8-Carboxymethyl-1,6-dihydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyxanthone 8-carboxymethyl-1,5,6-trihydroxy-3-methoxyxanthone and 8-carboxy-methyl-1,3,5,6-tetrahydroxyxanthone were isolated from the capitula of Leiothrix curvifolia and Leiothrix flavescens and characterized by spectroscopic methods, mainly 1D and 2D NMR experiments, as well as by electrospray mass spectrometry. Eight known flavonoids were also isolated and they were identified by 1D and 2D NMR experiments and comparison with literature data. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

Aqueous infusions of Brazilian Maytenus leaves are used as beverages, foodstuffs, and phytomedicines. Previously, we isolated two new flavonoid tetrasaccharides from the infusion of Maytenus aquifolium leaves that showed antiulcer activity. In this investigation a new flavonoid tetrasaccharide, kaempferol-3-O-alpha -L-rhamnopyranosyl (1-6)-O-[alpha -L-arabinopyranosyl (1 -->3)-O-alpha -L-rhamnopyranosyl (1-2)]-O-beta -D-galactopyranoside (3), was isolated, together with kaempferol tri- and disaccharides and quercetin trisaccharides from the aqueous infusion of Maytenus ilicifolia leaves. All structures were elucidated by ES-MS and NMR spectroscopic methods. The quantitative analysis of the flavonoid glycosides from Maytenus ilicifolia and M. aquifolium has been performed by HPLC.

Mature leaves of eight species of Xyris were prepared by standard methods for electron transmission microscopy. Wartlike intercellular pectic protuberances were observed on the surface of inner periclinal walls of epidermal cells in Xyris obcordata, Xyris hymenachne, and Xyris pterygoblephara. In the latter, the protuberances also occur on the surface of parenchymatic mesophyll cells; they frequently project into intercellular spaces and may connect opposing cells. For the genus Xyris, the intercellular pectic protuberances may be considered taxonomically significant at the species level.

The Amazon Indians Waiapi living in the West of Amapa State of Brazil, treat malaria with an inhalation of vapor obtained from leaves of Viola surinamensis. The essential oil obtained from adult and plantlet leaves was analyzed by GC/MS and 11 monoterpenes, 11 sesquiterpenes and three phenylpropanoids were identified. Plantlet essential oil caused 100% of growth inhibition after 48 h in the development of the young trophozoite to schizont stage and the sesquiterpene nerolidol (100 mu g/ml) was identified as one of the active constituents (100% of growth inhibition was obtained). In addition, examination of [(UC)-C-14]-glucose incorporation showed that activity of nerolidol is related to the inhibition of glycoprotein biosynthesis. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. Ireland Ltd. Phenylpropanoid glycosides, 1 '-O-benzyl-alpha-(L)-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 ''-> 6 ')-beta-(D)-glucopyranoside (1) and alpha-(L)-Xylopyranosyl(4 '', 2 ')-(3-O-beta-(D)-glucopyranosyl)-1 '-O-E-caffeoyl-beta-(D)-glucopyranoside (2), together with the known derivatives, 1,6-di-O-caffeoyl- beta-(D)-glucopyrano side (3), 1-O-(E)-caffeoyl-beta-(D)-glucopyranoside (4) and 1-O-(E)-feruloyl-beta-(D)-glucopyranoside (5), were isolated from leaves of Coussarea hydrangeifolia. Their structures were determined by IR, HRESIMS, and I D and 2D NMR experiments, and their antioxidant activities, evaluated by assaying the free radical scavenging capacity using the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical as substrate. The antioxidant activities of 3 and 4 (IC50 values of 15.0 and 19.2 mu M, respectively) were comparable to that of the standard positive control caffeic acid, whilst 2 and 5 were only weakly active and 1 was inactive. Lippia alba, family Verbenaceae, is widely spread in Central and South American. It's a shurb with a quadrangular branch reaching 1,7m tall. The leaves are membranaceous, petiolate, pubescent with a strong flavor. It's limbs have variable forms with pointed apex, cuneiform or decumbent base, and serrated or crenated hordes. It was determined the best harvest season to biomass production, essential oil content and chemical composition, on different plant parts (apical, medium, basal). It has been observed that, both apical and medium parts represented around 80 % of the fresh leaf mass. The foliar biomass yields are about 5 ton/ha in four harvests during an year. The average yield of essential oil considering the three plant parts were 0.15%, 0.47%, 0.46%, 0.55% and 0.61% for summer/98, autumn/98, winter/98, spring/98 and summer/99, respectively. Essential oils showed similar chemical composition either in relation to seasonality, neral, geranial and t-cariofilene were the majority compounds.

Leaves of Piper aduncum accumulate the anti-fungal chromenes methyl 2,2-dimethyl-2H-1-chromene-6-carboxylate (1) and methyl 2,2-dimethyl-8-(3'-methyl-2'-butenyl)-2H-1-chromene-6-carboxylate (2). The enzymatic formation of 2 from dimethylallyl diphosphate and I was investigated using cell-free extracts of the title plant. An HPLC assay for the prenylation reaction was developed and the enzyme activity measured in the protein extracts. The prenyltransferase that catalyses the transfer of the dimethylallyl group to C-2' of 1 was soluble and required dimethylallyl diphosphate as the prenyl donor. In the leaves, the biosynthesis of the prenylated chromene 2 was time-regulated and prenyltransferase activity depended upon circadian variation. Preliminary characterisation and purification experiments on the prenyltransferase from P. aduncum have been performed. Copyright (C) 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The essential oil from leaves of Virola surinamensis shows circadian variation in elemicin and in monoterpenes during the rainy season (February). The monoterpenes represents 50% of total volatile compounds during the dry season(June). Sesquiterpenes are predominant (50%) in the early rainy season (October). (C) 1997 Published by Elsevier B.V.
