Thin films were deposited from hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) in a glow discharge supplied with radiofrequency (rf) power. Actino-metric optical emission spectroscopy was used to follow trends in the plasma concentrations of the species SiH (414.2 nm), CH (431.4 nm), CO (520.0 nm), and H (656.3 nm) as a function of the applied rf power (range 5 to 35 W). Transmission infrared spectroscopy (IRS) was employed to characterize the molecular structure of the polymer, showing the presence of Si-H, Si-O-Si, Si-O-C and C-H groups. The deposition rate, determined by optical interferometry, ranged from 60 to 130 nm/min. Optical properties were determined from transmission ultra violet-visible spectroscopy (UVS) data. The absorption coefficient α, the refractive index n, and the optical gap E04 of the polymer films were calculated as a function of the applied power. The refractive index at a photon energy of 1 eV varied from 1.45 to 1.55, depending on the rf power used for the deposition. The absorption coefficient showed an absorption edge similar to other non-crystalline materials, amorphous hydrogenated carbon, and semiconductors. For our samples, we define as an optical gap, the photon energy E04 corresponding to the energy at an absorption of 104 cm-1. The values of E04 decreased from 5.3 to 4.6 as the rf power was increased from 5 to 35 W. © 1995.

This work reports on the optical properties of Cr3+ ions in the pseudoternary system InF3-GdF3-GaF3. Linear properties, investigated through absorption and emission spectra, provide information on the crystal field, the frequency, and number of phonons emitted during the absorption to the 4T2 band and the emission to the 4A2 ground state, and the Fano antiresonance line shape in the vicinity of the 4A2→2E transition. A study of the nonlinear refractive index as a function of the wavelength, carried out with the Z-scan technique, provides spectroscopic data about electronic transitions starting from the excited state.

Strontium bismuth tantalate thin films were prepared on several substrates (platinized silicon (Pt/Ti/SiO 2 /Si), n -type (100)-oriented and p -type (111)-oriented silicon wafers, and fused silica) by the solution deposition method. The resin was obtained by the polymeric precursor method, based on the Pechini process, using strontium carbonate, bismuth oxide, and tantalum ethoxide as starting reagents. Characterizations by XRD and SEM were performed for structural and microstructural evaluations. The electrical measurements, carried on the MFM configuration, showed P r values of 6.24 μC/cm 2 and 31.5 kV/cm for the film annealed at 800 C. The film deposited onto fused silica and treated at 700 C presented around 80% of transmittance. © 2002 Taylor & Francis.

In this report we investigate the optical properties and energy-transfer upconversion luminescence of Ho3+- and Tb3+/Yb 3+-codoped PbGeO3-PbF2-CdF2 glass-ceramic under infrared excitation. In Ho3+/Yb 3+-codoped sample, green(545 nm), red(652 nm), and near-infrared(754 nm) upconversion luminescence corresponding to the 4S 2(5F4) → 5I8, 5F5 → 5I8, and 4S2(5F4) → 5I 7, respectively, was readly observed. Blue(490 nm) signals assigned to the 5F2,3 → 5I8 transition was also detected. In the Tb3+/Yb3+ system, bright UV-visible emission around 384, 415, 438, 473-490, 545, 587, and 623 nm, identified as due to the 5D3(5G6) → 7FJ(J=6,5,4) and 5D4→ 7FJ(J=6,5,4,3) transitions, was measured. The comparison of the upconversion process in glass ceramic and its glassy precursor revealed that the former samples present much higher upconversion efficiencies. The dependence of the upconversion emission upon pump power, and doping contents was also examined. The results indicate that successive energy-transfer between ytterbium and holmium ions and cooperative energy-transfer between ytterbium and terbium ions followed by excited-state absorption are the dominant upconversion excitation mechanisms herein involved. The viability of using the samples for three-dimensional solid-state color displays is also discussed.

This work reports on the pure lithium tantalate (LiTaO3), europium (III)-doped LiTaO3 and magnesium (II)-europium (III)-doped LiTaO3 preparared by the polymeric precursor method, using four different powered samples of Eu3+ ion concentrations 0.1 to 1at %. Structural and optical properties of powders have been studied. The different possible sites occupied by the rare earth were examined. The phase contents and lattice parameters were studied by the Rietveld method and the structural disorder in the LiTaO3 host caused by Eu3+ ions was analyzed. Results indicated LiTaO3 free of secondary phases at 650°C and the photoluminescence (PL) emission spectra showed the characteristic sharp emission bands given by Eu3+ ions when they are excited at a wavelength of 399 nm. An increase of dopants contents caused a non-homogeneous broadening and showed a slightly larger one when Mg was added. A displacement of the transition 5D0-7F0 to shorter wavelengths as function of Eu3+ concentration was also noticed.

CCTO thin films were deposited on Pt(111)/Ti/SiO 2/Si substrates using a chemical (polymeric precursor) and pressure method. The pressure effects on the CCTO thin films were evaluated by XRD, FEG-SEM and optical properties. Pressure films were found to be more homogeneous and dense than chemical deposition films. Pressure also leaded to an increase in the photoluminescence emission; it is suggested that the displacement of Ti in the titanate clusters, favors the charge transference from TiO 6 to [TiO 5V o z], TiO 5V o z] to [CaO 11V o z] and [TiO 5V o z] to [CuO 4] x. The low synthesis temperature used in the pressure method allows the deposition of films on less expensive substrates (i.e. glass, aluminum, polymer and others).

ZnO thin films were prepared by the polymeric precursor method. The films were deposited on silicon substrates using the spin-coating technique, and were annealed at 330°C for 32h under pressure-assisted thermal annealing and under ambient pressure. Their structural and optical properties were characterized, and the phases formed were identified by X-ray diffraction. No secondary phase was detected. The ZnO thin films were also characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, photoluminescence and ultraviolet emission intensity measurements. The effect of pressure on these thin films modifies the active defects that cause the recombination of deep level states located inside the band gap that emit yellow-green (575nm) and orange (645nm) photoluminescence. © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Glasses in the ternary system (70 - x)NaPO3-30WO 3-xBi2O3, with x = 0-30 mol %, were prepared by the conventional melt-quenching technique. X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements were performed to confirm the noncrystalline nature of the samples. The influence of the Bi2O3 on the thermal, structural, and optical properties was investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis showed that the glass transition temperature, Tg, increases from 405 to 440 C for 0 ≤ x ≤ 15 mol % and decreases to 417 C for x = 30 mol %. The thermal stability against devitrification decreases from 156 to 67 C with the increase of the Bi2O3 content. The structural modifications were studied by Raman scattering, showing a bismuth insertion into the phosphate chains by Bi-O-P linkage. Furthermore, up to 15 mol % of Bi 2O3 formation of BiO6 clusters is observed, associated with Bi-O-Bi linkage, resulting in a progressive break of the linear phosphate chains that leads to orthophosphate Q0 units. The linear refractive index, n0, was measured using the prism-coupler technique at 532, 633, and 1550 nm, whereas the nonlinear (NL) refractive index, n 2 was measured at 1064 nm using the Z-scan technique. Values of 1.58 ≤ n0 ≤ 1.88, n2 ≥ 10-15 cm 2/W and NL absorption coefficient, α2 ≤ 0.01 cm/GW, were determined. The linear and NL refractive indices increase with the increase of the Bi2O3 concentration. The large values of n0 and n2, as well as the very small α2, indicate that these materials have large potential for all-optical switching applications in the near-infrared. © 2012 American Chemical Society.

In this paper, a combined theoretical and experimental study on the electronic structure and photoluminescence (PL) properties of beta zinc molybdate (β-ZnMoO4) microcrystals synthesized by the hydrothermal method has been employed. These crystals were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rietveld refinement, Fourier transform Raman (FT-Raman) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopies. Their optical properties were investigated by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopy and PL measurements. First-principles quantum mechanical calculations based on the density functional theory at the B3LYP level have been carried out. XRD patterns, Rietveld refinement, FT-Raman and FT-IR spectra showed that these crystals have a wolframite-type monoclinic structure. The Raman and IR frequencies experimental results are in reasonable agreement with theoretically calculated results. UV-Vis absorption measurements shows an optical band gap value of 3.17 eV, while the calculated band structure has a value of 3.22 eV. The density of states indicate that the main orbitals involved in the electronic structure of β-ZnMoO4 crystals are (O 2p-valence band and Mo 4d-conduction band). Finally, PL properties of β-ZnMoO4 crystals are explained by means of distortions effects in octahedral [ZnO6] and [MoO6] clusters and inhomogeneous electronic distribution into the lattice with the electron density map. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Germanium- and tellurium-based glasses have been largely studied due to their recognized potential for photonics. In this paper, we review our recent studies that include the investigation of the Stokes and anti-Stokes photoluminescence (PL) in different glass systems containing metallic and semiconductor nanoparticles (NPs). In the case of the samples with metallic NPs, the enhanced PL was attributed to the increased local field on the rare-earth ions located in the proximity of the NPs and/or the energy transfer from the metallic NPs to the rare-earth ions. For the glasses containing silicon NPs, the PL enhancement was mainly due to the energy transfer from the NPs to the Er3+ ions. The nonlinear (NL) optical properties of PbO-GeO 2 films containing gold NPs were also investigated. The experiments in the pico- and subpicosecond regimes revealed enhanced values of the NL refractive indices and large NL absorption coefficients in comparison with the films without gold NPs. The reported experiments demonstrate that germanate and tellurite glasses, having appropriate rare-earth ions doping and NPs concentration, are strong candidates for PL-based devices, all-optical switches, and optical limiting. © 2013 Cid Bartolomeu de Araujo et al.

CeO2 nanoparticles were synthesized by the precipitation method and modified with para-toluene sulfonic acid (PTSH), either in situ or post-synthesis. The presence of PTSH in the samples was confirmed by FTIR. PXRD and FTIR analyses showed that the post-synthesis PTSH modification altered the CeO2 structure, whereas the in situ modification maintained intact the crystalline structure and UV-vis absorbance properties. For both in situ and post-synthesis modifications, TEM images revealed the presence of nanoparticles that were 5nm in size. The dispersibility of the in situ PTSH-modified material in a hydrophilic ureasil-poly(ethylene oxide) matrix was investigated using SAXS measurements, which indicated that CeO2 nanoparticles modified with PTSH in situ were less aggregated within the matrix, compared to unmodified CeO2 nanoparticles. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

We have prepared heavy metal oxide glasses containing metallic copper nanoparticles with promising nonlinear optical properties which were determined by Z-scan and pump-probe measurements using femtosecond laser pulses. For the wavelengths within the plasmon band, we have observed saturable absorption and response times of 2.3 ps. For the other regions of the spectrum, reverse saturable absorption and lifetimes shorter than 200 fs were verified. The nonlinear refractive index is about 2.0 × 10-19 m2/W from visible to telecom region, thus presenting an enhancement effect at wavelengths near the plasmon and Cu+2 d-d band. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

The nonlinear (NL) optical properties of glassy xBi2O 3-(1-x) GeO2 with x = 0.72 and 0.82 were investigated. The experiments were performed with lasers at 800 nm (pulses of 150 fs) and 532 nm (pulses of 80 ps and 250 ns). Using the Kerr gate technique, we observed that the NL response of the samples at 800 nm is faster than 150 fs. NL refraction indices, | n 2 | ≈ 5 × 10-16 cm2/W, and two-photon absorption coefficients, α 2, smaller than 0.03 cm/GW, were measured at 800 nm. At 532 nm, we measured the NL transmittance of the samples. From the results obtained, we determined α 2 ≈1 cm/GW and excited-state absorption cross-sections of ≈10-22 cm2 due to free-carriers. © 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.
