Yttrium-aluminum oxides are interesting compounds and they have been extensively used as host for lasers and phosphors, due to their stable physical and chemical properties. The fabrication of yttrium-aluminum garnet (YAG) has been investigated thoroughly. Single-crystal YAG is expensive and to produce it a new way has been investigated. This process consists of modifying the methodology of reagents mixture and the process of heating them. The microwave irradiation is used to heat-treat the oxide mixture. The traditional synthesis of YAG powders occurs through the reaction of aluminum and yttrium powders at high temperatures. With this work we investigated the preparation of YAG by non-hydrolytic sol-gel route as an alternative methodology to obtain yttrium-aluminum matrix from inorganic precursors (yttrium and aluminum chloride). The preparation of the gel was carried out in an oven-dried glassware. The AlCl3, YCl3 and ethanol were reacted in reflux under argon atmosphere. Europium III chloride was added as a structural probe. The powder was dried and heat-treated in modified microwaves. The samples were pre-treated at 50 and 800 C during I h and then heated in microwaves for 30 s, 2 and 4 min. The formation process and structure of the powders were studied by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence (PL) and transmission electronic microscopy (TEM). XRD presents only picks corresponding to the YAG phase and confirmed by TEM. PL date showed that the YAG phase was formed in 2 min with the samples pre-treated at 50 C. For the samples pretreated at 800 degrees C, the YAG phase appears in 30s. The excitation spectra present a maximum of 394 nm corresponding to the L-5(6) level and emission spectra of Eu III ion present bands characteristic transitions arising from the D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J= 1, 2, 3, 4) monifolds excited at their maximum. The magnetic dipole D-5(0) -> F-7(1) transition presents more intensity than the electric dipole D-5(0) -> F-7(2) transition. This methodology showed efficiency in obtaining YAG phase. Ferroelectric SrBi2Nb2O9 (SBN) thin films were prepared by the polymeric precursors method and deposited by spin coating onto Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrate and crystallized using a domestic microwave oven. It was studied the influence of the heat flux direction and the duration of the thermal treatment on the films crystallization. An element with high dielectric loss, a SiC susceptor, was used to absorb the microwave energy and transfers the heat to the film. Influence of the susceptor position to the sample crystallization was verified, the susceptor was, placed or below the substrate or above the film. The SBN perovskite phase was observed after a thermal treatment at 700 degreesC for 10 min when the susceptor was placed below the substrate and for 30 min when the susceptor was placed above the film. Electrical measurements revealed that the film crystallized at 700 degreesC for 10 min, with the susceptor placed below the film, presented dielectric constant, dielectric loss, remanent polarization and coercive field of, 67, 0.011, 4.2 muC/cm(2) and 27.5 kV/cm, respectively. When the films were crystallized at 700 degreesC for 30 min, with the susceptor placed above the film, the dielectric constant was 115 and the dissipation factor was around of 0.033, remanent polarization and coercive field were 10.8 muC/cm(2) and 170 kV/cm, respectively. PbZr0.3Ti0.7O3 (PZT) films were produced by polymeric precursor route and deposited by spin-coater technique on Pt(111)/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) substrates. The films were heat-treated using different furnaces: (a) a conventional furnace, at 700 degrees C; and (b) a domestic microwave oven, at 600 degrees C. The X-ray patterns revealed that both films are single phase and reflections were identified as belongs to the PZT phase. The intensity of these reflections showed a (111), (001) and (100) preferred orientation. Morphological and electrical characterizations showed that all samples present a rather different microstructure and both with high spontaneous polarization.

Lanthanum doped bismuth titanate thin films (Bi3.25La0.75Ti3O12-BLT) were produced by the polymeric precursor method and crystallized in a domestic microwave oven and in conventional furnace. Using platinum coated silicon substrates configuration, ferroelectric properties of the films were determined with remanent polarization P-r and a coercive field E-c of 3.9 mu C/cm(2) and 70 kV/cm for the film annealed in the microwave oven and 20 mu C/cm(2) and 52 kV/cm for the film annealed in conventional furnace, respectively. The films annealed in conventional furnace exhibited excellent retention-free characteristics at low infant periods indicating that BLT thin films can be a promise material for use in nonvolatile memories. on the other hand, the pinning of domains wall causes a strong decay at low infant periods for the films annealed in the microwave furnace which makes undesireable the application for future FeRAMS memories. Statement of problem. Microwave postpolymerization has been Suggested as a method to improve the mechanical strength of repaired denture base materials. However, the effect of microwave heating oil the flexural strength of the autopolymerizing denture reline resins has not been investigated.Purpose. This study analyzed the effect of microwave postpolymerization on the flexural strength of 4 autopolymerizing reline resins (Duraliner II, Kooliner, Ufi Gel Hard, and Tokuso Rebase Fast) and 1 heat-polymerized resin (Lucitone 550).Material and methods. For each material, 80 specimens (64 X 10 X 3.3 mm) were polymerized according to the manufacturer's instructions and divided into 10 groups (n = 8). Control group specimens remained as processed. Before testing, the specimens were Subjected to postpolymerization in a microwave oven using different power (500, 5,50, or 650 W) and time (3, 4, or 5 Minutes) settings. Load measurements (newtons) were made at a crosshead speed of 5 mm/min using a 3-point bending device with a span of 50 mill. The flexural strength values were calculated in MPa. Data analyses included 3-way and 2-way analysis of variance and the Tukey Honestly Significant Difference test (alpha=.05).Results. The flexural strengths of resins Duraliner 11 and Kooliner were significantly increased (P=.0015 and P=.0046, respectively) with the application of microwave irradiation using different time/power combinations. The materials Lucitone 550, Tokuso Rebase Fast, and Ufi Gel Hard demonstrated no significant strength improvement compared to the corresponding control. Only after microwave postpolymerization irradiation for 3 minutes at 550 W did Lucitione 550 show significantly higher flexural strength than Tokuso Rebase Fast and Ufi Gel Hard relining resins.Conclusion. Microwave postpolymerization irradiation can be an effective method for increasing the flexural strength of Duraliner II (at 650 W) and Kooliner (at 550 W and 650 W for 5 minutes).

A new and fast procedure is proposed for cleaning autosampler cups using acid-vapor steam-cleaning with a miniaturized assembly in a microwave-heated sealed Teflon vessel. A glass cactus-shaped holder was made to support six polyethylene autosampler cups (volume, 2.0 mt) inside a 100 mt microwave vessel. Regent-grade nitric acid was added to the vessels, and the system was heated in a microwave oven for 5 min at 300 W. Chromium was determined by graphite-furnace atomic-absorption spectrophotometry. The blank values were lower with cleaned cups compared to untreated cups (i.e., as received from supplier). The quantification limits, estimated from detection limits established with Milli-Q water, were 0.66 and 0.95 mu g Cr L-1 for cleaned and untreated auto-sampler cups, respectively. SrBi2Ta2O9 thin films, produced by the polymeric precursor method, were crystallized at low temperature using a domestic microwave oven. A SiC susceptor were used to absorb the microwave energy and rapidly transfer the heat to the film. Low microwave power and short time have been used. The films thus obtained are crack-free, well-adhered, and fully crystallized, even when treated at 600 degreesC for 10 min. The microstructure displayed a polycrystalline nature with an elongate grain size comparable to the films obtained by the conventional treatment. The dielectric constant values are 240, 159 and 67, for the films treated at 600 degreesC, 650 degreesC and 700 degreesC, respectively, when the films are placed directly on the SiC susceptor. Electrical measurements revealed that the increase of the temperature treatment to 700 degreesC causes a complete loss of ferroelectricity due to degradation of the bottom interface. A 4 nun-ceramic wool put between the susceptor and the substrate minimizes the interface degradation leading to a dielectric constant, a dielectric loss, and a remnant polarization (2P(r)) of 181 muC/cm(2), 0.032 muC/cm(2), and 12.8 muC/cm(2), respectively, for a film treated at 750 degreesC for 20 min. The crystal structure, surface morphology and electrical properties of layered perovskite calcium bismuth niobate thin films (CaBi2Nb2O9-CBN) deposited on platinum coated silicon substrates by the polymeric precursor method have been investigated. The films were crystallized in a domestic microwave and in a conventional furnace. X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy analysis confirms that the crystallinity and morphology of the films are affected by the different annealing routes. Ferroelectric properties of the films were determined with remanent polarization P-r and a drive voltage V-c of 4.2 mu C/cm(2) and 1.7 V for the film annealed in the conventional furnace and 1.0 mu C/cm(2) and 4.0 V for the film annealed in microwave furnace, respectively. A slight decay after 10(8) polarization cycles was observed for the films annealed in the microwave furnace indicating a reduction of the domain wall mobility after interaction of the microwave energy with the bottom electrode. Statement of problem. Acrylic resin denture teeth soften upon immersion in water, and the heating generated during microwave sterilization may enhance this process.Purpose. Six brands of acrylic resin denture teeth were investigated with respect to the effect of microwave sterilization and water immersion on Vickers hardness (VHN).Material and Methods. The acrylic resin denture teeth (Dentron [D], Vipi Dent Plus [V], Postaris [P], Biolux [B], Trilux [T], and Artiplus [A]) were embedded in heat-polymerized acrylic resin within polyvinylchloride tubes. For each brand, the occlusal surfaces of 32 identical acrylic resin denture posterior teeth were ground flat with 1500-grit silicon carbide paper and polished on a wet polishing wheel with a slurry of tin oxide. Hardness tests were performed after polishing (control group, C) after polishing followed by 2 cycles of microwave sterilization at 650 W for 6 minutes (MwS group), after polishing followed by 90-day immersion in water (90-day Wim group), and after polishing followed by 90-day storage in water and 2 cycles of microwave sterilization (90-day Wim + MwS group). For each specimen, 8 hardness measurements were made and the mean was calculated. Data were analyzed with a 2-way analysis of variance followed by the Bonferroni procedure to determine any significance between pairs of mean values (alpha=.01).Results: Mircrowave sterilization of specimens significantly decreased (P <.001) the hardness of the acrylic resin denture tooth specimens P (17.8 to 16.6 VHN, V (18.3 to 15.8 VHN), T (17.4 to 15.3 VHN), B (16.8 to 15.7 VHN), and A (17.3 to 15.7 VHN). For all acrylic resin denture teeth, no significant differences in hardness were found between the groups Mws, 90-day Wim, and 90-day Wim + MwS, with the exception of the 90-day Wim + MwS tooth A specimens (14.4 VHN), which demonstrated significant lower mean values (P <.001) than the 90-day Wim (15.8 VHN) and MwS (15.7 VHN) specimens.Conclusions. For specimens immersed in water for 90 days, 2 cycles of microwave sterilization had no effect on the hardness of most of the acrylic resin denture teeth.

Some synthetic metals show in addition to good conductivity, high microwave dielectric constants. In this work, it is shown how conduction-electron spin resonance(CESR) lineshape can be affected by these high constants. The conditions for avoiding these effects in the CESR measurements are discussed as well as a method for extracting microwave dielectric constants from CESR lines. (C) 1995 Academic Press, Inc.
