We present recent results on frequency upconversion (UPC) obtained in fluoroindate glasses (FIG) doped with Ho3+, Tm3+ and Nd3+ ions and codoped with Pr3+/Nd3+ and Yb3+/Tb3+ ions. The results for the Ho3+-doped samples show strong evidence of energy transfer (ET) between Ho3+ ions resonantly excited at 640 nm. The origin of the blue-green upconverted fluorescence observed was identified and the dynamics of the signals revealed the pathways involved in the UPC process. In the case of Tm3+-doped FIG, the samples were resonantly excited at 650 nm and the main mechanism that contributes for the red-to-blue upconversion is excited-state absorption (ESA). The FIG samples codoped with Pr3+/Nd3+ were excited at 588 nm in resonance with transitions starting from the ground state of the Nd 3+ and the Pr3+ ions. It was observed that the presence of Nd3+ ions enhanced the Pr3+ emission at 480 nm by two orders of magnitude. Multiphonon (MP)-assisted upconversion is also discussed for Nd3+-doped FIG pumped at 866 nm. Emission at 750 nm with a peculiar linear dependence with the laser intensity was observed and explained. A rate-equation model that includes MP absorption via thermally coupled electronic excited states of Nd3+ was developed and describes well the experimental results. The role played by effective phonon modes is clearly demonstrated. MP-assisted UPC process was also studied in Yb3+/ Tb3+-codoped FIG samples excited at 1064 nm, which is off-resonance with electronic transitions starting from the ground state. It was determined that the mechanism leading to Tb3+ emission in the blue is due to ET from a pair of excited Yb3+ ions followed by ESA in the Tb 3+ ions. © 2002 Académie des sciences/Éditions scientifiques et médicales Elsevier SAS.

The nonlinear dynamic response and a nonlinear control method of a particular portal frame foundation for an unbalanced rotating machine with limited power (non-ideal motor) are examined. Numerical simulations are performed for a set of control parameters (depending on the voltage of the motor) related to the static and dynamic characteristics of the motor. The interaction of the structure with the excitation source may lead to the occurrence of interesting phenomena during the forward passage through the several resonance states of the systems. A mathematical model having two degrees of freedom simplifies the non-ideal system. The study of controlling steady-state vibrations of the non-ideal system is based on the saturation phenomenon due to internal resonance.

Optical excitation of Ce3+-doped SnO2 thin films, obtained by the sol-gel-dip-coating technique, is carried out and the effects on electrical transport are evaluated. Samples are doped with O. lat% of Ce, just above the saturation limit. The excitation is done with an intensity-controlled halogen-tungsten lamp through an interference filter, yielding an excitation wavelength of 513nm, 9 nm wide (width at half intensity peak). Irradiation at low temperature (25K) yields a conductivity increase much lower than above bandgap light. Such a behavior assures the ionization of intra-bandgap defect levels, since the filter does not allow excitation of electron-hole pairs, what would happen only in the UV range (below about 350nm). The decay of intra-bandgap excited levels in the range 250-320 K is recorded, leading to a temperature dependent behavior related to a thermally excited capture cross section for the dominating defect level. © 2008 American Institute of Physics.

In this paper, a mathematical model is derived via Lagrange's Equation for a shear building structure that acts as a foundation of a non-ideal direct current electric motor, controlled by a mass loose inside a circular carving. Non-ideal sources of vibrations of structures are those whose characteristics are coupled to the motion of the structure, not being a function of time only as in the ideal case. Thus, in this case, an additional equation of motion is written, related to the motor rotation, coupled to the equation describing the horizontal motion of the shear building. This kind of problem can lead to the so-called Sommerfeld effect: steady state frequencies of the motor will usually increase as more power (voltage) is given to it in a step-by-step fashion. When a resonance condition with the structure is reached, the better part of this energy is consumed to generate large amplitude vibrations of the foundation without sensible change of the motor frequency as before. If additional increase steps in voltage are made, one may reach a situation where the rotor will jump to higher rotation regimes, no steady states being stable in between. As a device of passive control of both large amplitude vibrations and the Sommerfeld effect, a scheme is proposed using a point mass free to bounce back and forth inside a circular carving in the suspended mass of the structure. In this paper, a combined theoretical and experimental study on the electronic structure and photoluminescence (PL) properties of beta zinc molybdate (β-ZnMoO4) microcrystals synthesized by the hydrothermal method has been employed. These crystals were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rietveld refinement, Fourier transform Raman (FT-Raman) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopies. Their optical properties were investigated by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopy and PL measurements. First-principles quantum mechanical calculations based on the density functional theory at the B3LYP level have been carried out. XRD patterns, Rietveld refinement, FT-Raman and FT-IR spectra showed that these crystals have a wolframite-type monoclinic structure. The Raman and IR frequencies experimental results are in reasonable agreement with theoretically calculated results. UV-Vis absorption measurements shows an optical band gap value of 3.17 eV, while the calculated band structure has a value of 3.22 eV. The density of states indicate that the main orbitals involved in the electronic structure of β-ZnMoO4 crystals are (O 2p-valence band and Mo 4d-conduction band). Finally, PL properties of β-ZnMoO4 crystals are explained by means of distortions effects in octahedral [ZnO6] and [MoO6] clusters and inhomogeneous electronic distribution into the lattice with the electron density map. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.
