In this study, the short- and long-range chemical environments of Cu dopant in TiO2 photocatalyst have been investigated. The Cu-doped and undoped TiO2 specimens were prepared by the sol-gel approach employing CuSO4·5H2O and Ti(O-iPr)4 precursors and subjecting the dried gels to thermal treatment at 400 and 500 C. The photocatalytic activity, investigated by methylene blue degradation under sunlight irradiation, showed a significantly higher efficiency of Cu-doped samples than that of pure TiO2. The X-ray diffraction results showed the presence of anatase phase for samples prepared at 400 and 500 C. No crystalline CuSO4 phase was detected below 500 C. It was also found that doping decreases the crystallite size in the (004) and (101) directions. Infrared spectroscopy results indicated that the chemical environment of sulfate changes as a function of thermal treatment, and UV-vis spectra showed that the band gap decreases with thermal treatment and Cu doping, showing the lowest value for the 400 C sample. X-ray absorption fine structure measurements and analysis refinements revealed that even after thermal treatment and photocatalytic assays, the Cu2+ local order is similar to that of CuSO4, containing, however, oxygen vacancies. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data, limited to the near surface region of the catalyst, evidenced, besides CuSO4, the presence of Cu1+ and CuO phases, indicating the active role of Cu in the TiO2 lattice. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

Oxidation state and coordination of transition metal cations seems to be hard to assess when considering multiple cations, each one with different possible oxidation states. In fact, this is the case of the spineltype double oxides family. High resolution K beta X-ray fluorescence spectra were measured in Mn(2-x)V(1+4)O4 (x=0 and 1/3) spinels-type double oxides in order to determine the oxidation state and coordination of V and Mn cations. The relative intensity of radiative Auger effect KM2,3M4,5 to the total intensity and the integral absolute difference value were used as reference parameters for the characterization of Mn oxidation states. The coordination of Mn ions was inferred by the intensity of the K beta(5) line. In the case of V compounds, it was used as the intensity of the line K beta' relative to the total area of K beta region. The obtained results were further compared with X-ray absorption spectra analysis, showing good agreements regarding the oxidation state characterization. However, there were found some discrepancies in coordination, due to customary oversimplifications in the K beta(5) line origin. The obtained results might represent valuable and useful data for chemical scopes of characterizing spineltype oxides family. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Time-resolved X-ray absorption-fine structure (Quick-XAFS) and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopies were combined for monitoring simultaneously the time evolution of Zn-based species and ZnO quantum dot (Qdot) formation and growth during the sol-gel synthesis from zinc oxy-acetate precursor solution. The time evolution of the nanostructural features of colloidal suspension was independently monitored in situ by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). In both cases, the monitoring was initialized just after the addition of NaOH solution (B = [OH]/[Zn] = 0.5) to the precursor solution at 40 degrees C. Combined time-resolved Quick-XAFS and UV-Vis data showed that the formation of ZnO colloids from the zinc oxy-acetate consumption achieves a quasi-steady-state chemical equilibrium in less than 200s. Afterwards, the comparison of the ZnO Qdots size and Guinier gyration radius evidences a limited aggregation process coupled to the Qdots growth. The analysis of the experimental results demonstrates that the nanocrystal coalescence and Ostwald ripening control the kinetics of the Qdot growth.

The compounds [Fe(ch)(CO)(2)PP3] (1) (ch = chalcone) and [Fe(sba)(CO)(2)PPh3] (2) (sba = sorbic acid) were prepared by irradiating the tetracarbonyltriphenylphosphineiron(0) complex in benzene in the presence of ch or sba. The compounds were characterized by infrared and P-31 NMR spectroscopies. Their electrochemical behavior was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and the results suggest that their oxidations occur by more than one electrochemical step, producing free ch and sba, free PPh3 and solvated Fe(III). It was observed that sba ligand contributes more effectively to the stabilization of metal center in these complexes, the X-ray crystal and molecular structures of 1 and 2 were determined; it was shown that the Fe atom adopts a distorted octahedral coordinated geometry in which three of the sites are occupied by the ch or sba ligand. The [Fe(ch)(CO)(2)PPh3] complex is a monomer and the unit cell of complex 2 contains exist two identical and crystallographically independent molecules of [Fe(sba)(CO)(2)PPh3] which are linked by short hydrogen bonds O-H . . .O (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier B.V. The triply chloro-bridged binuclear complexes [Ph3X=O...H...O=XPh3][Ru2Cl7(XPh3)(2)].0.5(CH2Cl2) (H2O) (X = As or P) were obtained from [RuCl3(XPh3)(2)DMA].DMA (DMA = dimethylacetamide) CH2Cl2/Et2O solution. The structures were characterized by X-ray diffraction studies. The complexes are formed from two Ru atoms bridged by three chloride anions. The two ruthenium atoms are also coordinated to two non-bridging Cl atoms and an AsPh3 or PPh3 ligand respectively. As an interesting feature, the cations of these complexes are protons, trapped in a very short hydrogen bond between two triphenylarsine or triphenylphosphine oxide molecules.

The conformational features of three 4-substituted-3-4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones were investigated by computational and single crystal X-ray crystallographic studies. The geometries were optimized using semiempirical (AM1) and first principle calculations (B3LYP/6-31G**) methods, the rotational barriers for important functional groups were studied. In all structures the pyrimidinone rings are in a more or less distorted boat conformation. The phenyl and the furane rings are almost perpendicular to the best least-squares plane through the dihydropyrimidinone ring.

Nominally pure Gd2O3 C-form structure from basic carbonate fine spherical particles and its differences concerning the XRD data among literature patterns using Rietveld method is reported. Gd2O3: Eu3+ from basic carbonate and Gd2O3 from oxalate were also investigated. All samples, except the one from oxalate precursor, are narrow sized, 100-200 nm. Only non-doped Gd2O3 from basic carbonate presents XRD data with smaller d(hkl) values than the literature ones. From Rietveld refinement, non-doped Gd2O3 from basic carbonate has the smallest crystallite size and from oxalate shows the greatest one. Also, the unit cell parameters indicate a plan contraction of the Gd2O3 from basic carbonate. The presence of Eu3+ increases crystallite size when basic carbonate precursor is used to prepare Gd2O3 and avoids plan contraction. The structural differences observed among Gd2O3 samples obtained are related to the type of precursor and to the presence or not of doping ion. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. (USA). All rights reserved.

In this paper, synthesis, characterization and antimycobacterial properties of a new water-soluble complex identified as silver-mandelate are described. Elemental and thermal analyses are consistent with the formula [Ag(C6H5C(OH)COO)](n). The polymeric structure was determined by single X-ray diffraction and the two-dimensional structure is based on the bis(carboxylate-O,O') dimer [Ag-O, 2.237(3), 2.222(3) angstrom]. The structure is extended along both the b and c axes through two oxygen atoms of a bidentate alpha-hydroxyl-carboxylate residue [Ag-OH(hydroxyl), 2.477(3) angstrom; Ag-O(carboxylate), 2.502(3) angstrom; O-Ag-O, 63.94(9)degrees]. A strong d(10)-d(10) interaction was observed between two silver atoms. The Ag...Ag distance is 2.8307(15) angstrom. The NMR C-13 spectrum in D2O shows that coordination of the ligand to Ag(l) occurs through the carboxylate group in solution. Potentiometric titration shows that only species with a molar metaHigand ratio of 2:2 are formed in aqueous solution. The mandelate complex and the silver-glycolate, silver-malate and silver-hydrogen-tartarate complexes were tested against three types of mycobacteria, Mycobacterium avium, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium kansasii, and their minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values were determined. The results show that the four complexes are potential candidates for antiseptic or disinfectant drugs for discharged secretions of patients affected with tuberculosis.
