Spermiogenesis in scoloplacids is characterized by initial lateral development of the flagellum, nuclear rotation, medial nuclear fossa formation, complex centriolar migration, and cytoplasmic channel formation. The scoloplacid spermiogenesis is similar to those found in Diplomystidae, the most primitive siluriform family. The scoloplacid spermatozoa have all the main characteristics of introsperm. They exhibit a conic head, a symmetric midpiece, a medial flagellum, and no acrosome. The conic forward-elongated nuclei contain homogeneous chromatin. The thin extremity of the nuclei is strongly curved and along its internal face there is a well-developed membranous compartment. The centrioles are completely inside the medial nuclear fossa, perpendicular to each other and with an electron-dense material between them. In a cross view of the midpiece, the mitochondria form a ring surrounding internally the cytoplasmic channel, and in a longitudinal view they are organized in a row along it. Several elongated vesicles are distributed peripherally, mainly concentrated in the mid-piece basal region. The flagellum contains the classical axoneme (9 + 2) and has two lateral projections or fins. The spermatozoa of scoloplacids share several characteristics with those of Auchenipteridae. Since these two families are not phylogenetically related this similarity seems to be due to convergence once both families are, until now, the only known siluriform families with introsperm.

Spermiogenesis and spermatozoal structure were studied in Cichla intermedia, a primitive species of Neotropical cichlids. The analysis shows that spermiogenesis is characterized by chromatin compaction, flagellum development, nuclear rotation, nuclear fossa formation and residual cytoplasm elimination. In the spermatozoa, the head is round, the nucleus contains highly condensed filamentous clusters of chromatin and an acrosome is absent. The nuclear fossa is slightly eccentric and shows a projection that penetrates into the nuclear outline. The proximal centriole is located in the initial segment of the nuclear fossa. The midpiece and the cytoplasmic channel are long. The mitochondria, about 10 in number, are round or slightly elongated, disposed in two layers around the initial segment of the flagellum. The flagellum has a classical 9 + 2 axoneme and two lateral fins. The data available show that no characteristics of spermiogenesis or spermatozoa are exclusively found in members of the suborder Labroidei. However, three characteristics seem to be exclusively observed in Cichlidae: (1) compact filamentous clusters of chromatin; (2) slightly eccentric nuclear fossa; and, (3) number of mitochondria. The family Loricariidae with about 690 species divided into six subfamilies, is one of the world's largest fish families. Recent studies have shown the existence of several problems in the definition of natural groups in the family, which has made the characterization of the subfamilies and even of some genera quite difficult. With the main objective of contributing for a better understanding of the relationships between loricariids, cytogenetic analysis were conducted with two species of Neoplecostominae and nine species of Hypostominae that, according to morphological and molecular data, may belong to a new monophyletic unit. The results obtained showed a marked chromosomal conservation with the presence of 2n = 54 chromosomes and single interstitial Ag-NORs in all species analyzed. Considering that Neoplecostominae is the primitive sister-group of all other loricariids, with exception of Lithogeneinae, this karyotypic structure may represent the primitive condition for the family Loricariidae. The cytogenetic characteristics partaken by the species of Neoplecostominae and Hypostominae analyzed in the present study reinforce the hypothesis that the species of both these subfamilies might belong to a natural group.

Spermiogenesis in Diplomystes mesembrinus, one of the most primitive species from the Siluriformes, occurs in cysts. Differentiation of spermatids is characterized by chromatin compaction, flagellum development, nuclear fossa formation, rotation of the nucleus, and excess cytoplasm elimination. The spermatozoon head is round, the nucleus contains highly condensed chromatin clusters, the midpiece is short, the axoneme shows a 9 + 2 pattern with two discrete lateral projections, and the acrosome is absent. The nuclear fossa penetrates deeply into the nucleus, including the centriolar complex and the start of the axoneme. The single large C-shaped mitochondrion sur rounds the: initial segment of the axoneme. The structural features of D. mesembrinus spermatozoon are similar to the Clupeiformes. O presente estudo descreve, por meio de técnicas de histologia e ultramorfologia, os padrões morfológico e estrutural das glândulas hipofaríngeas de Polistes versicolor (Olivier), comparando-os aos de outros grupos de Hymenoptera. Além disso, analisa a presença de variações intraespecíficas dessas glândulas por meio de análises morfométricas das células secretoras de vespas em diferentes idades. Na espécie estudada foi constatada a presença de glândulas com características primitivas, possuindo células secretoras que desembocam individualmente na placa hipofaríngea. O padrão morfológico encontrado nas glândulas hipofaríngeas foi basicamente o mesmo para todas as vespas estudadas, entretanto o comprimento das células glandulares apresentou variações significativas entre indivíduos. Aparentemente essas variações não estão relacionadas com a idade.

The phylogeny of Celastraceae subfamily Salacioideae (ca. 255 species in the Old and New World tropics) and tribe Lophopetaleae (ca. 29 species in southern Asia and the Austral-Pacific) was inferred using morphological characters together with plastid (matK, trnL-F) and nuclear (ITS and 26S rDNA) genes. Brassiantha, a monotypic genus endemic to New Guinea, is inferred to be more closely related to the clade of Dicarpellum (New Caledonia) and Hypsophila (Queensland, Australia) than it is to Hippocrateoideae or Salacioideae. This unambiguously supported resolution indicates that a nectary disk positioned outside the stamens has been convergently derived in these two lineages. The clade of Kokoona and Lophopetalum is resolved as more closely related to Breria and Elaeodendron than it is to Hippocrateoideae or Salacioideae. Sarawakodendron, a monotypic genus endemic to Borneo, is resolved as sister to Salacioideae. Salacioideae are inferred to have an Old World origin that was followed by a single successful radiation within Central and South America. We infer that capsular fruits are primitive within the clade of Hippocrateoideae + Sarawakodendron + Salacioideae, with berries a synapomorphy for Salacioideae. Based on the resolution of Sarawakodendron as sister to Salacioideae, we hypothesize that the filaments of Sarawakodendron arils are homologous to the spiral filaments in the mucilagenous pulp of Salacioideae.

We study the use of para-orthogonal polynomials in solving the frequency analysis problem. Through a transformation of Delsarte and Genin, we present an approach for the frequency analysis by using the zeros and Christoffel numbers of polynomials orthogonal on the real line. This leads to a simple and fast algorithm for the estimation of frequencies. We also provide a new method, faster than the Levinson algorithm, for the determination of the reflection coefficients of the corresponding real Szego polynomials from the given moments.

Denote by x(nk)(alpha, beta), k = 1...., n, the zeros of the Jacobi polynornial P-n((alpha,beta)) (x). It is well known that x(nk)(alpha, beta) are increasing functions of beta and decreasing functions of alpha. In this paper we investigate the question of how fast the functions 1 - x(nk)(alpha, beta) decrease as beta increases. We prove that the products t(nk)(alpha, beta) := f(n)(alpha, beta) (1 - x(nk)(alpha, beta), where f(n)(alpha, beta) = 2n(2) + 2n(alpha + beta + 1) + (alpha + 1)(beta + 1) are already increasing functions of beta and that, for any fixed alpha > - 1, f(n)(alpha, beta) is the asymptotically extremal, with respect to n, function of beta that forces the products t(nk)(alpha, beta) to increase.
