There are many advantages to using a microwave as a source of heat in hydrothermal reactions. Because it is a quick and homogeneous way to crystallize ceramic powders, it was used in this work for the production of antiferroelectric sodium mobate (NaNbO3) in a cubic-like form and its intermediary phase, disodium diniobate hydrate (Na2Nb2O6 center dot H2O), with a fiber morphology. The syntheses were carried out by treating niobic acid (Nb2O5 center dot nH(2)O) with NaOH. By changing the reaction time and the concentration of the reactants, particles with different structures and different morphologies could be obtained. The structural evolution of the products of this reaction was elucidated on the basis of the arrangement of the NbO6 octahedral units. Conclusive results were obtained with morphological and structural characterizations through XRD, TEM, MEV, and NMR and Raman spectroscopy. ((C) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Entre os fatores que podem influenciar o desempenho de tração do trator agrícola, destacam-se a pressão de inflação e a carga sobre o rodado motriz. Neste trabalho, o objetivo foi avaliar, em situação de campo, a influência dos fatores inflação (sob quatro níveis) e carga sobre o rodado motriz (sob quatro níveis), combinados com e sem o uso da tração dianteira auxiliar. O experimento, totalizando 32 tratamentos com três repetições, foi distribuído em blocos ao acaso. O trator estudado foi submetido a uma força de tração constante na barra de tração, imposta por outro trator. Os resultados evidenciaram a influência significativa da lastragem nos parâmetros patinagem e coeficiente de tração, que aumentaram com a redução da carga sobre o rodado. A pressão de inflação influiu significativamente nos parâmetros patinagem, velocidade de deslocamento e potência na barra, sem no entanto apresentar tendência de comportamento. O uso da tração dianteira auxiliar mostrou vantagens significativas em relação aos mesmos parâmetros anteriores. A interação dos fatores pressão de inflação e carga sobre o rodado mostrou que determinadas combinações de pressão foram mais favoráveis para o desenvolvimento de maior velocidade e menor patinagem. As características relacionadas ao desempenho do motor (consumo horário e rotação do motor) não foram afetadas por nenhum dos fatores e/ou suas interações.

The aim of this study was to characterize esterases in Zaprionus indianus, a drosophilid recently introduced into Brazil. A further aim was study the variation of activity of esterases in the presence of inhibitors and their expression according to sex, sexual activity and age of individual flies. Polymorphisms were detected in two esterase loci (Est-2 and Est-3) and monomorphisms in four others (Est-1, Est-4, Est-5 and Est-6). Biochemical tests using alpha- and beta-naphthyl acetate and the inhibitors malathion, eserine sulphate and PMSF allowed us to classify EST-2 and EST-5 as beta-esterases, both carboxyl-esterases, and EST-1, EST-3, EST-4 and EST-6 as alpha-esterases. EST-1 and EST-3 were classified as carboxyl-esterases and EST-4 and EST-6 as cholinesterases. EST-5 activity was more pronounced in males and EST-2 was restricted to them or to recently copulated females. EST-4, rarely detected, was not characterized. Based on their biochemical characteristics possible roles for these enzymes are suggested.

A salt elimination reaction between [YCl3(THF)(3.5)] and 1 or 2 equiv. of Tl(Tp(Ms*)) [Tp(Ms*) = HB(3-mesitylpyrazolyl)2(5-mesitylpyrazolyl)(-)] leads in both cases to single metathesis, giving a mixture of the mono-Tp(Ms*) complex [YCl3(Tp(Ms*))Tl] (1) and another complex, [YCl2(Tp(Ms* *))] (2) [Tp(Ms* *) = HB(3-mesitylpyrazolyl)(5-mesitylpyrazolyl)(2)(-)], that results from the transfer of a second mesityl group to the 5-position of the pyrazolyl ring. The solid-state structure of 1 shows a unique ate dimeric structure with the TV cations coordinated by two mu(2)- and two mu(3)-bridging Cl atoms as well as two eta(3)-mesityl ligands. In this brief article we discuss spin-polarization operators and spin-polarization states of 2 + 1 massive Dirac fermions and find a convenient representation by the help of 4-spinors for their description. We stress that in particular the use of such a representation allows us to introduce the conserved covariant spin operator in the 2 + 1 field theory. Another advantage of this representation is related to the pseudoclassical limit of the theory. Indeed, quantization of the pseudoclassical model of a spinning particle in 2 + 1 dimensions leads to the 4-spinor representation as the adequate realization of the operator algebra, where the corresponding operator of a first-class constraint, which cannot be gauged out by imposing the gauge condition, is just the covariant operator previously introduced in the quantum theory.

The magnetic-field and confinement effects on the Land, factor in AlxGa1-xAs parabolic quantum wells under magnetic fields applied parallel or perpendicular to the growth direction are theoretically studied. Calculations are performed in the limit of low temperatures and low electron density in the heterostructure. The g factor is obtained by taking into account the effects of non-parabolicity and anisotropy of the conduction band through the 2 x 2 Ogg-McCombe Hamiltonian, and by including the cubic Dresselhaus spin-orbit term. A simple formula describing the magnetic-field dependence of the effective Land, factor is analytically derived by using the Rayleigh-Schrodinger perturbation theory, and it is found in good agreement with previous experimental studies devoted to understand the behavior of the g factor, as a function of an applied magnetic field, in semiconductor heterostructures. Present numerical results for the effective Land, factor are shown as functions of the quantum-well parameters and magnetic-field strength, and compared with available experimental measurements.

Hadronic transitions rates in the heavy quarkonium systems are calculated within the framework of the QCD multipole expansion. The spectrum of glueballs consisting of two massive gluons, obtained by the use of the potential model, is adopted as a suitable description of the intermediate states. Comparisons with the quark confining string model (QCS) and the bag model are made. © 1990 Springer-Verlag.

A quark-diquark approximation is used to investigate the mass spectroscopy of the spin-1/2 baryons belonging to the SU(3)-flavor group in a nonrelativistic potential approach. The baryon spectra obtained are confronted with relativistic results and experimental data. Root-mean-square radii are also calculated. © 1993 Springer-Verlag.

We quantize a generalized version of the Schwinger model, where the two chiral sectors couples with different strengths to the U(1) gauge field. Starting from a theory which includes a generalized Wess-Zumino term, we obtain the equal time commutation relation for physical fields, both the singular and non-singular cases are considered. The photon propagators are also computed in their gauge dependent and invariant versions. © 1995 Springer-Verlag.

The solutions of a renormalized BCS equation are studied in three space dimensions in s, p and d waves for finite-range separable potentials in the weak to medium coupling region. In the weak-coupling limit, the present BCS model yields a small coherence length ξ and a large critical temperature, T c, appropriate for some high-T c materials. The BCS gap, T c, ξ and specific heat C s(T c) as a function of zero-temperature condensation energy are found to exhibit potential-independent universal scalings. The entropy, specific heat, spin susceptibility and penetration depth as a function of temperature exhibit universal scaling below T c in p and d waves.

It is shown that the appearance of a fixed-point singularity in the kernel of the two-electron Cooper problem is responsible for the formation of the Cooper pair for an arbitrarily weak attractive interaction between two electrons. This singularity is absent in the problem of three and few superconducting electrons at zero temperature on the full Fermi sea. Consequently, such three- and few-electron systems on the full Fermi sea do not form Cooper-type bound states for an arbitrarily weak attractive pair interaction.

In this work we calculate two two-loop massless Feynman integrals pertaining to self-energy diagrams using NDIM (Negative Dimensional Integration Method). We show that the answer we get is 36-fold degenerate. We then consider special cases of exponents for propagators and the outcoming results compared with known ones obtained via traditional methods.
