The impact of tillage systems on soil CO2 emission is a complex issue as different soil types are managed in various ways, from no-till to intensive land preparation. In southern Brazil, the adoption of a new management option has arisen most recently, with no-tillage as well as no burning of crops residues left on soil surface after harvesting, especially in sugar cane areas. Although such practice has helped to restore soil carbon, the tillage impact on soil carbon loss in such areas has not been widely investigated. This study evaluated the effect of moldboard plowing followed by offset disk harrow and chisel plowing on clay oxisolCO(2) emission in a sugar cane field treated with no-tillage and high crop residues input in the last 6 years. Emissions after tillage were compared to undisturbed soil CO2 emissions during a 4-week period by using an LI-6400 system coupled to a portable soil chamber. Conventional tillage caused the highest emission during almost the whole period studied, except for the efflux immediately following tillage, when the reduced plot produced the highest peak. The lowest emissions were recorded 7 days after tillage, at the end of a dry period, when soil moisture reached its lowest rate. A linear regression between Soil CO2 effluxes and soil moisture in the no-till and conventional plots corroborate the fact that moisture, and not soil temperature, was a controlling factor. Total soil CO2 loss was huge and indicates that the adoption of reduced tillage would considerably decrease soil carbon dioxide emission in our region, particularly during the summer season and when growers leave large amounts of crop residues on the soil surface. Although it is known that crop residues are important for restoring soil carbon, our result indicates that an amount equivalent to approximately 30% of annual crop carbon residues could be transferred to the atmosphere, in a period of 4 weeks only, when conventional tillage is applied on no-tilled soils. Alkaline metal doped organic - inorganic hybrids have potential applications in the field of portable energy sources. Attractive sol - gel derived urea cross-linked polyether, siloxane - PPO ( poly( propylene oxide)) hybrids doped with sodium salts ( NaClO4 and NaBF4) were examined by multi-spectroscopic approach that includes complex impedance, X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), Si-29 and Na-23 magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR/MAS), Na K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and Raman spectroscopies. The goals of this work were to determine which cation coordinating site of the host matrix ( ether oxygen atoms or carbonyl oxygen atoms) is active in each of the materials analyzed, its influence on the nanostructure of the samples and its relation with the thermal and electrical properties. The main conclusion derived from this study is that the NaBF4 salt has a much lower solubility in the hybrid matrix than the NaClO4 salt. Furthermore, the addition of a large amount of salt plays a major role in the hybrid nanostructure and electrical properties, modifying the PPO chain conformation, weakening or breaking the hydrogen bond of the polyether - urea associations and changing the polycondensation and aggregation processes involving the siloxane species.

Lactate is a compound produced by the anaerobic metabolism of glucose, and hyperlactataemia occurs when the rate of production of lactate exceeds the rate of elimination. This occurs in situations of hypoxia and tissue hypoperfusion. Lactate has been considered a useful prognostic indicator in critically ill patients. Pyometra is a disease of adult female dogs characterized by inflammation of the uterus with an accumulation of exudate, which occurs during the luteal phase. It is one of the most common diseases that occur in the genital tract of female dogs. A total of 31 dogs were diagnosed with pyometra. The diagnosis was confirmed at ultrasonography. of the 31 dogs, 25 females had open cervix pyometra and six had closed cervix pyometra. Plasma lactate concentrations were determined by an enzymatic colorimetric method. The average concentration (+/- SD) of plasma lactate in all 31 bitches with pyometra was 3.55 +/- 0.46 mm. Healthy dogs had plasma lactate concentrations between 0.3 and 2.5 mm (mean +/- SD). Concentrations ranged from 0.8 to 2.9 mm when plasma lactate was measured with a portable device and 0.42.6 mm with the blood gas analyser. Even though plasma lactate values vary between several studies and equipment used to measure concentrations, our results for dogs with pyometra are higher indicating hyperlactataemia (Thorneloe et al. , Can Vet J 48, 283288). Plasma lactate in dogs with closed cervix pyometra was mean +/- SD and in dogs with open cervix pyometra, it was mean +/- SD. The plasma lactate concentration in dogs with pyometra was higher than in healthy bitches, and there was no influence of patency of the cervix on the concentration of plasma lactate concentrations. Plasma lactate concentrations were similar for animals with open and closed pyometra (3.54 +/- 0.52 to 3.64 +/- 1.03 mm).

The study aimed to relate the photosynthetic pigments, which were extracted in a laboratory and the readings were obtained by the portable chlorophyll meter ClorofiLOG 1030, by using mathematical models in sesame leaves. This work was conducted in December 2010, at Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária (EMBRAPA) Cotton, where feaf discs were removed to measure chlorophyll indexes through the portable chlorophyll meter. The same leaf discs were subjected to extraction of photosynthetic pigments, by using 5 mL dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and were kept in a water bath at 70 degrees C for 30 min. Afterwards, an aliquot of 3 mL was removed to be read in a spectrophotometer at wavelengths of 470, 646 and 663 nm. Based on analytical results, mathematical models were adjusted by using the chlorophyll index to predict the levels of chlorophyll a, b, and total, and of carotenoids and their relationships. The study concluded that the portable chlorophyll meter ClorofiLOG 1030 can be used to estimate the concentration of photosynthetic pigments in sesame leaves with high precision, besides saving resources and time.

Successful application of shallow seismic reflection method is related directly to the ability of the ground to transmit high-frequency seismic energy from a seismic source. The dominant frequencies of reflection data are in the range of 50 to 100 Hz and depend on the surface materials and water table. A spread of geophones send the siemsic signal to be recorded on a 12, 24 or 48 channel portable seismograph, using a single high-frequency geophone per channel. Although it is possible to find seismographs with display and processing unities, it is also possible to transfer digitalized data to a personal computer to be processed and interpreted by using specific programs. Some results of two recent field studies to specify the underground structure in the tidal flats area of Baie St. Paul (Quebec-Canada) and in glacial terrains, in the Waterloo (Ontario-Canada) region. -from English summary

Coffea arabica is considered to be sensitive to low temperatures, being affected throughout its entire life cycle. Injury caused by chilling (low temperatures above zero degree centigrade) is characterized primarily by inhibition of the photosynthetic process. The objective of this work was to evaluate the role of photosynthetic pigments in the tolerance of coffee (C. arabica L.) seedlings to chilling. The evaluation the photosynthetic activity was made by emission of Chl a fluorescence at room temperature (25°C) in vivo and in situ, using a portable fluorometer. The pigment content was obtained by extraction with 80% acetone, while estimation of membrane lipid peroxidation was determined by measuring the MDA content in leaf tissue extracts. The results indicated a generalized reduction in the quantum yield of PSII when the seedlings were maintained in the dark. The reduction occurred in the seedlings submitted to chilling treatment as well as in the control ones. This demonstrates that not only chilling acts to cause an alteration in PSII. It is possible that the tissue storage reserves had been totally exhausted, with the respiratory rate exceeding the photosynthetic rate; the later was nil, since the seedlings were kept in the dark. The efficiency in the capture, transfer and utilization of light energy in PS11 photochemical reactions requires a sequence of photochemical, biochemical and biophysical events which depend on the structural integrity of the photosynthetic apparatus. However, this efficiency was found to be related to the protective action of chloroplastid pigments, rather than to the concentration of these pigments.

This paper describes a simple, portable and environmentally friendly method for the rapid determination of dipyrone in pharmaceuticals by using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The proposed method is based on the reflectance measurements of the orange compound produced from the spot test reaction between dipyrone and p-dimethylaminocinnamaldehyde (p-DAC), in acid medium, using a filter paper as solid support. Experimental design methodologies were used to optimize the measurement conditions. All reflectance measurements were carried out at 510 nm and the linear range was from 1.42 × 10-4-2.85 × 10-3 mol L-1, with a correlation coefficient of 0.999. The limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantification (LOQ) were 1.20 × 10-5 mol L-1 and 4.00 × 10-5 mol L-1, respectively. The intraday precision and interday precision were studied for 10 replicate analyses of 7.90 × 10-4 mol L-1 dipyrone solution. The coefficients of variation were 1.1 and 0.9%, respectively. The proposed method was applied successfully to the determination of dipyrone in commercial brands of pharmaceuticals. No interferences were observed from the common excipients in formulations. The results obtained by the proposed method were favorably compared with those given by the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia procedure at 95% confidence level. ©2007 Sociedade Brasileira de Química.

The increasing use of mobile devices and wireless communication technologies has improved the access to web information systems. However, the development of these systems imposes new challenges mainly due to the heterogeneity of mobile devices, the management of context information, and the complexity of adaptation process. Especially in this case, these systems should be runable on a great number of mobile devices models. In this article, we describe a context-aware architecture that provides solutions to the challenges presented above for the development of education administration systems. Copyright 2009 ACM.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the Shore A hardness and surface roughness of two silicones for maxillofacial prosthetic treatment, under the influence of chemical disinfection and storage. Twenty-eight specimens were obtained, half of which were made of Silastic MDX 4-4210 silicone and, the other half were made of Silastic 732 RTV silicone. The specimens were divided into four groups: Silastic 732 RTV and MDX 4-4210 with disinfection 3 times a week with Efferdent tablets and the same materials without disinfection. The hardness of the materials was analyzed with a Shore A Durometer. The surface roughness was established by a digital portable roughness tester, initially and 2 months after the confection of the specimens. A variance test was applied (2-way ANOVA), followed by Tukey test (the level of significance was set at 1%). The storage time factor statistically influenced (p < 0.01) the materials' properties of hardness and roughness. MDX 4-4210 (28.59 Shore A, 0.789 Ra) presented higher values than Silastic 732 RTV (18.08 Shore A, 0.656 Ra) for both properties. Regarding the disinfection period, there was no significant difference in any of the materials tested. © 2009 Sociedade Brasileira de Pesquisa Odontológica.

The relative chlorophyll determination is used to predict the need for nitrogen fertilization aiming to increase production in various cultures. The objective of this study was to evaluate the soil nitrogen dose response added to the soil via fertigation in radish production and the relation between chlorophyll and cultivar Redondo Vermelho leaf nitrogen content. Transverse diameter of root, leaf area, green index, leaf N contents, shoots (stem) production, number of commercial and noncommercial roots, and the total commercial mass roots were evaluated. The N doses didn't interfere in the radish production and the readings taken with portable chlorophyll meter are not very accurate in ascertaining the level of N on radish plant growth.
