This study evaluated the effects of mechanical and thermal cycling on the flexural strength (ISO 9693) of three brands of ceramics fused to commercially pure titanium (cpTi). Metallic frameworks of 25 x 3 x 0.5 mm dimensions (N = 84) were cast in cpTi, followed by 150-mu m aluminum oxide airborne particle abrasion at a designated area of the frameworks (8 x 3 mm). Bonder and opaque ceramic were applied on the frameworks, and then the corresponding ceramic (Triceram, Super Porcelain Ti-22, Vita Titankeramik) was fired onto them (thickness: 1 mm). Half of the specimens from each ceramic-metal combination were randomly tested without aging (only water storage at 37 degrees C for 24 hours), while the other half were mechanically loaded (20,000 cycles under 10 N load, immersion in distilled water at 37 degrees C) and thermocycled (3,000 cycles, between 5-55 degrees C, dwell time of 13 seconds). After the flexural strength test, failure types were noted. Mechanical and thermal cycling decreased the mean flexural strength values significantly (p<0.05) for all the three ceramic-cpTi combinations tested when compared to the control group. In all the three groups, failure type was exclusively adhesive at the opaque ceramic-cpTi interfacial zone with no presence of ceramic on the substrate surface except for a visible oxide layer.

Objective: A restorative material for Class III cavities must, besides being functional, be esthetically satisfactory, providing good working conditions and several shade and color options. A clinical evaluation was initiated to compare the suitability of resin composite and glass-ionomer cement materials for such restorations.Method and materials: Forty-two Class III conservative cavities, esthetically important because of facial extensions, were selected. Resin composite restorations were placed in 21 cavities, and the remaining 21 were restored with glass-ionomer cement. The following characteristics were studied: color or-esthetics, anatomic shape, surface texture, staining, marginal infiltration, dental plaque retention, and occurrence of fracture. After 24 months, the restorations were evaluated. Results: the only statistically significant difference between the resin composite and glass-ionomer cement restorations in the experimental period involved color or esthetics. Conclusion: Resin composites and glass-ionomer materials provide excellent functional and esthetic results in Class III cavities when properly indicated.

The aim of this paper is to compare the fluoride-releasing and mechanical properties of an experimental luting glass ionomer cement, which has a modified composition and a commercial luting cement. The experimental powder was obtained by sol-gel process and then, it was used to prepare the experimental cements. The properties of cement pastes, such as setting time and working time, microhardness and diametral tensile strength were determined. Fluoride release from GICs was evaluated at time intervals of 1, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days in deionized water. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses showed that the surface of the experimental cements is more homogeneous than commercial GICs. The mechanical properties and the measure of liberation of fluoride of the two cements were influenced by ratio powder:liquid and chemical composition of the precursor powders. Experimental cements released less fluoride than commercial cements. However, this liberation was more constant during the analyzed period. Thus, the results obtained in this study indicated that the composition of the experimental powder modified by the niobium can lead the formation of the polysalt matrix with good mechanical properties. In other words, we can say that experimental powder offered considerable promise for exploitation in dental field.

The primary excited state absorption processes relating to the (5)I(6) -> (5)I(7) 3 mu m laser transition in singly Ho(3+)-doped fluoride glass have been investigated in detail using time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. Selective laser excitation of the (5)I(6) and (5)I(7) energy levels established the occurrence of two excited state absorption transitions from these energy levels that compete with previously described energy transfer upconversion processes. The (5)I(7) -> (5)I(4) excited state absorption transition has peak cross sections at 1216 nm (sigma(esa)=2.8x10(-21) cm(2)), 1174 nm (sigma(esa)=1x10(-21) cm(2)), and 1134 nm (sigma(esa)=7.4x10(-22) cm(2)) which have a strong overlap with the (5)I(8) -> (5)I(6) ground state absorption. on the other hand, it was established that the excited state absorption transition (5)I(6) -> (5)S(2) had a weak overlap with ground state absorption. Using numerical solution of the rate equations, we show that Ho(3+)-doped fluoride fiber lasers employing pumping at 1100 nm rely on excited state absorption from the lowest excited state of Ho(3+) to maintain a population inversion and that energy transfer upconversion processes compete detrimentally with the excited state absorption processes in concentrated Ho(3+)-doped fluoride glass. We report photoinduced photo-darkening in SbPO4-WO3 glass by exposure to 532 nm light with a power density of 143 mW/cm(2). The time of exposure was varied between 0 and 256 min following which visible photo-darkening, peaking at 850 nm was observed. Spectrophotometer measurement of absorption was performed for both treated and untreated regions of the sample. Time exposure to below band-gap light results in a single exponent Gaussian absorption function over an exceptionally wide range of wavelengths (500 nm-1600 nm), with a 1/e width of 647.5 nm. Kramers-Kronig transform of the change in the absorption indicates a negative local change in the refractive index. The dispersed refractive index change at 1550 nm, Delta n, is calculated to be similar to -5 x 10(-8). The peak absorption increases with time of exposure and the photo-darkening remains irreversible at room temperature. Crown Copyright (C) 2010 Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Thin films were prepared using glass precursors obtained in the ternary system NaPO(3)-BaF(2)-WO(3) and the binary system NaPO(3)-WO(3) with high concentrations of WO(3) (above 40% molar). Vitreous samples have been used as a target to prepare thin films. Such films were deposited using the electron beam evaporation method onto soda-lime glass substrates. Several structural characterizations were performed by Raman spectroscopy and X-ray Absorption Near Edge Spectroscopy (XANES) at the tungsten L(I) and L(III) absorption edges. XANES investigations showed that tungsten atoms are only sixfold coordinated (octahedral WO(6)) and that these films are free of tungstate tetrahedral units (WO(4)). In addition, Raman spectroscopy allowed identifying a break in the linear phosphate chains as the amount of WO(3) increases and the formation of P-O-W bonds in the films network indicating the intermediary behavior of WO(6) octahedra in the film network. Based on XANES data, we suggested a new attribution of several Raman absorption bands which allowed identifying the presence of W-O and W=O terminal bonds and a progressive apparition of W-O-W bridging bonds for the most WO(3) concentrated samples (above 40% molar) attributed to the formation of WO(6) clusters. Transparent glass ceramics have been prepared in the Ga2S3-GeS2-CsCI pseudoternary system appropriate heat treatment time and temperature. In situ X-ray diffraction at the heat treatment temperature and Cs-133 and Ga-71 solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance have been performed in function of annealing time to understand the crystallization process. Both techniques have evidenced the nucleating agent role played by gallium with the formation of Ga2S3 nanocrystals. on the other hand, cesium is incorporated very much later into the crystallites during the ceramization. Moreover, the addition of CsCl, which is readily integrated into the glassy network, permits us to shift the optical band gap toward shorter wavelength. Thus, new glass ceramics transmitting in the whole visible range up to 11.5 mu m have been Successfully synthesized from the (Ga2S3)(35)-(GeS2)(25)-CsCl40 base glass composition.
