The effect of film orientation on piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties of bismuth layered compounds deposited on platinum coated silicon substrates was investigated. Piezo-force microscopy was used to probe the local piezoelectric properties of Bi(4)Ti(3)O(12), CaBi(4)Ti(4)O(15) and SrBi(4)Ti(4)O(15) films. Our measurements on individual grains clearly reveal that the local piezoelectric properties are determined by the polarization state of the grain. A piezoelectric coefficient of 65 pm/V was attained after poling in a grain with a polar axis very close to the normal direction. The piezoelectric coefficient and the remanent polarization were larger for a-b axes oriented than for c-axis-oriented films. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.

SrBi4Ti4O15 (SBTi) thin films were obtained by the polymeric precursor method and crystallized in a domestic microwave oven. For comparison, films were also crystallized in a conventional furnace at 700 degrees C for 2 h. Structural and morphological characterization of the SBTi thin films was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), respectively. Using platinum coated silicon substrates configuration, ferroelectric properties of the films were determined with remanent\polarization P-r and a coercive field E-c of 5.1 mu C/cm(2) and 135 kV/cm for the film thermally treated in the microwave oven and 5.4 mu C/cm(2) and 85 kV/cm for the film thermally treated in conventional furnace, respectively. The films thermally treated in the conventional furnace exhibited excellent fatigue-free characteristics up to 10(10) switching cycles indicating that SBTi thin films can be a promise material for use in non-volatile memories. Structural and morphological characterization of the SBTi thin films were investigated by Xray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), respectively. Using platinum coated silicon substrates, the ferroelectric properties of the films were determined. Remanent polarization P-r and a coercive field E-c values of 5.1 mu C/cm(2) and 135 kV/cm for the film thermally treated in the microwave oven and 5.4 mu C/cm(2) and 85 kv/cm for the film thermally treated in conventional furnace were found. The films thermally treated in the conventional furnace exhibited excellent fatigue-free characteristics up to 10(10) switching cycles indicating that SBTi thin films are a promising material for use in non-volatile memories. CaBi2Nb2O9 (CBNO) thin films were deposited on platinum-coated silicon substrates by the polymeric precursor method, and were annealed in air and in an oxygen atmosphere. The structure, surface morphology and electrical properties of CBNO thin films have been investigated. The presence of an oxygen atmosphere during crystallization of the films affected the structure perfection and morphology, as well as ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties. A reduction in P-r and piezoelectric coefficient, an increase of V-c and displacement of the Curie point is evident in the films crystallized in an oxygen atmosphere. The impact of exposure to the oxygen atmosphere on the creation of defects caused by bismuth and oxygen vacancies between layers was also investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Polycrystalline Ba0.5Sr0.5(Ti0.80Sn0.20)O-3 (BST:Sn) thin films with a perovskite structure were prepared by the soft chemical method on a platinum-coated silicon substrate from spin-coating technique. The resulting thin films showed a dense structure with uniform grain size distribution. The dielectric constant of the films estimated from C-V curve is around 1134 and can be ascribed to a reduction in the oxygen vacancy concentration. The ferroelectric nature of the film indicated by butterfly-shaped C-V curves and confirmed by the hysteresis curve, showed remnant polarization of 14 mu C/cm(2) and coercive field of 74 kV/cm at frequency of 1 MHz. At the same frequency, the leakage current density at 1.0 V is equal to 1.5 x 10(-7) A/cm(2). This work clearly reveals the highly promising potential of BST:Sn for application in memory devices. PLZT thin films were prepared by a dip coating process using Pechini's method, also known as polymeric precursor method. The PLZT solution was obtained from a mixture of the individual cation solutions and the process to prepare each solution is based on metallic citrate polymerization. The viscosity of the PLZT solution was adjusted at 40 cP while the ionic concentration was adjusted at 0.1 M. PLZT solutions were deposited on silicon (100) and platinum coated silicon (100) substrates with withdrawal speed at 5 mm/min. The coated substrates were thermally treated with a heating rate of 1 degreesC/min up to 300 degreesC and 5 degreesC/min up to 650 degreesC in order to obtain homogeneous and cracks free films. The influence of oxygen flow on crystallization and morphology of PLZT (9/65/35) thin film is discussed. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. Ltd and Techna S.r.l. All rights reserved.

The film thickness dependence on the ferroelectric properties of lanthanum modified bismuth titanate Bi3.25La0.75Ti3O12 was investigated. Films with thicknesses ranging from 230 to 404 nut were grown on platinum-coated silicon substrates by the polymeric precursor method. The internal strain is strongly influenced by the film thickness. The morphology of the film changes as the number of layers increases indicating a thickness dependent grain size. The leakage current, remanent polarization and drive voltage were also affected by the film thickness. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Polycrystalline Pb-0.Sr-60(0).40TiO3 thin films with the tetragonal perovskite structure were grown on platinum-coated silicon substrates by a chemical method. Raman results reveal that A1 (1 TO) symmetry modes, also known as soft modes, persist above the phase transition 14 temperature. This is due to the high structural distortion caused by the substitution effect of Sr2+ for Pb2+ ions. In contrast, the E(1TO) symmetry mode vanishes at 498 K, characterizing the ferroelectric-paraelectric transition phase. However, the Raman spectra, as a function of temperature, reveal that the ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition may be correlated with a diffuse phase transition. The experimental data obtained from measurements of the dielectric constant as a function of temperature and frequencies showed a classical behavior of ferroelectric phase transition in Pb-0.Sr-60(0).40TiO3 thin films, rather than a relaxor ferroelectric phase transition. High Curie point CaBi2Nb2O9 thin films: A potential candidate for lead-free thin-film piezoelectrics
Resumo:
CaBi2Nb2O9 (CBNO) thin films deposited on platinum coated silicon substrates by the polymeric precursor method exhibited good structural, dielectric, and piezoelectric characteristics. Capacitance-voltage measurements indicated good ferroelectric polarization switching characteristics. Remanent polarization and drive voltage values were 4.2 mu C/cm(2) and 1.7 V for a maximum applied voltage of 10 V. The film has a piezoelectric coefficient d(33) equal to 60 pm/V, current density of 0.7 mu A/cm(2), and Curie temperature of 940 degrees C. The polar-axis-oriented CBNO is a promising candidate for use in lead-free high Curie point in ferroelectric and piezoelectric devices. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

Polycrystalline BaWO4 and PbWO4 thin films having a tetragonal scheelite structure were prepared at different temperatures. Soluble precursors such as barium carbonate, lead acetate trihydrate and tungstic acid, as starting materials, were mixed in aqueous solution. The thin films were deposited on silicon, platinum-coated silicon and quartz substrates by means of the spinning technique. The surface morphology and crystal structure of the thin films were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction, and specular reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, respectively. Nucleation stages and surface morphology evolution of thin films on silicon substrates have been studied by atomic force microscopy. XRD characterization of these films showed that BaWO4 and PbWO4 phase crystallize at 500 degreesC from an inorganic amorphous phase. FTIR spectra revealed the complete decomposition of the organic ligands at 500 degreesC and the appearance of two sharp and intense bands between 1000 and 600 cm(-1) assigned to vibrations of the antisymmetric stretches resulting from the high crystallinity of both thin films. The optical properties were also studied. It was found that BaWO4 and PbWO4 thin films have Eg = 5.78 eV and 4.20 eV, respectively, of a direct transition nature. The excellent microstructural quality and chemical homogeneity results confirmed that soft solution processing provides an inexpensive and environmentally friendly route for the preparation of BaWO4 and PbWO4 thin films. Microwave synthesis of calcium bismuth niobate thin films obtained by the polymeric precursor method
Resumo:
The crystal structure, surface morphology and electrical properties of layered perovskite calcium bismuth niobate thin films (CaBi2Nb2O9-CBN) deposited on platinum coated silicon substrates by the polymeric precursor method have been investigated. The films were crystallized in a domestic microwave and in a conventional furnace. X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy analysis confirms that the crystallinity and morphology of the films are affected by the different annealing routes. Ferroelectric properties of the films were determined with remanent polarization P-r and a drive voltage V-c of 4.2 mu C/cm(2) and 1.7 V for the film annealed in the conventional furnace and 1.0 mu C/cm(2) and 4.0 V for the film annealed in microwave furnace, respectively. A slight decay after 10(8) polarization cycles was observed for the films annealed in the microwave furnace indicating a reduction of the domain wall mobility after interaction of the microwave energy with the bottom electrode. The BBT films were prepared by a spin-coating process from the polymeric precursor method (Pechini process). In order to study the influence of the temperature on the BBT microstructure and electrical properties, the films were deposited on platinum coated silicon substrates and annealed from 700degreesC to 800degreesC for 2 hours in oxygen atmosphere. The crystallinity of the films was examined by X-ray diffraction while the surface morphology was analysed by atomic force microscope. The dielectric properties and dissipation factor of BaBi2Ta2O9 films at 1 MHz were observed. The polarization-electric field hysteresis loops revealed the ferroelectric characteristics of BaBi2Ta2O9 thin films.

We report the successful deposition of CaBi2Nb2O9 (CBN) thin films on platinum coated silicon substrates by polymeric precursor method. The CBN thin films exhibited good structural, dielectric and CBN/Pt interface characteristics. The leakage current of the capacitor structure was around 0.15 A cm(-2) at an applied electric field of 30 kV cm(-1). The capacitance-voltage measurements indicated good ferroelectric polarization switching characteristics. The typical measured small signal dielectric constant and the dissipation factor at a frequency of 100 kHz were 90 and 0.053, respectively. The remanent polarization and the drive voltage values were 4.2 C cm(-2) and 1.7 V at an applied voltage of 10 V. No significant fatigue was observed at least up to 10(8) switching cycles. Polycrystalline SrTiO3 thin films having a cubic perovskite structure were prepared at different temperatures by the polymeric precursor method on platinum-coated silicon substrate. Crystalline films with uniform composition and thickness were prepared by spin-coating and the post-deposition heat treatment was carried out at different temperatures. The film showed good structural, dielectric, and insulating properties, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs showed no occurrence of interdiffusion between the bottom electrode (platinum) and the film during post-annealing, indicating a stable interface between the SrTiO3 and the bottom electrode. The dielectric constant and dissipation factor at a frequency of 100 kHz were 250 and 0.01, respectively, for a 360 nm thick film annealed at 600 degreesC. The capacitance versus applied voltage characteristics showed that the capacitance was almost independent of the applied voltage. The I-V characteristics were ohmic in low fields and a Schottky emission and/or Poole-Frenkel emission were postulated in high fields. Room temperature leakage current density was found to be in the order of 10(-7) A/cm(2) for a 360 nm thick film in an applied electric field of about 100 kV/cm. The charge storage density of 36 fC/mum(2) was obtained in an applied electric field of about 100 kV/cm. (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.
