Purpose: To evaluate the effect of the addition of sodium trimetaphosphate (TMP) with or without fluoride on enamel demineralization, and the hardness and release of fluoride and TMP of resin composites. Methods: Bovine enamel slabs (4x3x3 mm) were prepared and selected based on initial surface hardness (n= 96). Eight experimental resin composites were formulated, according to the combination of TMP and sodium fluoride (NaF): TMP/NaF-free (control), 1.6% sodium fluoride (NaF), and 1.5%, 14.1% and 36.8% TMP with and without 1.6% NaF. Resin composite specimens (n= 24) were attached to the enamel slabs with wax and the sets were subjected to pH cycling. Next, surface and cross-sectional hardness and fluoride content of enamel as well as fluoride and TNT release and hardness of the materials were evaluated. Data were statistically analyzed using ANOVA (P< 0.05). Results: The presence of fluoride in enamel was similar in fluoridated resin composites (P> 0.05), but higher than in the other materials (P< 0.05). The combination of 14.1% TMP and fluoride resulted in less demineralization, especially on lesion surface (P< 0.05). The presence of TMP increased fluoride release from the materials and reduced their hardness.

The Orchidaceae is one of the most numerous and diversified families in the Plant Kingdom. Miltonia flavescens Lindl. is a native orchid to the southern region of Brazil. Studies related to the nutrition and fertilization of orchids are scarce, specific and existent only for few species. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of different doses of a slow release fertilizer (Osmocote (R) 9/15/12 + micro) on the development of M. flavescens var. stellata Regel cultivated in pots with pine bark and coconut fiber (1:1, v:v) as the substrate. The treatments consisted of: no fertilizer application (control), application of 2.5 g, 5 g and 10 g of fertilizer per liter of substrate. The experimental design was set in randomized blocks, with five replications and three plants per plot. The experiment was carried out along 25 months and the fertilizer was applied every five months. The evaluated plant parameters were: length of the longest pseudobulb, number of pseudobulbs, diameter of pseudobulbs, number of shoots, number of leaves and flowering. There was a significant increment on all evaluated characteristics with the increase of the fertilizer dose. The highest dose provided a more profuse flowering, with a larger number of flower stems and flowers, in addition to bigger flower stems and flowers. These results show that the supply of nutrients in an appropriate amount is of a great importance for the development and flowering of M. flavescens.

This study investigated the effect on solubility and release of ternary complexes of sulfamerazine (SMR) with beta-(beta CD), methyl-(M beta CD) and hydroxypropyl-P-cyclodextrin (HP beta CD) using meglumine (MEG) as the ternary component. The combination of MEG with M beta CD resulted the best approach, with an increased effect (29-fold) of the aqueous solubility of SMR. The mode of inclusion was supported by 2D NMR, which indicated that real ternary complexes were formed between SMR, MEG and M beta CD or HP beta CD. Solid state analysis was performed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), which demonstrated that different interactions occurred among SMR, MEG and M beta CD or HP beta CD in the ternary lyophilized systems. The ternary complexes with beta CD and M beta CD produced an additional retention effect on the release of SMR compared to the corresponding binary complexes, implying that they were clearly superior in terms of solubility and release modulation. This study tested the fluoride-release rate and the root caries inhibitory effect of dental adhesives. In phase 1, the fluoride released from samples (n = 5) of the adhesives A (Optibond Solo), B (One-up Bond F), C (Prime & Bond NT), D (Tenure Quick), and also of the controls [+] (glass-ionomer cement) and [-] (non-fluoride releasing adhesive), was quantified on a daily basis during a pH-cycling, caries-simulating phenomenon. In phase 2, restorations were made in bovine root dentine slabs (n = 16) with the same adhesives associated with a non-fluoridated composite. Control [+] restorations were made entirely with glass-ionomer cement. Specimens were thermocycled and submitted to the pH-cycling regimen. Demineralization areas and the presence of the wall lesion (WL) and the inhibition zone (IZ) were determined by polarizing light microscopy in dentine adjacent to the restoration. The highest concentration of fluoride was released by the control [+]; adhesives A, B and C, also released fluoride. No detectable amount of fluoride was released by D or [-]. Smaller areas of demineralization were found with control [+], whereas the demineralization areas of adhesives A-D and [-] did not differ from each other. No WL was detected, and higher percentages of IZ were recorded to [+] and to adhesive A. Although some dental adhesives were able to release fluoride, they could not inhibit secondary caries development as well as the glass-ionomer cement.

Film forming polymeric systems represents a new and unexplored technology of systems forskin or wounds protection and for controlled drug release. The aim of this work was to study the use of polymeric organic-inorganic ureasil-polyether hybrids synthesized by the sol-gel process as film forming system containing silver sulfadiazine as model drug. The film formationtime can be controlled by changing the precursor/catalyst ratio used during the step of hydrolysis and condensations. The results showed that the precursor/catalyst proportion influences both the visual characteristics and time required to form the film. The precursor/catalyst ratio equal to 20.8 m/v was considered ideal due to promote the homogeneous and transparent film formation in less than 5 minutes. The release profile of sulfadiazine is dependent on the characteristics of the matrixes: matrix more hydrophobic as ureasil-POP provided a slowed released mainly due to the low swelling of the matrix. The more hydrophilic ureasil-POE matrix presents a large capacity to swell and favors the faster release of the drug. The set of results showed the possibility of future use of these systems for treating wounds caused by burns.

Natural rubber latex from Hevea brasiliensis has interesting characteristics related to this work such as: it is easy to manipulate, low cost, can stimulate the natural angiogenesis, is a biocompatible material and presents high mechanical resistance. The aim of this study was to develop a novel sustained delivery system for Stryphnodendron sp. based on Natural Rubber Latex (NRL) membranes and to study the Stryphnodendron sp. delivery system behavior. Stryphnodendron sp., commonly known as barbatimao is extensively used in folk medicine for the treatment of diarrhoea, gynaecological problems and for healing wounds. The stem bark of this species is mentioned in the Brazilian Pharmacopeia with a content of at least 20% of tannins. Previous studies showed significant cicatrizant properties, anti-inflammatory activity and gastric anti-ulcerogenic effects for the stem bark crude extract. One possible way to accelerate the tissue repair process, it was incorporated the Stryphnodendron sp. extract in NRL membranes. Stryphnodendron sp extract was incorporated into the NRL, by mixing it in solution for in vitro protein delivery experiments. Results show that the NRL membrane can release Stryphnodendron sp. for up to 49.89% of its Stryphnodendron sp. content for up 400 h. The kinetics of the extract release could be fitted with double exponential function, with two characteristic times of 0.78 and 133.22 h. In this study, we demonstrated that the induced angiogenesis provided by NRL membranes combined with a controlled release of extract is relevant for biomedical applications.
