We consider a class of functional differential equations subject to perturbations, which vary in time, and we study the exponential stability of solutions of these equations using the theory of generalized ordinary differential equations and Lyapunov functionals. We introduce the concept of variational exponential stability for generalized ordinary differential equations and we develop the theory in this direction by establishing conditions for the trivial solutions of generalized ordinary differential equations to be exponentially stable. Then, we apply the results to get corresponding ones for impulsive functional differential equations. We also present an example of a delay differential equation with Perron integrable right-hand side where we apply our result.

We discuss the one-sided Green's function, associated with an initial value problem and the two-sided Green's function related to a boundary value problem. We present a specific calculation associated with a differential equation with constant coefficients. For both problems, we also present the Laplace integral transform as another methodology to calculate these Green's functions and conclude which is the most convenient one. An incursion in the so-called fractional Green's function is also presented. As an example, we discuss the isotropic harmonic oscillator.

A time reversal symmetric regularized electron exchange model was used to elastic scattering, target elastic Ps excitations and target inelastic excitation of hydrogen in a five state coupled model. A singlet Ps-H-S-wave resonance at 4.01 eV of width 0.15 eV and a P-wave resonance at 5.08 eV of width 0.004 eV were obtained using this model. The effect on the convergence of the coupled-channel scheme due to the inclusion of the excited Ps and H states was also analyzed.

In order to refine the solution given by the classical logistic equation and extend its range of applications in the study of tumor dynamics, we propose and solve a generalization of this equation, using the so-called Fractional Calculus, i.e., we replace the ordinary derivative of order 1, in one version of the usual equation, by a non-integer derivative of order 0 < α < 1, and recover the classical solution as a particular case. Finally, we analyze the applicability of this model to describe the growth of cancer tumors.

In this article we study the existence of shock wave solutions for systems of partial differential equations of hydrodynamics with viscosity in one space dimension in the context of Colombeau's theory of generalized functions. This study uses the equality in the strict sense and the association of generalized functions (that is the weak equality). The shock wave solutions are given in terms of generalized functions that have the classical Heaviside step function as macroscopic aspect. This means that solutions are sought in the form of sequences of regularizations to the Heaviside function that have to satisfy part of the equations in the strict sense and part of the equations in the sense of association.

A direct version of the boundary element method (BEM) is developed to model the stationary dynamic response of reinforced plate structures, such as reinforced panels in buildings, automobiles, and airplanes. The dynamic stationary fundamental solutions of thin plates and plane stress state are used to transform the governing partial differential equations into boundary integral equations (BIEs). Two sets of uncoupled BIEs are formulated, respectively, for the in-plane state ( membrane) and for the out-of-plane state ( bending). These uncoupled systems are joined to formamacro-element, in which membrane and bending effects are present. The association of these macro-elements is able to simulate thin-walled structures, including reinforced plate structures. In the present formulation, the BIE is discretized by continuous and/or discontinuous linear elements. Four displacement integral equations are written for every boundary node. Modal data, that is, natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes of reinforced plates, are obtained from information contained in the frequency response functions (FRFs). A specific example is presented to illustrate the versatility of the proposed methodology. Different configurations of the reinforcements are used to simulate simply supported and clamped boundary conditions for the plate structures. The procedure is validated by comparison with results determined by the finite element method (FEM).

The number of zeros in (- 1, 1) of the Jacobi function of second kind Q(n)((alpha, beta)) (x), alpha, beta > - 1, i.e. The second solution of the differential equation(1 - x(2))y (x) + (beta - alpha - (alpha + beta + 2)x)y' (x) + n(n + alpha + beta + 1)y(x) = 0,is determined for every n is an element of N and for all values of the parameters alpha > - 1 and beta > - 1. It turns out that this number depends essentially on alpha and beta as well as on the specific normalization of the function Q(n)((alpha, beta)) (x). Interlacing properties of the zeros are also obtained. As a consequence of the main result, we determine the number of zeros of Laguerre's and Hermite's functions of second kind. In this paper, we study the travelling wave reductions for certain (2 + 1)- and (3 + 1)-dimensional physically important nonlinear evolutionary equations by using the recently proposed Homogenous Balance Method (HBM). Through this analysis we explore certain new solutions for the equations we have studied. (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier B.V.

We study the existence of homoclic solutions for reversible Hamiltonian systems taking the family of differential equations u(iv) + au - u +f(u, b) = 0 as a model, where fis an analytic function and a, b real parameters. These equations are important in several physical situations such as solitons and in the existence of finite energy stationary states of partial differential equations, but no assumptions of any kind of discrete symmetry is made and the analysis here developed can be extended to others Hamiltonian systems and successfully employed in situations where standard methods fail. We reduce the problem of computing these orbits to that of finding the intersection of the unstable manifold with a suitable set and then apply it to concrete situations. We also plot the homoclinic values configuration in parameters space, giving a picture of the structural distribution and a geometrical view of homoclinic bifurcations. We derive the soliton matrices corresponding to an arbitrary number of higher-order normal zeros for the matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem of arbitrary matrix dimension, thus giving the complete solution to the problem of higher-order solitons. Our soliton matrices explicitly give all higher-order multisoliton solutions to the nonlinear partial differential equations integrable through the matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem. We have applied these general results to the three-wave interaction system, and derived new classes of higher-order soliton and two-soliton solutions, in complement to those from our previous publication [Stud. Appl. Math. 110, 297 (2003)], where only the elementary higher-order zeros were considered. The higher-order solitons corresponding to nonelementary zeros generically describe the simultaneous breakup of a pumping wave (u(3)) into the other two components (u(1) and u(2)) and merger of u(1) and u(2) waves into the pumping u(3) wave. The two-soliton solutions corresponding to two simple zeros generically describe the breakup of the pumping u(3) wave into the u(1) and u(2) components, and the reverse process. In the nongeneric cases, these two-soliton solutions could describe the elastic interaction of the u(1) and u(2) waves, thus reproducing previous results obtained by Zakharov and Manakov [Zh. Eksp. Teor. Fiz. 69, 1654 (1975)] and Kaup [Stud. Appl. Math. 55, 9 (1976)]. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics.

A simple mathematical model is developed to explain the appearance of oscillations in the dispersal of larvae from the food source in experimental populations of certain species of blowflies. The life history of the immature stage in these flies, and in a number of other insects, is a system with two populations, one of larvae dispersing on the soil and the other of larvae that burrow in the soil to pupate. The observed oscillations in the horizontal distribution of buried pupae at the end of the dispersal process are hypothesized to be a consequence of larval crowding at a given point in the pupation substrate. It is assumed that dispersing larvae are capable of perceiving variations in density of larvae buried at a given point in the substrate of pupation, and that pupal density may influence pupation of dispersing larvae. The assumed interaction between dispersing larvae and the larvae that are burrowing to pupate is modeled using the concept of non-local effects. Numerical solutions of integro-partial differential equations developed to model density-dependent immature dispersal demonstrate that variation in the parameter that governs the non-local interaction between dispersing and buried larvae induces oscillations in the final horizontal distribution of pupae.
