Water-dispersed magnetite nanoparticle synthesis from iron(II) chloride in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-water solution at different DMSO-water ratios in alkaline medium was reported. TEM and XRD results suggest a single-crystal formation with mean particle size in the range 4-27 nm. Magnetic nanoparticles are formed by the oxidative hydrolysis reaction from green rust species that leads to FeOOH formation, followed by autocatalysis of the adsorbed available Fe(II) on the FeOOH surfaces. The available hydroxyl groups seem to be dependent on the DMSO-water ratio due to strong molecular interactions presented by the solvent mixture. Goethite phase on the magnetite surface was observed by XRD data only for sample synthesized in the absence of DMSO. In addition, cyclic voltammetry with carbon paste electroactive electrode (CV-CPEE) results reveal two reduction peaks near 0 and +400 mV associated with the presence of iron(III) in different chemical environments related to the surface composition of magnetite nanoparticles. The peak near +400 mV is related to a passivate thin layer surface such as goethite on the magnetite nanoparticle, assigned to the intensive hydrolysis reaction due to strong interactions between DMSO-water molecules in the initial solvent mixture that result in a hydroxyl group excess in the medium. Pure magnetite phase was only observed in the samples prepared at 30% (30W) and 80% (80W) water in DMSO in agreement with the structured molecular solvent cluster formation. The goethite phase present on the, magnetite nanoparticle surface like a thin passivate layer only was detectable using CV-CPEE, which is a very efficient, cheap, and powerful tool for surface characterization, and it is able to determine the passivate oxyhydroxide or oxide thin layer presence on the nanoparticle surface.

Bornite electrodes were characterized in the absence or in the presence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, which is an important microorganism involved in metal bioleaching processes. The presence of the bacterium modified the mineral/electrolyte interface, increasing the corrosion rate, as revealed by interferometric, AEM, ICP and EIS analyses. As a consequence of bacterial activity the electrode became porous, increasing its surface heterogeneity. This behavior was correlated with the evolution of impedance diagrams obtained during the time course of experiments. The main difference in these diagrams was the presence of an inductive feature (up to 44 h), which was related to bacterial action on the mineral dissolution, better than to its adhesion on the bornite. The total real impedance measured in presence of the bacterium was about 10 times lower than in its absence, due to the acceleration of the mineral dissolution, because an oxidant environment was maintained.

The electrodeposition of manganese oxide films onto a platinum substrate was investigated by means of in situ ellipsometry. In the thickness range from 0 to 150 nm, the anodic oxide behaves as an Isotropic single layer with optical constants that are independent of thickness. Deviations at higher thickness are explained in terms of anisotropic properties of the film. The electroreduction of thin films (up to ca. 150 nm) in an alkaline electrolyte leads to a decrease in both the refractive index and the extinction coefficient and is accompanied by a thickness increase of ca. 10%. The Mn(IV) to Mn(III) conversion takes place from the oxide/electrolyte interface inwards. © 2004 The Electrochemical Society. All rights reserved.

This work presents studies of GeO2-PbO thin films deposited by RF Sputtering for fabrication of rib-waveguide. GeO2-PbO vitreous targets were prepared melting the reagents in alumina crucible. Thin films were deposited at room temperature using pure Ar plasma, at 5 mTorr pressure and RF power of 40 W on substrates of (100) silicon wafers. Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy (RBS) analyses were employed for the determination of the chemical elements present in the GeO2-PbO film. Geometry and sidewall of the waveguides were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The mode propagation in the waveguide structure of GeO2-PbO thin films was analyzed using an integrated optic simulation software to obtain a monomode propagation. © The Electrochemical Society.

This work describes the characterization of the [Mn2 IV,IVO2(terpy)2(H2O)2]4+ complex in aqueous solution by UV-vis spectrophotometry, cyclic voltammetry, and linear sweep voltammetry with a rotating disk electrode. The pH effect, potential scan rate, effect of perfluorosulfonate polymer, and anion of supporting electrode on the electrochemical behavior of the modified electrode for better performance were investigated. The potential peak of the modified electrode was linearly dependent upon the ratio [ionic charge]/[ionic radius]. The modified electrode exerted an electrocatalytic effect on dopamine oxidation in aqueous solution with a decrease in the overpotential compared with the unmodified glassy carbon electrode. This way, the modified electrode showed an enzymatic biomimicking behavior. Tafel plot analyses were used to elucidate the kinetics and mechanism of dopamine oxidation. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

A novel composite formed by interaction of a octa(3-chloropropyl)octasilsesquioxane modified with Purpald®, and its subsequent reaction with silver and hexacyanoferrate (III) (AgHSP), was synthesized and initially characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) and cyclic voltammetry. The cyclic voltammogram of the modified graphite paste electrode with AgHSP, showed one redox couple with formal potential Eθ'=0.64V (vs Ag/AgCl, KNO3, 1.0 mol L-1; v = 20 mV s-1), attributed to the Fe2+(CN)6/ Fe3+(CN)6 process. The redox couple presents an electrocatalytic response for determination of sulfite. The modified electrode showed a linear response from 7.0×10-5 to 1.0×10-3 mol L-1 with the corresponding equation Y(μA) = 18.05 + 29.983×103 [sulfite], and a correlation coefficient of r=0.999. The method showed a detection limit of 0.115×10-4 mol L-1 with a relative standard deviation of ± 4% (n = 3) and amperometric sensitivity of 29.983×10-3A mol L-1. The modified electrode showed a excellent stability and good reproducibility during experiments. © 2013 by ESG.

A simple hybrid synthesis processing method was developed to synthesize γ-MnO2 nanocrystalline particles. The polyol method was modified by the addition of nitric acid in order to allow the synthesizing of single-phase Mn3O4 in a large scale. In the sequence, the acid digestion technique was used to transform Mn3O4 into γ-MnO2. Structural and morphological characterization was carried out by X-ray diffractometry, Infrared and Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, nitrogen adsorption isotherm, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The electrochemical properties were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge measurements. The synthesized material exhibits a specific capacitance of 125.1 F g-1 at a mass loading of 0.98 mg cm-2. The relation between structural features and electrochemical activity is discussed by comparing the synthesized material with commercial electrolytic manganese dioxide. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
