Thin films of chemically synthesized polyaniline and poly(o-methoxyaniline) were exposed to ionizing X-ray radiation and characterized by radiation induced conductivity measurements, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, electrical conductivity and solubility measurements. Samples irradiated in vacuum or dry Oxygen atmosphere did not have their electronic spectra changed. However, under humid atmosphere the energy of the excitonic transition was decreased and accompanied by a great conductivity increase. The results indicate that doping of polyaniline can be induced by X-ray radiation which might be of great interest for applications on lithography and microelectronics.

Measurements of 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) relaxation times, Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) and AC Impedance Spectroscopy (IS) are reported for composites based on PEO8:LiClO4 and carbon black (CB), prepared by two methods: solvent and fusion processing. Three nuclear relaxation processes were identified for 1H nuclei: (i) belonging to the polymer chains in the amorphous phase, loosely bound to the CB particles, whose dynamics is almost the same as for unfilled polymer, (ii) belonging to the polymer chains which are tightly attached to the CB particles, and (iii) belonging to the crystalline phase in the loose polymer chain. The paramagnetic electronic susceptibility of the composite samples, measured by EPR, was interpreted by assuming a contribution of localized spin states that follow a Curie law, and a Pauli-like contribution of delocalized spins. A significant change of the EPR linewidth was observed at 40 K, which is the temperature where the Curie and Pauli susceptibilities equally contribute to the paramagnetic electronic susceptibility. The electrical properties are very sensitive to the preparation methods of the composites, which conditions the interaction between carbon particle-carbon particle and carbon particle-polymer chain. Classical statistic models to describe the conductivity in these media were not satisfactory. © 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectra have been obtained at room temperature and at X-band in powders of SnO2 doped with Mn from 0.3 to 10% and submitted to heat treatment from 500 to 900 °C. Mn ions are probably located at particle surfaces as Mn2+, evidenced by its single EPR line which narrows by the exchange interaction effect due to particle growth observed by the BET technique. In samples doped above 1% formation Of Mn3O4 is detected on particle surfaces and a small quantity of Mn is thermally diffused into the bulk as Mn4+. Powders compacted and sintered at 1300 °C confirmed that Mn2+ ions remain at grain boundaries acting as densifying agent.

This study present a novel NO sensor made of a spin trap (iron(II)-diethyldithiocarbamate complex, FeDETC) incorporated in a latex rubber matrix and works as a trap for NO, which is detectable by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR). We explored the optimization of our sensors changing systematically two fabrication parameters: the latex rubber matrix temperature of polymerization and FeDETC concentration inside the matrix. The sensor was prepared in four different temperatures: 4, 10, 20 and 40°C. The FeDETC concentration was also varied from 0.975 to 14.8 mM. We observed a variation of the EPR signals from the sensors prepared at different conditions. We found a high stability of the EPR response from our sensor, 40 days at RT. The best sensor was made with a latex rubber matrix polymerized at 10°C and with a FeDETC concentration of 14.8 mM. In vivo tests show good biocompatibility of our sensor. © 2007 Asian Network for Scientific Information.

This study describes observation of piezoelectric response of Ba(Zr 0.10Ti 0.90.O3 ceramics modified with tungsten (BZT:2W) by the mixed oxide method. According to X ray diffraction analysis, the ceramics are free of secondary phases. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses reveals the absence of segregates in the grain boundaries indicates the high solubility of WO3 in the BZT matrix. The dielectric permittivity measured at a frequency of 10 KHz was equal to 6500 with dieletric loss of 0.15. A typical hysteresis loop was observed at room temperature. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) analyses reveals that substitution of W6+ by Ti4+ causes distortion in the crystal structure changing lattice parameter. Polarization reversal was investigated by applying dc voltage through a conductive tip during the area scanning. Piezoelectric force microscopy images reveals that in-plane response may not change its sign upon polarization switching, while the out-of-plane response does. Nowadays, the research for new and better antimicrobial compounds is an important field due to the increase of immunocompromised patients, the use of invasive medical procedures and extensive surgeries, among others, that can affect the incidence of infections. Another big problem associated is the occurrence of drug-resistant microbial strains that impels a ceaseless search for new antimicrobial agents. In this context, a series of heterocyclic- sulfonamide complexes with Co(II) was synthesized and characterized with the aim of obtaining new antimicrobial compounds. The structural characterization was performed using different spectroscopic methods (UV-Vis, IR, and EPR). In spite of the fact that the general stoichiometry for all the complexes was Co(sulfonamide)2·nH2O, the coordination atoms were different depending on the coordinated sulfonamide. The crystal structure of [Co(sulfamethoxazole)2(H2O)2]·H 2O was obtained by X-ray diffraction showing that Co(II) is in a slightly tetragonal distorted octahedron where sulfamethoxazole molecules act as a head-to-tail bridges between two cobalt atoms, forming polymeric chains. Besides, the activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, one of the responsible for tuberculosis, and the cytotoxicity on J774A.1 macrophage cells were evaluated. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.
