A photocontraction effect in amorphous films of the binary glass system 0.20 [Sb(PO3)(3)](n)-0.80 Sb2O3 has been observed after UV irradiation using the 350.7 nm Kr+ ion laser line with 5.0 W/cm(2). Good optical quality films up to 4.0 mum were deposited on silica substrates at room temperature in vacuum by electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) and characterized using WDX, XRD, optical absorption, infrared reflectance, profilometry and atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques. Very stable glasses were prepared by the melt quenching technique and used as evaporation source for the production of films. The photoinduced structural change (PSC) was observed as a variation of about 6% in the film thickness and this effect is accompanied by a photobleaching of the irradiated area with a blue shift of the optical absorption edge. Otherwise this photoinduced change in the film thickness is very sensitive to the variations in the shape and intensity of the laser beam; therefore several possibilities in optical recording arise from these results. We have measured the effect of an applied magnetic field on the current through thin films of two different organic conjugated polymers that have previously shown to exhibit magnetoresistance, poly(9,9-dioctyl-1,4-fluorenylenevinylene) and poly(9,9-dioctyl-2,7-fluorenylenevinylene). The results show that the magnetic field releases trapped charges from inside the material and enhances the current. We have also performed optical absorption experiments on these polymer films under applied voltage and magnetic field. The results show that the magnetic field produces a change in the optical absorption in the low-energy range associated with deep traps and only under conditions when these traps are likely charged. These two results provide a strong case for the release of trapped charges caused by the magnetic field as being the cause of the magneto resistance in these polymers and possibly in other organic materials where magnetoresistance was recently observed. Fluoroindate glasses of the following compositions: (40-x)InF3-20ZnF(2)-16BaF(2)-20SrF(2)-2GdF(3)-2NaF-xTmF(3) with x = 1,3 mol% were prepared in a dry box under an argon atmosphere. The absorption spectra at room temperature in the spectral range 350-2200 nm were obtained. The spectra obtained for each sample had similar absorption and only the amplitude of the different bands changed as the concentration of Tm3+. The experimental oscillator strengths were determined from the areas under the absorption bands. Using the standard and modified Judd-Ofelt theory, intensity parameters Ohm(lambda) (lambda = 2,4,6) and (lambda = 2,3,4,5,6), respectively for f-f transitions of Tm3+ ions as well as transition probabilities, branching ratios and radiative lifetimes for each band were determined. The results are compared with those of other glasses described in the literature. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work we present high resolution Doppler limited absorption spectra measurements of the C-O stretching mode of (CH3OH)-C-13, obtained from diode laser spectroscopy, and the Fourier Transform spectrum obtained at 0. 12 cm-1 resolution. By using these data and previously known spectroscopic information, we determined the frequency and the J quantum number for the multiplets of the P and R(J) branches of the C-O stretching fundamental band. Infrared transitions in coincidence with emission lines of the regular CO2 laser and some of its isotope parents are pointed out.

In this work an analysis of the phenomenological Omega(lambda) intensity parameters for the Tm3+ ion in fluoroindate glass is made using the standard Judd-Ofelt theory, and a modified oscillator strength taking into account odd-order contributions is utilized. Different sets of phenomenological intensity parameters Omega(lambda) (lambda=1,2,3,4,5,6) are discussed. The set of better quality is used to analyze the influence of third-order effects through odd intensity parameters in the new approximation. Fluoroindate glasses of compositions (40-x)InF3-20ZnF(2)-20SrF(2)-16BaF(2)-2GdF(3)-2NaF-xTmF(3) with x=1, 2 and 3 mol% were prepared, and the absorption spectra at room temperature in the spectral range from 300 to 2500 nm were obtained. The experimental oscillator strengths determined from the area under the absorption band are compared to the calculated ones. (C) 1998 Elsevier B.V. S.A.

Cobalt(II) and nickel(II) djenkolates CoC7H12N2O4S2. H2O (I) and NiC7H12N2O4S2. H2O (II) were synthesized by the reaction of potassium djenkolate with the respective chlorides. LR spectra suggested coordination via the COO- and NH2 groups for the ligands in both compounds. Visible absorption spectra confirmed the octahedral structure of the complexes. X-ray powder diffraction patterns were indexed in the orthorhombic and monoclinic unit cells with parameters: a = 11.35, b = 7.35, c = 6.85 Angstrom for I and a = 11.54, b = 7.45, c = 6.90 Angstrom, beta = 94.95 degrees for II.

Photoexpansion and photobleaching effects have been examined in glass compositions Ga10Ge25S65 and Ga5Ge25As5S65. Such compositions are promising for optical storage and planar waveguide applications. To evaluate the photoinduced effect, samples were exposed to 351 nm light, varying power density (3-10 W/cm(2)) and exposure time (0-120 min). The exposed areas have been analyzed using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and an expansion of 800 nm is observed for composition Ga10Ge25S65 exposed during 120 min and 5 W/cm(2) power density. The optical absorption edge measured by a spectrophotometer indicates a blue shift (80 nm) after illumination in the composition Ga10Ge25S65. The morphology was examined using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The chemical compositions measured using a energy dispersive analyzer (EDX) indicate an increase of the number of sulfur atoms in the irradiated area. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Glassy films of Ga10Ge25S65 with 4 mu m thickness were deposited on quartz substrates by electron beam evaporation. Photoexpansion (PE) (photoinduced increase in volume) and photobleaching (PB) (blue shift of the bandgap) effects have been examined. The exposed areas have been analyzed using perfilometer and an expansion of 1.7 mu m (Delta V/V approximate to 30%) is observed for composition Ga10Ge25S65 exposed during 180 min and 3 mW/cm(2) power density. The optical absorption edge measured for the film Ge25Ga10S65 above and below the bandgap show that the blue shift of the gap by below bandgap photon illumination is considerable higher (Delta E-g = 440 meV) than Delta E-g induced by above bandgap illumination (Delta E-g = 190 meV). The distribution of the refraction index profile showed a negative change of the refraction index in the irradiated samples (Delta n = -0.6). The morphology was examined using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The chemical compositions measured using an energy dispersive analyzer (EDX) indicate an increase of the oxygen atoms into the irradiated area. Using a Lloyd's mirror setup for continuous wave holography it was possible to record holographic gratings using the photoinduced effects that occur in them. Diffraction efficiency up to 25% was achieved for the recorded gratings and atomic force microscopy images are presented. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This work describes the influence of the ion bombardment on the electrical, optical and mechanical properties of polymer films deposited from radio-frequency plasmas of benzene. Irradiations were conducted using N+ at 5 x 10(19) ions/m(2), varying the ion energy, E-0, from 0 to 150 keV. Film elemental composition was determined by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy. Electrical resistivity and hardness were obtained by the two-point probe and nanoindentation technique, respectively. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy was employed to investigate the optical constants of the samples. Etching rate was determined by exposure of the films to reactive oxygen plasmas. Ion bombardment induced gradual loss of H and increase in C and O concentrations with Eo. As a consequence the electrical, optical and mechanical properties were drastically affected. Interpretation of these results is proposed in terms of chain cross-linking and unsaturation. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique is a powerful tool to fabricate ultrathin films with highly ordered structures and controllable molecular array for efficient energy and electron transfer, allowing the construction of devices at molecular level. One method to obtain LB films consists in the mixture of classical film-forming molecules, for example Stearic Acid (SA) and functional metal complex. In this work NH(4)[Eu(bmdm)(4)], where the organic ligand bmdm is (butyl methoxy-dibenzoyl-methane) or (1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-(4-tert-butylphenyl)propane-1,3-dione) was used to build up Langmuir and LB films. Langmuir isotherms were obtained from (i) NH(4)[Eu(bmdm)(4)] complex and (ii) NH(4)[Eu(bmdm)(4)]/SA (1:1). Results indicated that (i) form multilayer structure; however the surface pressure was insufficient to obtain LB films, and (ii) can easily reproduce and build LB films. The dependence of number of layers in the UV absorption spectra suggest that the complex did not hydrolyze or show decomposition, UV spectral differences observed between the solution and the LB film indicate that the complex has a highly ordered arrangement in the film and the complex has an interaction with SA. Excitation spectra confirm a ligand-europium energy transfer mechanism. The transition lines of Eu(3+) ion were observed in emission spectra of all films, the photoluminescence spectra indicate a fluorescence enhanced effect with the number of LB layers. Transparent oxyfluoride glasses and beta-PbF(2) nanocrystals containing glass-ceramics were prepared with varying Eu(3+) content (0.3, 0.4, 0.5 and 0.6%). The effect of Eu(3+) content on the preparation of glass-ceramics was investigated. From differential scanning calorimetry, the T(x)-T(g)(T(x)-temperature of the onset of crystallization; T(g)-glass transition temperature) parameter for glasses has shown slight variation, and an exothermic peak near T(g) called the ceramization temperature (T(c)) has been observed. Heat treatments were performed at this temperature to obtain transparent glass-ceramics containing beta-PbF(2) nanocrystals, identified by x-ray diffraction. Heat treatments for different periods of time were performed and were observed to be very important in the control of the crystal size and of the crystallization rate. Based upon the absorption spectra, the scattering level due to the presence of beta-PbF(2) nanocrystals in the glass-ceramics was observed to be similar to that for the mother glasses. Detailed analysis of emission spectra and decay time measurements led to the identification of Eu(3+) ions as the beta-PbF(2) crystalline phase. Excitation spectra at 70 K show the interaction of Eu(3+) ions with the fluorogermanate network.

The evolution of the energy states of the phosphorous donor in silicon with magnetic field has been the subject of previous experimental and theoretical studies to fields of 10 T. We now present experimental optical absorption data to 18 T in combination with theoretical data to the same field. We observe features that are not revealed in the earlier work, including additional interactions and anti-crossings between the different final states. For example, according to the theory, for the "1s -> 2p (+)" transition, there are anti-crossings at about 5, 10, 14, 16, and 18 T. In the experiments, we resolve at least the 5, 10, and 14 T anti-crossings, and our data at 16 and 18 T are consistent with the calculations.

The mechanism involved in the Tm(3+)((3)F(4)) -> Tb(3+)((7)F(0,1,2)) energy transfer as a function of the Tb concentration was investigated in Tm:Tb-doped germanate (GLKZ) glass. The experimental transfer rate was determined from the best fit of the (3)F(4) luminescence decay due to the Tm -> Tb energy transfer using the Burshtein model. The result showed that the 1700 nm emission from (3)F(4) can be completely quenched by 0.8 mol% of Tb(3+). As a consequence, the (7)F(3) state of Tb(3+) interacts with the (3)H(4) upper excited state of TM(3+) slighting decreasing its population. The effective amplification coefficient beta(cm(-1)) that depends on the population density difference Delta n = n((3)H(4))-n((3)F(4)) involved in the optical transition of Tm(3+) (S-band) was calculated by solving the rate equations of the system for continuous pumping with laser at 792 nm, using the Runge-Kutta numerical method including terms of fourth order. The population density inversion An as a function of Tb(3+) concentration was calculated by computational simulation for three pumping intensities, 0.2, 2.2 and 4.4 kWcm(-2). These calculations were performed using the experimental Tm -> Tb transfer rates and the optical constants of the Tm (0.1 mol%) system. It was demonstrated that 0.2 mol% of Tb(3+) propitiates best population density inversion of Tin(3+) maximizing the amplification coefficient of Tm-doped (0.1 mol%) GLKZ glass when operating as laser intensity amplification at 1.47 mu m.
