The Effect of the Aminic Substituent on the Thermal Decomposition of Cyclic Dithiocarbamates

Estudos termogravimétricos e calorimétricos diferenciais para ditiocarbamatos de NH4+, Na+, Zn2+, Cd2+ e Pb2+, derivados de aminas cíclicas contendo nitrogênio como heteroátomos, foram realizados em atmosferas de ar e nitrogênio, para avaliar a influência da tensão angular dos anéis na decomposição térmica destes compostos, em relação à formação de tiocianatos metálicos como via de decomposição. Os intemediários formados foram caracterizados por difração de raios-X, tendo sido encontrados oxissulfatos de Zn2+, Cd2+ e Pb2+, sob atmosfera de ar, o que sugere a decomposição térmica nestas condições como via sintética para estes compostos. Os produtos de decomposição final obtidos foram sulfetos metálicos sob nitrogênio e óxidos dos metais de transição e sulfato de sódio sob ar. Entalpias de fusão são também descritas, com base nos resultados de DSC.

NORDSIECK FORMS OF STIFFLY-STABLE ADAMS-TYPE CYCLIC METHODS THAT ARE INSENSITIVE TO STEP-SIZE CHANGES

In this paper we determine a matrix S and a vector l for stiffly-stable Adams-type cyclic methods that are insensitive to step size changes by using the definition of equivalent methods, (see, e.g. [l]), in the Nordsieck notation. The elements S and l, written in a parametric form, permit us to represent in Nordsieck form the methods that were constructed in [7] and the new methods that satisfy the above properties.

Study of stress distribution with finite element method in a root with prefabricated threaded split shaft post - Part I

A finite element analysis was carried out to study the role of prefabricated threaded split shaft post (Flexi-Post) on dentinal stress in pulpless tooth. Three dimensional plane strain model of mesio-distal section of a human maxillary central incisor without restoration was analysed with the MSC/NASTRAN (MacNeal/ Schwendler) general purpose finite analysis program was executed on a microcomputer. The model as discretized into 48.954 axisymmetric finite elements defined by 10.355 nodes. Each element was assigned unique elastic properties to represent the materials modeled. Homogeneity, isotropy and linear elasticity were assume for all material. A simulation of static load of 100N was applied to the incisal edge of the post; vertical. Maximal principal stresses and von Mises equivalent stress were calculated. Using the element analysis model employed in this study, the following can be concluded concerning threaded split shaft post (Flexi-Post): Maximum principal stresses in dentin were located at cervical place and at the post apex. The apical threads of the post not redirecting stresses away from the root.

Multiple events of horizontal transfer of the Minos transposable element between Drosophila species

In this study the Minos element was analyzed in 26 species of the repleta group and seven species of the saltans group of the genus Drosophila. The PCR and Southern blot analysis showed a wide occurrence of the Minos transposable element among species of the repleta and the saltans groups and also a low number of insertions in both genomes. Three different analyses, nucleotide divergence, historical associations, and comparisons between substitution rates (d(N) and d(S)) of Minos and Adh host gene sequences, suggest the occurrence of horizontal transfer between repleta and saltans species. These data reinforce and extend the Arca and Savakis [Genetica 108 (2000) 263] results and suggest five events of horizontal transfer to explain the present Minos distribution: between D. saltans and the ancestor of the mulleri and the mojavensis clusters; between D. hydei and the ancestor of the mulleri and the mojavensis clusters; between D. mojavensis and D. aldrichi; between D. buzzatii and D. serido; and between D. spenceri and D. emarginata. An alternative explanation would be that repeated events of horizontal transfer involving D. hydei, which is a cosmopolitan species that diverged from the others repleta species as long as 14 Mya, could have spread Minos within the repleta group and to D. saltans. The data presented in this article support a model in which distribution of Minos transposon among Drosophila species is determined by horizontal transmission balanced by vertical inactivation and extinction. A finite element free convection model for the side wall heated cavity

This paper presents a finite element numerical solution of free convection in a cavity with side walls maintained at constant but different temperatures. The predictions from the model and the method of solution were validated by comparison with the 'bench mark' solution and Vahl Davis' results and good agreement was found. The present model was used to obtain additional results over a wide range of Rayleigh number (10(3)-10(6)) and L/H ratios varying from 0.1 to 1.0. The predicted stream function patterns, temperature and velocity profiles as well as the mean Nusselt number were presented and discussed. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

An application of the Element Free Galerkin Method to the analysis of quantum well structures

In order to obtain the quantum-mechanical properties of layered semicondutor structures (quantum well and superlattice structures, for instance), solutions of the Schrodinger equation should be obtained for arbitrary potential profiles. In this paper, it is shown that such problems may be also studied by the Element Free Galerkin Method.

Sol-gel prepared Pt-modified oxide layers: Synthesis, characterization, and electrocatalytic activity

Thin films of pure RuO2 and IrO2 and mixed Ru0.5Ir0.5O2 oxide modified with Pt particles were prepared by a sol-gel method in the form of thin films of similar to 2 mu m thickness on Ti substrates. Surface morphology of these Pt- modified oxides was examined by scanning electron microscopy and was found to exhibit a significant influence of the chemical composition of the oxide matrix. Element mapping showed homogeneous distribution of the metals. X- ray diffraction and X- ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses showed that these films consist of metallic Pt particles dispersed in an oxide matrix. Cyclic voltammetry in acid solutions showed that the sol- gel prepared layers have relatively high Pt surface areas. The electrocatalytic activity of these materials toward the anodic oxidation of formaldehyde and methanol was compared in terms of onset potential and current density and was found to follow the sequence: Pt- Ru0.5Ir0.5O2/ Ti > Pt- RuO2/ Ti > Pt- IrO2/ Ti.

Characterization of hobo element copy number and integrity in Brasilian populations of Drosophila melanogaster

We have determined the copy number and the presence of full-size hobo transposable elements in eight Brasilian strains of Drosophila melanogaster. Genomic DNA was digested with AvaII and XhoI restriction enzymes, respectively, and probed with a 963 bp sequence of the hobo element. Variable numbers of full-sized and defective elements were detected in all strains. The range of the copy number was 22.13 +/- 4.52. Blots showed the presence of a 2.6 kb fragment, corresponding to the complete element, in all strains exception of one and the 1.0 kb sequence, correponding to the Th1 and Th2 repressor elements. There was neither association among copy numbers of hobo elements and latitude nor the mean annual temperatures in the original geographical region of each strain.
