We show room temperature charge-density wave (CDW) characteristics in d.c. and a.c. electric data in pressed pellets of lightly doped poly(3-methylthiophene). The possibility of a Peierls glass is discussed and metastables states are observed. D.C. and A.C. data also show a state with negative differencial resistance.

Superconductor films of the BSCCO system have been grown by dip coating technique with good success. The chemical method allows us to grow high temperature superconductor thin films to get better control of stoichiometry, large areas and is cheaper than other methods. There is a great technological interest in growth oriented superconductor films due anisotropic characteristics of superconductor materials of high critical temperature, specifically the cuprates, as we know that the orientation may increase the electrical transport properties. Based on this, the polymeric precursor method has been used to obtain thin films of the BSCCO system. In this work we have applied that method together with the deposition technique known as dip coating to obtain Bi-based superconductor thin films, specifically, Bi1.6Pb0.4Sr2.0C2.0Cu3.0Ox+8, also known as 2223 phase with a critical temperature around 110 K. The films with multilayers have been grown on crystalline substrates of LaAlO3 and orientated (100) after being heat treated around 790 degrees C - 820 degrees C in lapse time of 1 hour in a controlled atmosphere. XRD measurements have shown the presence of a crystalline phase 2212 with a critical temperature around 85 K with (001) orientation, as well as a small fraction of 2223 phase. SEM has shown a low uniformity and some cracks that maybe related to the applied heat treatment. WDS has also been used to study the films composition. Different heat treatments have been used with the aim to increase the percentage of 2223 phase. Measurements of resistivity confirmed the presence of at least two crystalline phases, 2212 and 2223, with T-c around 85 K and 110 K, respectively.

The influence of niobia addition on the phase formation and dielectric properties of Pb(Zr0.45Ti0.55)O-3 powder prepared from polymeric precursor was analyzed. The weight fraction and unit-cell volume of the tetragonal phase decreased, and the mass fraction of the rhombohedral phase increased, with increasing niobia concentration. The rhombohedral unit-cell volume increased up to 5 mol% of added Nb and then decreased. Small amounts of pyrochlore and tetragonal zirconia phases were observed in PZT powder with more than 10 mol% Nb. These results were interpreted as an indication that the Nb ion was substituted for the zirconium ion in the tetragonal phase. For sintered PZT samples at 1100 degrees C, no free-zirconia phase was observed. The dielectric constant increased with the niobia addition up to 5 mol% and decreased for higher concentrations. The Curie temperature decreased with niobia addition up to 10 mol% before the formation of pyrochlore phase. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

The BBT films were prepared by a spin-coating process from the polymeric precursor method (Pechini process). In order to study the influence of the temperature on the BBT microstructure and electrical properties, the films were deposited on platinum coated silicon substrates and annealed from 700degreesC to 800degreesC for 2 hours in oxygen atmosphere. The crystallinity of the films was examined by X-ray diffraction while the surface morphology was analysed by atomic force microscope. The dielectric properties and dissipation factor of BaBi2Ta2O9 films at 1 MHz were observed. The polarization-electric field hysteresis loops revealed the ferroelectric characteristics of BaBi2Ta2O9 thin films.

Ferroelectric PbTiO3 thin films were successfully prepared on a Pt(111)Ti/SiO2/Si(100) substrate for the first time by spin coating, using the polymeric precursor method. X-ray diffraction patterns of the films indicate that they are polycrystalline in nature. This method allows low temperature (500 degrees C) synthesis and high electrical properties. The multilayer PbTiO3 thin films were granular in structure with a grain size of approximately 110-120 nm. A 380-nm-thick film was obtained by carrying out four cycles of the spin-coating/heating process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses showed the surface of these thin films to be smooth, dense and crack-free with low surface roughness (=3.4 nm). At room temperature and at a frequency of 100 kHz, the dielectric constant and the dissipation factor were, respectively, 570 and 0.016. The C-V characteristics of perovskite thin film prepared at low temperature show normal ferrolectric behavior. The remanent polarization and coercive field for the films deposited were 13.62 mu C/cm(2) and 121.43 kV/cm, respectively. The high electrical property values are attributed to the excellent microstrutural quality and chemical homogeneity of thin films obtained by the polymeric precursor method. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V. BiFeO3 (BFO) thin films were fabricated on Pt(111)/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates by using a polymeric precursor solution under appropriate crystallization conditions. The capacitance dependence on voltage is strongly nonlinear, confirming the ferroelectric properties of the films resulting from the domain switching. The leakage current density increases with annealing temperature. The polarization electric field curves could be obtained in BFO films annealed at 500 degrees C, free of secondary phases. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra of films annealed at 500 degrees C indicated that the oxidation state of Fe was purely 3+, demonstrating that our films possess stable chemical configurations. Glassy polymeric carbon (GPC) is a useful material for medical applications due to its chemical inertness and biocompatible characteristics. Mitral and aortic and hydrocephalic valves are examples of GPC prosthetic devices that have been fabricated and commercialized in Brazil. In this work, ion beam was used to improve the mechanical characteristics of GPC surface and therefore to avoid the propagation of microcracks where the cardiac valves are more fragile. A control group of phenolic resin samples heat-treated at 300, 400, 700, 1000, 1500, and 2500 degrees C was characterized by measuring their hardness and Young's reduced elastic modulus with the depth of indentation. The control group was compared to results obtained with samples heat-treated at 700, 1000, and 1500 degrees C and bombarded with energetic ions of silicon, carbon, oxygen, and gold at energies of 5, 6, 8, and 10 MeV, respectively, with fluences between 10x10(13) and 10x10(16) ions/cm(2). GPC nonbombarded samples showed that hardness depends on the heat treatment temperature (HTT), with a maximum hardness for heat treatment at 1000 degrees C. The comparison between the control group and bombarded group also showed that hardness, after bombardment, had a greater increase for samples prepared at 700 degrees C than for samples prepared at higher temperatures. The Young's elastic modulus presents an exponential relationship with depth. The parameters obtained by fitting depend on the HTT and on the ion used in the bombardment more than on energy and fluence. The hardness results show clearly that bombardment can promote carbonization, increase the linkage between the chains of the polymeric material, and promote recombination of broken bonds in lateral groups that are more numerous for samples heat-treated at 700 degrees C. High-quality (Pb, La)TiO3 ferroelectric thin films were successfully prepared on a Pt(111)/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) substrate for the first time by spin coating, using the polymeric precursor method. The X-ray diffraction patterns show that the films are polycrystalline in nature. This method allows for low temperature (500 degrees C) synthesis, a high quality microstructure and superior dielectric properties. The effects on the microstructure and electrical properties were studied by changing the La content. The films annealed at 500 degreesC have a single perovskite phase with only a tetragonal or pseudocubic structure. As the La content is increased, the dielectric constant of PLT thin films increases from 570 up to 1138 at room temperature. The C-V and P-E characteristics of perovskite thin films prepared at a low temperature show normal ferroelectric behavior, representing the ferroelectric switching property. The remanent polarization and coercive field of the films deposited decreased due to the transformation from the ferroelectric to the paraelectric phase with an increased La content. In this investigation, the air drying characteristics of fresh and osmotically pre-treated pineapple slices in a tray dryer were studied under different operating conditions. The air velocity varied from 1.5 to 2.5 m/s and the air temperature from 40 to 70 degreesC. The analytical solution of the second Fick's law for an infinite slab was used to calculate effective diffusion coefficients and their temperature dependence could be well represented by an Arrhenius-type equation. Comparison of the results showed that the diffusion coefficients were lower for the pre-treated fruit. By means of automatic control, it was possible to obtain drying curves under conditions of constant product temperature, which showed to be an alternative to reduce the drying time of pineapple slices.

We discuss non-steady state electrical characteristics of a metal-insulator-metal structure. We consider an exponential distribution (in energy) of impurity states in addition to impurity states at a single energy level within the depletion region. We discuss thermal as well as isothermal characteristics and present an expression for the temperature of maximum current (Tm) and a method to calculate the density of exponentially distributed impurity states. We plot the theoretical curves for various sets of parameters and the variation of Tm, and Im (maximum current) with applied potential for various impurity distributions. The present model can explain the available experimental results. Finally we compare the non-steady state characteristics in three cases: (i) impurity states only at a single energy level, (ii) uniform energetic distribution of impurity states, and (iii) exponential energetic distribution of impurity states.

The formation of calcium silicate hydrates (C-S-H) during the hydration of tricalcium silicate (C3S) in pure water and in water solutions containing 1% CaCl2 (accelerator) and 0.01% saccharose (retarder) was studied by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). SAXS measurements were performed under isothermal conditions within the temperature range 25 °C T < 52 °C. The experimental results indicate that the time variation of the mass fraction of the C-S-H product phase, α(f), can be fitted, under all conditions of paste setting, by Avrami equation, α(t) = 1 -exp(-(kt)′), k being a rate parameter and n an exponent depending on the characteristics of the transformation. The parameter n is approximately equal to 2 for hydration of C^S in pure water. Depending on temperature, n varies from 2 to 2.65 for hydration in the presence of CaC^ and saccharose. The value n = 2 is theoretically expected for lateral growth of thin C-S-H plates of constant thickness. The time dependence of SAXS intensity indicates that the transformed phase (C-S-H) consists of colloidal particles in early stages of hydration, evolving by two-dimensional growth toward a disordered lamellar structure composed of very thin plates. The activation energy ΔE for the growth of C-S-H phase was determined from the time dependence of X-ray scattering intensity. These data were obtained by in situ measurements at different temperatures of hydration. The values of ΔE are 37.7, 49.4, and 44.3 kJ/mol for hydration in pure water and in water solutions containing CaCl2 and saccharose, respectively. © 2000 American Chemical Society.

Co3O4 can be used as electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction. The macro and microstructure of the oxide, obtained by compacting and sintering lithium-doped Co3O4 powder in atmosphere of dry air and in conditions of controlled temperature and time was analyzed by metallographic techniques. The porous material was characterized by XRD, SEM and EDS combined techniques. For working temperatures up to 1200°C, the pellet was consituted of particles with varying sizes over a wide range of particle size and, at higher temperatures CoO is formed and polymorphic transformation was observed. The materials were also characterized electrochemically in alkaline media by open circuit potential and potentiodynamic I/E measurements. The results were compared to those previously prepared by others by thermal deposition.

The growth and the extracellular amylase production by Aspergillus ochraceus were studied in a stationary culture medium. Maximum growth rate of this fungus was found after 5 days of incubation at 30° C, but maximum amylase production was obtained after 2 days. The highest amylase production were attained with lactose, maltose, xylose and starch as carbon sources. The extracellular amylase production and mycelial growth were influenced by the concentration of starch. Other carbohydrates supported growth but did not induce amylase synthesis and glucose repressed it, indicating catabolite repression in this microorganism. The presence of both mechanisms of induction and repression suggests that at least these multiple forms of regulation are present in A. ochraceus. Of the nitrogen sources tested, casaminoacids, ammonium nitrate and sodium nitrate stimulated the highest yield of amylase. Optimal amylase production was obtained at pH 5.0, but enzyme activity was found only in the 4.0-6.0 pH range. These results were probably due to the inhibitory effect of NH 4 +-N in the culture medium.

Responses of photosynthetic rates, determined by oxygen evolution using the light and dark bottles technique, to different temperatures, irradiances, pH, and diurnal rhythm were analyzed under laboratory conditions in four charophyte species (Chara braunii Gmelin, C. guairensis R. Bicudo, Nitella subglomerata A. Braun and Nitella sp.) from Iotic habitats in southeastern Brazil. Parameters derived from the photosynthesis versus irradiance curves indicated affinity to low irradiances for all algae tested. Some degree of photoinhibition, [β = -(0.30-0.13) mg 02 g-1 dry weight h-1 (μmol photons m-2 s-1)-1], low light compensation points (lc = 4-20 μmol photons m-2 s-1) were found for all species analyzed, as well as low values of light saturation parameter (lk) and saturation (ls) 29-130 and 92-169 μmol photons m-2 S-1, respectively. Photoacclimation was observed in two populations of N. subglomerata collected from sites with different irradiances, consisting of variations in photosynthetic parameters (higher values of α, and lower of lk and maximum photosynthetic rate, Pmax, in the population under lower irradiance). The highest photosynthetic rates for Chara species were observed at 10-15°C, while for Nitella the highest photosynthetic rate was observed at 20-25°C, despite the lack of significant differences among most levels tested. Rates of dark respiration significantly increase with temperature, with the highest values at 25°C. The results from pH experiments showed highest photosynthetic rates under pH 4.0 for all algae, suggesting higher affinity for inorganic carbon in the form of carbon dioxide, except in one population of N. subglomerata, with similar rates under the three levels, suggesting indistinct use of bicarbonate and carbon dioxide. Diurnal changes in photosynthetic rates revealed a general pattern for most algae tested, which was characterized by two peaks: the first (higher) during the morning (07.00-11.00) and the second (lower) in the afternoon (14.00-17.00). This suggests an endogenous rhythm determining the daily variations in photosynthetic rates.
