The effect of the presence of tartrate additive on the chemical stability of a Cu-Sn acid bath was evaluated. It was observed that this additive hinders decomposition of the Cu/Sn deposition bath with storage time, since the decrease in electrochemical efficiency was attenuated. In addition, it was observed that optimal galvanostatic deposition with or without tartrate occurs at approximately 11 mA cm(-2). However, in the presence of tartrate the deposition charge was lower, leading to lower energy consumption. SEM analysis showed that the tartrate added to the plating bath caused a marked change in the morphology of the Cu/Sn films obtained gal vanostatic ally. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. Nanocrystalline FeCuNbSiB alloys obtained from the partial crystallization of amorphous alloys have attracted technological attention due to their excellent magnetic properties, but the relationship between corrosion resistance and magnetic properties is not well established. The influence of Nb as an alloying element and effect of partial crystallization on the corrosion resistance of Fe73.5Si13.5B10Cu1, Fe73.5Si13.5B7Nb3Cu1 and Fe73.5Si13.5B5Nb5Cu1 amorphous alloys were studied and the effect of corrosion on magnetization saturation flux density, B-s, was investigated. The addition of niobium on amorphous alloys increases the corrosion resistance. The raise of Nb content from 3 to 5% increases the corrosion resistance also. A partial crystallization increases the corrosion resistance of the samples with Nb. However, in the samples without Nb, the partial crystallization diminishes the corrosion resistance. The values of B-s depend on the alloy corrosion resistance.) (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

A novel common Tabu algorithm for global optimizations of engineering problems is presented. The robustness and efficiency of the presented method are evaluated by using standard mathematical functions and hy solving a practical engineering problem. The numerical results show that the proposed method is (i) superior to the conventional Tabu search algorithm in robustness, and (ii) superior to the simulated annealing algorithm in efficiency. The usual design of field-emission displays (FEDs) often results in high vacuum pressure gradients inside the glass plates of the device, and this is the main limitation to the widespread availability of large area FEDs. In this paper, we perform theoretical calculations using the finite element method for determining the pressure distributions in several pumping configurations, including a new FED configuration known as porous FED or pFED. The approach here is capable of clarifying the design issues influencing the final pressure relevant to the field-emission display devices. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

This work presents experimental information relevant to the combustion of biomass in a bubbling fluidized bed. The biomass distribution in a fluidized bed was studied through tests performed in a cold bed, while the volatiles released in the biomass pyrolysis, the burning rate of the resulting charcoal, and the combustion control regime, were studied through tests performed in a high temperature bed.Visual examination of photographs taken from a transparent walls bed, with a rectangular cross-section, showed that the large fuel particles, typical of biomass processing, were distributed in the bubbles, in the splash zone, and in the emulsion phase. The occurrence of biomass in the emulsion phase was favored by burning biomass particles of greater density and smaller size-expetimentally determined in each case. Decreasing the fuel particle size improved the biomass distribution inside the bed. The same was accomplished by increasing the superficial gas velocity as high as possible, compatibly with the acceptable elutriation.Burning tests showed that the biomass fuels have the advantage of reaching the diffusional regime at temperatures that can be lower than 1000 K, which ensures that the biomass fuels burn in a stable regime. The feasibility of using Streptomyces clavuligerus ATCC 27064 bioparticles supported on alginate gel containing alumina to produce clavulanic acid (CA) was investigated. To this end, effectiveness factors for spherical bioparticles, relating respiration rates of immobilised and free cells, were experimentally determined for various dissolved oxygen (DO) levels and bioparticle radii. Monod kinetics was assumed as representative of the oxygen consuming reaction, while internal oxygen diffusion was considered the limiting step. A comparison was made of the results from a tower bioreactor operating under batch, repeated-batch and continuous conditions with immobilised bioparticles. The theoretical curve of the effectiveness factor for the zero-order reaction model, considering an inert nucleus - the dead core model - was very well fitted to the experimental data. The results of the bioprocess indicated that the batch operation was the most efficient and productive, requiring a do concentration in the reactor above 60% of the saturation value. Amino acids are well metabolized by Streptomyces clavuligerus during the production of clavulanic acid using glycerol as main carbon and energy source. However, only a few amino acids such as arginine and ornithine are favorable for CA biosynthesis. The aim of this work was to optimize the glycerol:ornithine molar ratio in the feed medium containing only these compounds to maximize CA production in continuous cultivation. A minimum number of experiments were performed by means of a simple two-level full-factorial central composite design to investigate the combined effect of glycerol and ornithine feeding on the CA concentration during the intermittent and continuous process in shake-flasks. Statistical analysis of the experimental data using the response surface methodology showed that a glycerol-to-ornithine molar ratio of approximately 40:1 in the feed medium resulted in the highest CA concentration when fermentation was stopped. Under these optimized conditions, in bench-scale fermentor runs, the CA concentration reached more than double the concentration obtained in shake-flasks runs. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V.
