Glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) were modified with poly(glutamic acid) acid films prepared using three different procedures: glutamic acid monomer electropolymerization (MONO), evaporation of poly(glutamic acid) (PAG) and evaporation of a mixture of poly(glutamic acid)/glutaraldehyde (PAG/GLU). All three films showed good adherence to the electrode surface. The performance of the modified GCE was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry, and the films were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The three poly(glutamic acid) modified GCEs were tested using the electrochemical oxidation of ascorbic acid and a decrease of the overpotential and the improvement of the oxidation peak current was observed. The PAG modified electrode surfaces gave the best results. AFM morphological images showed a polymeric network film formed by well-defined nanofibres that may undergo extensive swelling in solution, allowing an easier electron transfer and higher oxidation peaks. The recycling of soft drink bottles poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) has been used as an additive in varnish containing alkyd resin. The PET, called to recycled PET (PET-R), was added to the varnish in increasing amounts. Samples of varnish containing PET-R (VPET-R) were used as a film onto slides and its thermal properties were evaluated using thermogravimetry (TG). Throughout the visual analysis and thermal behavior of VPET-R it is possible to identify that the maximum amount of PET-R added to the varnish without changing in the film properties was 2%.The kinetic parameters, such as activation energy (E) and the pre-exponential factor (A) were calculated by the isoconversional Flynn-Wall-Ozawa method for the samples containing 0.5 to 2.0% PET-R. A decrease in the values of E was verified for lower amounts of PET-R for the thermal decomposition reaction. A kinetic compensation effect (KCE) represented by the lnA=-13.42+0.23E equation was observed for all samples. The most suitable kinetic model to describe this decomposition process is the autocatalytic Sestak-Berggren, being the model applied to heterogeneous systems.

Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate), PHB, has been structurally modified with maleic anhydride, MA, in the presence of triethylamine, TEA. Glass transition, melting, and crystallization temperature, obtained from DSC curves, and thermal degradation temperatures obtained from TG ones, were employed to evaluate the influence of the MA proportion on the modification in the PHB chain. According to the results, most of chain modification reactions are the 80/20 and 90/10 proportions. Observations suggest that most chain modification reactions occur when the ratio of PHB/MA is 80/20 or 90/10. This suggests that modifications of PHB in the presence of MA involve main chain scission.

The non-isothermal data given by TG curves for poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) were studied in order to obtain a consistent kinetic model that better represents the PHB thermal decomposition. Thus, data obtained from the dynamic TG curves were suitably managed in order to obtain the Arrhenius kinetic parameter E according to the isoconversional F-W-O method. Once the E parameters is found, a suitable logA and kinetic model (f(alpha)) could be calculated. Hence, the kinetic triplet (E +/- SD, logA +/- SD and f(alpha)) obtained for the thermal decomposition of PHB under non-isothermal conditions was E=152 +/- 4 kJ mol(-1), logA=14.1 +/- 0.2 s(-1) for the kinetic model, and the autocatalytic model function was: f(alpha)=alpha(m)(1-alpha)(n)=alpha(0.42)(1-alpha)(0.56).

The present work describes the preparation and characterization of polyelectrolyte coatings of poly-L-lysine (PLL) to modify a glassy carbon electrode and its application to the pre-accumulation of nitroprusside (NP). The effects of the coating on the electrochemical reduction of NP were investigated. The performance of the modified electrode indicates that the drug can be immobilized by electrostatic interaction and the voltammetric signal monitored at all pH values in the range of 2-12. The strong interaction between NP and PLL stabilizes the complex on the electrode surface and minimizes the chemical reaction of lost CN- ions as a subsequent reaction of electron transfer, which could improve the action mechanism of NP.

The interaction between the nonionic surfactant C(12)E(5) and a high molar mass (M = 5.94 x 10(5)) poly(ethylene oxide) (PEG) in aqueous solution has been examined as a function of temperature by dynamic light scattering and fluorescence methods over a broad concentration range. Clusters of small surfactant micelles form within the PEO coil, leading to its extension. The hydrodynamic radius of the complex increases strongly with temperature as well as with the concentrations of surfactant and polymer. At high concentrations of the surfactant, the coil/micellar cluster complex coexists with free C(12)E(5) micelles in the solution. Fluorescence quenching measurements show a moderate micellar growth from 155 to 203 monomers in PEO-free solutions of C(12)E(5) over a wide concentration range (0.02-2.5%) at 8 degrees C. Below 0.25% C(12)E(5), the average aggregation number (N) of the micelles is smaller in the presence of PEO than in its absence. However, N increases with increasing surfactant concentration up to a plateau value of about 270 at about 1.2% (ca. 30 mM) C(12)E(5). At high surfactant concentrations, N is larger in the presence of polymer than in its absence, a finding which is connected to a significant lowering of the clouding temperature due to the PEO at these compositions. Similar results of increasing aggregation number followed by a plateau were also found at a fixed concentration of surfactant (2.5%) and varied PEO.
