The aim of this research was to estimate the skeletal growth and development by observingradiographically the morphological changes of the first, second and third cervical vertebrae, according to the method proposed by Hassel &Farman32 (1995) in patients who were going through the outbreak of pubertal growth. The radiographic inspection of the cervical vertebrae was performed by means of cephalometric radiographs and the outbreak of pubertal growth was identified through the events of ossification of the hand and wrist. For that purpose, we selected thecephalometric radiographs and hand•wrist radiographs of 110 Brazilianleukoderms, male and female, with chronological age ranging from 8 to 14,6 years old for the girls and from 9,5 to 15,4 years old for the boys. The results showed that there was a statistically significant correlation between the maturation indicators of the cervical vertebrae and the patients who were going through the outbreak of pubertal growth. The conclusion was that the radiographic evalution of the changes of the cervical vertebrae, in the cephalometric radiographs, is an alternative parameter, which is reliable and practical in the skeletal evalution, and the it completes the range of information that must be obtained from the patient under orthodontic treatment and that it can, circumstantially, replace other methods of evalution

Examining three bleaching systems, this in vivo clinical trial evaluated the relationship among tooth sensitivity, light activation, and agent concentration, and it correlated dental sensitivity with tooth thickness.Materials and Methods: Eighty-seven volunteer patients were included. Inclusion criteria were the presence of anterior teeth without restorations as well as the absence of a previous bleaching experience and absence of non-carious cervical lesions or dental pain. Exclusion criteria included pregnancy or breastfeeding, a maximum of TF3 hypoplasia, tetracycline-fluorosis stains, malpositioned teeth, orthodontic treatment, periodontal disease, and/or analgesic/anti-inflammatory intake. Patients were randomly assigned to three bleaching groups: Group A (n=25) was treated with 15% H2O2 and nitrogenous-titanium-dioxide and was light activated (Lase Peroxide Lite, DMC, SaoCarlos, Sao Paulo, Brazil); Group B (n=27) was treated with 35% H2O2 and was light activated (Lase Peroxide Sensy, DMC); and Group C (n=35) was treated with 35% H2O2 (White Gold Office, Dentsply, 38West Clark Ave., Milford, USA) without light activation. Tooth sensitivity (TS) was self-reported by the patients using the visual analog scale (VAS) at baseline (TSO), immediately after treatment (TSI), and at seven days after treatment (TS7). In 46 patients, tooth thickness was determined by computed tomography. TSO, TSI, and TS7 were compared between the A and B groups to determine the effect of concentration and between the B and C groups to determine the effect of light using analysis of covariance. The correlation between tooth thickness and TSI was determined by Spearman Rho test (SPSS 15).Results: Eighty-seven patients were evaluated at baseline, and 61 were evaluated at seven days. Separated by groups, tooth sensitivity, expressed as VAS value at the time points TS0, TS1, and TS7, respectively, were as follows: Group A: 13.76 +/- 13.53, 24.40 +/- 25.24, and 5.94 +/- 5.5; Group B: 15.07 +/- 18.14, 42.4 +/- 31.78, and 8.68 +/- 17.99; and Group C: 10.80 +/- 14.83, 31.51 +/- 29.34, and 7.24 +/- 9.2. Group A showed significantly lower tooth sensitivity than group B at TSI (p=0.032). No differences were observed in the tooth sensitivities between groups B and C. No correlation was encountered between tooth thickness and tooth sensitivity immediately after treatment (Rho=-0.088,p=0.563). The median tooth thickness was 2.78 +/- 0.21 mm.Conclusions: Increases in the concentration of bleaching agents directly affect tooth sensitivity, and LED/laser activation and tooth thickness are not correlated with tooth sensitivity after dental bleaching.

The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the amount of skeletal and dental expansion in patients submitted to surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion (SARPE). The sample consisted of 21 patients (14 female and seven male) with a mean age of 25.4 years (range 17.4-41.8 years). Postero-anterior (PA) cephalograms were taken pre-expansion (T1), immediately after expansion (T2), and at post-expansion retention of 120 days (T3). SARPE promoted significant transverse skeletal changes, which were maintained from T2 to T3. Dentoalveolar expansion and dental tipping were also observed in the region of the first molars and first premolars; however the net effect at the first molars was significantly less than that at the first premolars. No statistically significant effect on the width of the nasal cavity was observed. The findings indicate that peculiarities inherent to dental effects may influence the clinical options for SARPE. Skeletal expansions with SARPE were significant and stable. Dental changes were different between molars and premolars. The transverse changes after SARPE should be observed for future procedures related to the retention and the completion of orthodontic treatment.

One hundred non-patient dentistry students aged 17 to 25, were interviewed through questionnaire and were clinically examined in order to asses the prevalence and degree of severtty of Craniomandibular Dysfunction, through indeces which are subdivided into three classes: anaminestic index, clinical dysfunction index, and occlusal index. The following variables were introduced to the original indeces: sex, age, and whether the subjects had or had not received orthodontic treatment. The results showed that 42% of the subjects presented mild subjective symptoms whereas, no one showed severe subjective symptoms. Women, as well as the older subjects, showed a higher trend to presenting more subjective complaints. Subjects, whether treated orthodontically or not, showed a similar trend to having dysfunction symptoms. Fifty-six per cent of the subjects presented some score of clinical dysfunction, 25% of them showed moderate or severe clinical dysfunction. Women showed a statistically significant higher index. The older subjects trented to have indeces with more severe degrees. Orthodontic treatment suggested to have no influence on the clinical dysfunction index. Sixty-six per cent of the subjects showed a mild occlusal index and 11% a severe occlusal index. Sex, age, and orthodontic treatment did not show any significant difference as to the presence or absence of malocclusion

This research presents the results of a cephalometric radiography study, in frontal norm, that was used to measure the possible linear correlations between several linear dimensions of the face, in a sample of a 140 caucasian brazilians, with an average age of 20 years, who were distributed in 2 groups as follows: Control group - formed of 35 males and 35 females, with no apparent facial deformities and with dental oclusion, not necessarily, in Angle's Class I; Unilateral cleft lip and palate group - formed of 35 males and 35 females with surgical correction of the up in the first year and of the palate until the third year of life, without orthodontic treatment. ln each teleradiography, the following parameters were measured using a computer: - Lateral orbit width or external orbit width (LOe) - Medial orbit width or internal orbit width (LOI) - Zygomatic width or facial width (LZI) - Mastold width (LMa) - Maxilar width (LMx) - Nasal width (LNa) - Condilar width (LCo) - Antigonial width (LGa) The values obtained were treated statistically using quantitative analysis (arithmetic mean, standard deviation, standard mean error, Person's variation factor and Pearson factor linear correlation). Theirs significance was established by Student's t test. The Pearson factor linear correlations determined between transverse linear cephalometric width dimensions of face in frontal norm for individuals of both groups and sex, with an average age of 20 years, were: ...

As an innovative transitory anchorage device, the mini-implants deserve to be described with details regarding its use and action during orthodontic treatment. Therefore, this paper intents to present some biomechanic criteria adopted to for a better use of mini-implants as anchorage in anterior retraction (space closure), molar distalization, mesial movement of the molars, intrusion of molars and as support to provisional implant.

This clinical report describes an adult patient referred for orthodontic treatment with mini-implants as anchorage to correct the root angulation of maxillary lateral incisors. The purpose of this report was to demonstrate the versatility of mini-implants placed in a vertical direction in esthetic areas. During orthodontic treatment, some aspects must be observed to preserve the interim restoration against the occlusal loads to avoid screw fracture. A fixed appliance was placed to correct the position of the maxillary anterior teeth and to complete the treatment. Acceptable esthetics and function were achieved.
