoxic activity against both cell lines, with an IC50 of 8.0 mu M. Biological analyses using the phytopathogenic fungi Cladosporium sphaerospermum and C. cladosporioides revealed that also 2 showed potent antifungal activity compared to nystatin. The composition of the essential oil from leaves of Cryptocarya mandioccana has been determined by chromatographic fractionation and GC-FID, GC-MS and C-13 NMR analyses, yielding the identification of 64 compounds with predominance of isomeric sesquiterpenes with molecular weights of 204. The main components of the oil obtained by hydrodistillation were beta-caryophyllene, spathulenol, caryophyllene oxide, delta-cadinene, germacrene D, benzaldehyde and bicyclogermacrene. However, the oil obtained by steam distillation contained higher levels of sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, with predominance of P-caryophyllene (C), germacrene D (G) and bicyclogermacrene (B), and was considered to be more representative of the composition of the oil in its natural state. The intraspecific chemical variability of the essential oil obtained by steam distillation was evaluated within populations of trees growing at three separate locations in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Three distinct chemical groups could be characterised due to differences in the relative percentages of the three main sesquiterpenes from essential oil: CGB [relative contents of C (14-34%), G (5-28%), B (8-15%)], BCG [B (17-34%), C (9-24%), G (12-25%)] and GCB [G (22-42%), C (4-17%), B (7-15%)]. Individuals from groups CGB and BCG were found to be more frequent at south locations while group GCB is predominant in north location. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Two highly sensitive and selective methods based on gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in the selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode have been developed for the quantification of 2,6-dichlorophenol (2,6-DCP), a sex pheromone of the tick females of Anocentor nitens. Standard addition method and calibration curve techniques using 5-bromine-4-hydroxy-3- methoxybenzaldehyde (5-BrV) as internal standard (IS) afforded detection limit of 0.1ngml-1. The calibration curve was linear over the concentration range from 0.5 to 500ngml-1 for 2,6-DCP. Results show that the concentration range of sex pheromone in the extracts samples was 1.08-10.35ngml-1. The methods developed provided reliable procedures to determine amounts of 2,6-DCP present in ticks. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Multicomponent Reactions are defined as reactions between three or more reagents in a single reaction step in the same reaction vial, forming a product that includes the majority of atoms and structural characteristics of the reagents. Thus these reactions save time and energy. One of the ways to improve the yield and reaction time of a multicomponent reaction is to use different catalysts, an example of catalyst that shows great potential and has been studied in recent years is the molecular iodine is known to be a Lewis acid with high catalytic power. The functionalized piperidines, also known as tetrahydropyridines, are alkaloids that have pharmacological potential, this is due to the piperidine ring present in many natural product structures with muscarinic activity, nicotine, analgesic, antipsychotic, anti-proliferative, among others. In this paper we describe studies about on the application of molecular iodine (I2) in the multicomponent reaction between aniline derivatives, benzaldehyde and β-ketoester (methyl acetoacetate) for the synthesis of functionalized piperidines and the synthesis of a corresponding piperidone by acid hydrolysis. Data analysis allowed us to demonstrate the efficacy of molecular iodine in the synthesis of functionalized piperidines, obtaining results with yields 44-87% and short reaction time of 8 to 24 hours, and the efficacy of acid hydrolysis of enamine in the structure of the tetrahydropyridine derivative in a yield of 81%
