Relationship between dog culling and incidence of human visceral leishmaniasis in an endemic area

Domestic dogs are the main reservoirs of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in urban areas; one of the control measures adopted in Brazil is the elimination of this reservoir. In order to test the relationship between the euthanasia rate of the canine reservoir and the incidence of the disease in humans, data on dog culling from the Centre for Zoonosis Control of Aracatuba, São Paulo, Brazil, during the period from 1999 to 2008 and visceral leishmaniasis human cases registered in the same period were analyzed. Reduction of human VL incidence was statistically correlated to dog euthanasia rate (P=0.0211; r(2)=0.616) when it was analyzed for the period of two years after application of this measure. Synthesis and Photoluminescence Behavior of the Eu3+ Ions as a Nanocoating over a Silica Stober Matrix

In this work, a SiO2 spherical were prepared by the Stober Method and then recovered with a single layer of Eu2O3 oxide (SiO2@Eu2O3) obtained by the Polymeric Precursor Method. The SiO2@Eu2O3 powder was heated treated at 100, 300, 400, 500 and 800 A degrees C. The samples were characterized by the Scanning Electonic Microscopy (SEM), Thermal Analysis (TGA/DTA), and the luminescent properties of the SiO2@Eu2O3 powders were studied by their emission and excitation spectra as well as by the lifetime measurements of the Eu3+ D-5(0) -> aEuro parts per thousand F-7(2) transition. The SEM analysis shows that the silica prepared by the Stober Method is spherical with a particle size of 460 nm. The emission spectra of the SiO2@Eu2O3 powders presented the Eu3+ characteristics bands related to the D-5(0) -> aEuro parts per thousand F-7(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) transitions at 577, 591, 616, 649 and 695 nm, respectively. The band related to the D-5(0) -> aEuro parts per thousand F-7(2) transition is the most intense in the spectra, and its intensity decreases with the temperature enhancement. The decay curves of the SiO2@Eu2O3 samples presented monoexponential features, and the obtained lifetime values were higher than the Eu2O3 oxide. It was possible to conclude that the D-5(0) -> aEuro parts per thousand F-7(2) hypersensitive transition is strongly dependent on the Eu3+ surrounding.

Methyl- and phenylmercury(II) derivatives of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole. Crystal structure of (2-mercaptobenzothiazolato)methylmercury(II)

The complexes MeHgL and PhHgL (HL = 2-mercaptobenzothiazole) have been obtained from the reaction of the ligand with methylmercury hydroxide and phenylmercury acetate, respectively, in methanol. MeHgL, which has been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis (crystal data: triclinic, space group P1, with a = 8.009 (4) Å, b = 10.042 (4) Å, c = 13.074 (3) Å, α = 101.25 (2)°, β = 102.61(3)°, γ = 101.42 (3)°, R = 0.067), crystallizes with two independent molecules, I and I′, contained in each asymmetric unit with a coordination geometry based on the almost linear C-Hg-S group (Hg-S = 2.369 (6) Å, Hg-C = 2.06 (2) Å, and C-Hg-S = 177.7 (7)° for I; Hg-S = 2.375 (6) Å, Hg-C = 2.10 (3) Å, and C-Hg-S = 178.8 (6)° for I′). A secondary intramolecular interaction between the mercury atom and the C=N group of the ring and some weak intermolecular interactions between the metal and sulfur atoms were also found. The vibrational spectra of this compound and the phenylmercury(II) compound are discussed in light of the crystal structure. Diagnostic criteria of the bonding modes for the ligand are assessed. © 1985 American Chemical Society.

One loop conformal invariance of the superstring in an AdS5 × S5 background

Electrocatalytic and voltammetric determination of sulfhydryl compounds through iron nitroprusside modified graphite paste electrode

Iron nitroprusside Fe(II)NP was incorporated into a carbon paste electrode and the electrochemical studies were performed with cyclic voltammetry. The cyclic voltammogram of Fe(II)NP exhibits two redox couple with formal potential (E0')1 = 0.24 e (E0')2 = 0.85 V vs SCE attributed to Fe(II)/Fe(II) and Fe (II)(CN)5NO/Fe(III)(CN)5NO, respectively. The redox couple with (E0')2 = 0.85 V presents an electrocatalytic response for sulfhydryl compounds. The electrocatalytic oxidation of sulfhydryl compounds by the mediator has been used for the determination of L-cysteine and N-acetylcysteine. The modified graphite paste electrode gives a linear range from 9.2 x 10-4-2.0 x 10-2;; 9.6 x 10-4-1.4 x 10-2mol L-1 for the determination of L-cysteine and N-acetylcysteine, respectively, with detection limit of 1.9 x 10-4 mol L-1;; 1.5 x 10 -4 mol L-1 and relative standard desviations ± 5% and 1.5 x 10-3 mol L-1 ± 4% (n=3). The amperometric sensitivities are 0.024 and 0.027 μA/μmol L-1 for L-cysteine and N-acetylcysteine, respectively. The application of this electrode was tested and a commercial pharmaceutical product (Fluimucil) has been determined.

Effectiveness of Microwave Sterilization on Three Hard Chairside Reline Resins

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of microwave irradiation sterilization on hard chairside reline resins. Materials and Methods: Specimens of three reline resins (Kooliner, Tokuso Rebase, and Ufi Gel Hard) were fabricated and subjected to ethylene oxide sterilization. The specimens were then individually inoculated (107 cfu/mL) with Tryptic Soy Broth media containing one of the tested microorganisms (C albicans, S aureus, B subtilis, and P aeruginosa). After 48 hours at 37°C, the samples were vortexed for 1 minute and allowed to stand for 9 minutes, followed by a short vortex to resuspend any organisms present. After inoculation, 40 specimens of each material were immersed in 200 mL of water and subjected to microwave irradiation at 650 W for 6 minutes. Forty non-irradiated specimens were used as positive controls. Replicate specimens (25 μL) of suspension were plated at dilutions of 10-3 to 10-6 on plates of selective media appropriate for each organism. All plates were incubated at 37°C for 48 hours. After incubation, colonies were counted, and the data were statistically analyzed by the Kruskal-Wallis test. Twelve specimens of each material were prepared for SEM. Results: All immersed specimens showed consistent sterilization of all the individual organisms after microwave irradiation. SEM examination indicated an alteration in cell morphology after microwave irradiation. Conclusion: Microwave sterilization for 6 minutes at 650 W proved to be effective for the sterilization of hard chairside reline resins.

O limiar de esforço percebido (LEP) corresponde à potência crítica e a um indicador de máximo estado estável de consumo de oxigěnio

The perceived exertion has been a target of several investigations, many times with association with objective physiological indicators in exercise. Recently, the identification of the perceived exertion threshold (PET) was proposed in the water running, which presented no difference in relation to the critical velocity. Theoretically, both parameters would be indicators of the maximum steady state of variables such as V̇O2 and blood lactate. The objective of this work was to verify the coincidence between PET, critical power (PCrit) and an indicator of maximum V̇O2 steady state (PCrit') in cycle ergometer. Eight male participants were submitted to progressive effort test in order to determine V̇O2peak (46.7 ± 8.5 ml/kg/min) and to four rectangular tests until exhaustion for the estimation of the critical power model parameters, PET and PCrit'. The hyperbolic relation between mechanical power and time spent for the V̇O2peak to be reached in each test was used for the PCrit' estimation, considered as the asymptote in the power axis, and the portion of the anaerobic work capacity (CTAnaer) depleted up to the establishment of the V̇O2peak (CTAnaer'). In order to identify PET, the straight lines angular coefficients of the perceived exertion in time (ordinate) and the powers used (abscissa) were adjusted to a linear function that provided a point in the power axis in which the perceived exertion would be kept indefinitely stable. The parameters PCrit and CTAnaer were estimated by means of the power-time non-linear equation. In order to compare the estimations of PET, PCrit and PCrit', the analysis of variance ANOVA for repeated measurements was employed, and the associations were established through the Pearson correlation. CTAnaer and CTAnaer' were compared through the t test. PET (180 W ± 61 W), PCrit (174 W ± 43 W) and PCrit' (176 W ± 48 W) were not significantly different and the correlations were of 0.92-0.98. CTAnaer' (14,080 ± 5,219 J) was lower than CTAnaer (22,093 ± 9,042 J). One concludes that the PET predicts the intensity of PCrit and PCrit' with accuracy.

Hydrolases in the hypopharyngeal glands of workers of Scaptotrigona postica and Apis mellifera (Hymenoptera, Apinae)

Hydrolytic enzymes from hypopharyngeal gland extracts of newly emerged, nurse and foraging workers of two eusocial bees, Scaptotrigona postica, a native Brazilian stingless bee, and the Africanized honey bee (Apis mellifera) in Brazil, were compared. The hypopharyngeal gland is rich in enzymes in both species. Fifteen different enzymes were found in the extracts, with only a few quantitative differences between the species. Some of the enzymes present in the extracts may have intracellular functions, while others seem to be digestive enzymes. Scaptotrigona postica, had lower β-glucosidase and higher lipase esterase activities than A. mellifera. The differences may be due to different feeding habits and behavioral peculiarities of the two species. ©FUNPEC-RP.

Genetic population data from Araraquara region (SP State, Brazil) using PowerPlex® 16 Systems

In the present study, allele frequency distributions for the 15 STR loci included in the PowerPlex® 16 Systems (Promega) were obtained from a sample of 55 unrelated individuals living in Araraquara region (SP, Brazil). The frequency of each allele for each locus tested, the exact test and the forensic and paternity parameters were calculated using POWERSTATS ver. 1.2 (Promega) and GENEPOP ver. 3.2 software. All loci are in the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium and they reached a combined power discrimination of 0.999999999999999973 and combined power exclusion of 0.99999987, showing to be a powerful tool for paternity testing and individual identification in the population analyzed. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. One-loop conformal invariance of the type II pure spinor superstring in a curved background

We compute the one-loop beta functions for the Type II superstring using the pure spinor formalism in a generic supergravity background. It is known that the classical pure spinor BRST symmetry puts the background fields on-shell. In this paper we show that the one-loop beta functions vanish as a consequence of the classical BRST symmetry of the action. © SISSA 2007.
