The aim of this research was to estimate the skeletal growth and development by observingradiographically the morphological changes of the first, second and third cervical vertebrae, according to the method proposed by Hassel &Farman32 (1995) in patients who were going through the outbreak of pubertal growth. The radiographic inspection of the cervical vertebrae was performed by means of cephalometric radiographs and the outbreak of pubertal growth was identified through the events of ossification of the hand and wrist. For that purpose, we selected thecephalometric radiographs and hand•wrist radiographs of 110 Brazilianleukoderms, male and female,with chronological age ranging from 8 to 14,6 years old for the girls and from 9,5 to 15,4 years old for the boys.The results showed that there was a statistically significant correlation between the maturation indicators of the cervical vertebrae and the patients who were going through the outbreak of pubertal growth. The conclusion was that the radiographic evalution of the changes of the cervical vertebrae, in the cephalometric radiographs, is an alternative parameter, which is reliable and practical in the skeletal evalution, and the it completes the range of information that must be obtained from the patient under orthodontic treatment and that it can, circumstantially, replace other methods of evalution

This article aims to investigate the construction of reflective abstraction and relate it to the construction of social knowledge. So, two methodological tools were applied to 60 students aged between ten and 16 years: a) evidence of the construction of surfaces and perimeters b) clinical interview about the origins of Earth and life. The main results show that participants were presented at more elementary levels of constuction of reflective abstraction and contruction of social knowledge despite the advanced age and schooling. Statistical analysis revealed a highly significant relationship between the constuction of abstraction and social knowledge.

Abusive consumption of alcohol leads to several negative consequences to health and quality of life, as it increases the frequency of diseases that cause death or functional disabilities. The rates of patients admitted to hospital due to physical problems stemming from alcohol abuse are high. This study aimed at identifying patients according to variables age, gender and education level as well as at evaluating the prevalence of CAGE-positive patients and morbidity due to CID-10 (International Classification of Diseases) by the World Health Organization. It is a cross-sectional, observational, exploratory, descriptive and quantitative study. It was conducted at the Botucatu School of Medicine University Hospital (HC) from July to September 2010, at the Internal Medicine ward. This ward aggregates 5 specialties, namely, Cardiology, Hematology, General Medicine, Nephrology and Gastroclinic. Presently, it has 36 beds, of which four are for Intensive Care Therapy (ICT). Three hundred and ten medical charts were analyzed for identification of morbidities and of variables age, gender and schooling. A closed semistructured questionnaire including, among other questions, the CAGE test was applied to each individual. The CAGE test is a questionnaire that comprises four questions and considers that one who answers two or more of such questions affirmatively is a suspected case of alcoholism. The total population studied included 310 patients. Indexes of 60% (186) male and of 40% (124) female patients were found. As regards age range, a population with a higher prevalence of individuals from 51 to 70 years old (41%) was observed. The main education indexes were: incomplete Elementary School: 23.22% (72), complete Elementary School: 21.61% (67), incomplete Secondary School: 18.40% (57) and Illiteracy: 17.74% (55). This paper aims to contribute on (re)awakening new and/or known discussions about childhood and the relation school and family, linking the debate to some confrontations that could be developed at school environment. The paper presents the following topics: 1) Childhood and Education: Family and school relationship, 2) Childhood and schooling: the child in school. This paper also seeks to discuss childhood specificities and educational practices in family and at school,allowing the construction of a school project that interweaves school cultures, childhood cultures and the families in the contemporary society

This study's aim was to verify coping strategies among children aged between 7 and 12 years old who will be experiencing surgery and the potential relationship of coping strategies with sociodemographic variables, stress in children and in companions, and the child's prior experience with surgery. A total of 58 children hospitalized and waiting for elective surgeries responded to the Assessment Instrument of Coping to Hospitalization and an instrument to assess stress. The companion received a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Lipp Stress Symptom Inventory. Problem-solving strategies and distraction were the most frequent strategies used, while social withdrawal and opposition were the least frequent. Girls and children of stressful parents used emotion regulation strategies with significantly more frequency. Likewise, greater cognitive restructuring was observed in older children and those with prior experience with surgeries. The results show the need to consider the studied variables when developing pre-operative preparation programs.
