This paper is concerned with the controllability and stabilizability problem for control systems described by a time-varyinglinear abstract differential equation with distributed delay in the state variables. An approximate controllability propertyis established, and for periodic systems, the stabilization problem is studied. Assuming that the semigroup of operatorsassociated with the uncontrolled and non delayed equation is compact, and using the characterization of the asymptoticstability in terms of the spectrum of the monodromy operator of the uncontrolled system, it is shown that the approximatecontrollability property is a sufficient condition for the existence of a periodic feedback control law that stabilizes thesystem. The result is extended to include some systems which are asymptotically periodic. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley &Sons, Ltd.

Using the sol-gel process, organic-inorganic hybrid coatings were synthesized by incorporation of different concentrations of functionalized carbon nanotubes, to improve their mechanical strength and thermal resistance without changing its passivation character. The siloxane-PMMA hybrids were prepared by radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with 3-methacryloxipropiltrimethoxisilane (MPTS) using the thermal initiator benzoyl peroxide (BPO), followed by acid catalyzed hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). The analysis of pristine and functionalized carbon nanotubes was carried out using Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Raman Spectroscopy. Structural analysis of hybrids was performed by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Atomic Force Microscopy and Raman Spectroscopy. For analysis of mechanical strength and thermal stability were performed mechanical compression tests and thermogravimetric analysis, respectively. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy was used to evaluate the corrosion resistance in saline environment. The results showed an effective functionalization of carbon nanotubes with carboxyl groups and conservation of its structure. The hybrids showed high siloxane network connectivity and roughness of approximately 0.3 nm. The incorporation of carbon nanotubes in the hybrid matrix did not change significantly their thermal stability. Samples containing carbon nanotubes exhibit good corrosion resistance (on the order of MΩ in saline environment), but the lack of complete dispersion of carbon nanotubes in the hybrid, resulted in a loss of mechanical and corrosion resistance compared to hybrid matrix.

This paper focus to apply, to discuss and to propose the Maximum Harvesting Method improvement, regarding the method application, for household rainwater harvesting systems. For this purpose, the rainwater was considered to supply the flush toilet demand in a household for 3, 4, and 5 inhabitants. The 80, 120 and 200m2 catchments areas and the 0, 1, 2 and 4mm first flushes discharges were also considered. Further, the improvement suggestions for cistern volume calculus and volume/level dynamics variation in a period were presented and the results were compared applying the Simulation Analyses Method. The results indicate that the Maximum Harvesting Method could be applied and that the improvement proposal can be used to determinate the cistern volume as well to analyze the dynamic behavior of volume/level, constituting by itself a single tool to assist rainwater harvesting systems designers.

O Karatê-Do é uma das artes marciais mais conhecidas e praticadas em todo o mundo. Esta arte marcial, nascida na ilha de Okinawa, no Japão, passou por profundas transformações ao longo do tempo até alcançar a configuração que tem hoje em dia, assim como toda a sociedade japonesa. Mais do que uma simples forma de luta, o Karate-Do se tornou um caminho, uma doutrina a ser seguida por seus praticantes, ensinando valores e conceitos para a construção da personalidade de indivíduo da sociedade. Através da esportivização desta arte, assim como ocorreu com o Judô e outras formas de combate, e também através da crescente popularização e exposição das artes marciais no cenário mundial pelos chamados eventos de artes marciais (MMA), os valores e atributos intrínsecos ao Karatê e a outras artes marciais não têm sido transmitidos aos alunos. Os treinos visam apenas golpes e ataques utilizados em competições, supervalorizando a técnica em detrimento as filosofias que são a base do Karatê. O objetivo deste estudo é analisar enquanto prática formadora em seu contexto histórico e cultural o Karatê-Do. Neste sentido, procuraremos explorar as características singulares desta modalidade de arte marcial que contribuem para a formação ética e moral de seus praticantes
