Biofertilizers are organic products usually obtained from an anaerobic process, evaluated mainly as phytoprotectors for agriculture, although they can improve fruit production. By this way, a field experiment was carried out in Remigio County, Paraiba State, Brazil, to evaluate the effects of two bovine biofertilizers on yield, medium mass and quality of papaya fruits (Carica papaya L.), 'Baixinho de Santa Amalia cultivar. Treatments were distributed in a randomized complete blocks design with three replications and 15 plants in each parcel, in a 2 x 5 factorial arrangement, with two biofertilizers: simple (water and fresh bovine manure) and supermagro (water, fresh bovine manure, macro and micronutrients and a protein mix), applied in soil under liquid form at five volumes, as follows: 0.0; 0.5; 1.0; 1.5; e 2.0 L cave(-1). There was no statistical difference between biofertilizers for fruit mass, yield and external and internal fruit quality variables, while between volumes differences were registered for both biofertilizers. The results, except for fruit firmness, registered positive effects of the biofertilizers on 'Baixinho de Santa Amalia' papaya cultivar in relation to yield and physical and chemical fruit quality.

A new lead fluoroborate glass (PbO-PbF2-B2O3) doped with ytterbium (Yb:PbFB) is presented. Samples with different concentrations of Yb3+ were produced and had their emission cross-sections, fluorescence lifetimes and minimum pump intensities determined. They have high refractive index of 2.2 and a density of 4.4 g/cm(3). For a doping level of 1.153x10(20) ions/cm(3), the fluorescence lifetime, after excitation at 968 nm, is 0.81 ms, which is comparable to Yb:tellurite laser glass. Also, an emission band at 1022 nm is measured with emission cross-section of approximately 1.07x10(-20) cm(2) and fluorescence effective linewidth of 60 nm, which is comparable to Yb:phosphate laser glass. High density poly(ethylene) has been submitted to thermal degradation alone, and in the presence of silicoaluminophosphate SAPO-37. The processes were carried out in a reactor connected on line to a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer in order to analyze the evolved products. Polymer degradation was also evaluated by thermogravimetry, from room temperature until 800 degreesC, under nitrogen dynamic atmosphere, with multiple heating rates. From TG curves, the activation energy related to degradation process was calculated using the Flynn and Wall multiple heating rate kinetic model for pure polymer (PE) and for polymer in the presence of catalyst (PE/S37). SAPO-37 showed good selectivity for low molecular mass hydrocarbons in PE catalytic degradation.

The SLD Barrel Cherenkov Ring Imaging Detector was fully operational in the 1992 physics data run. The electron drift velocity and magnetic field deflection of electron trajectories have been measured. Cherenkov rings have been observed from both the liquid and gas radiators. The number and the resolution of the angle of Cherenkov photons have been measured to be approximately equal to design specifications.

Strong interest in developing technology for visual information. stimulates research for thin film electroluminescent devices. Here, for the first time, we report that thulium- and terbium-doped zinc-oxide films are suitable for electroluminescence applications. Two different devices were assembled as lTO/LiF/ZnO:RE/LiF/Al or ITO/SiO2/ZnO:RE/SiO2/Al, where ZnO:RE is a film of zinc oxide containing 10 at% of Tb3+ or Tm3+. Electroluminescence spectra show that besides a broad emission band with maximum around 650 nm assigned to ZnO, also emission lines from Tb3+ at 484 nm (D-5(4) -> F-7(6)), 543 nm (D-5(4) -> F-7(6)), and 589 nm (D-5(4) -> F-7(4)), or from Tm3+ at 478 nm ((1)G(4) -> H-3(6)), and 511 mn (D-1(2) -> H-3(5)) were detected. Intensity of emission as function of applied voltage and current-voltage characteristic are shown and discussed. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Studies show the importance of knowing the variability of soil attributes for a more efficient management. This work was carried out to evaluate the spatial variability of the chemical attributes of an Ultisol, cultivated with Brachiaria decumbens pasture in Alegre - ES. Soil samples were collected at a depth of 00-0.2 m, at the crossing points of a regular grid with 10 m-intervals, comprising a total of 64 points. Data were submitted to descriptive statistics, geostatistics and kriging interpolation analysis. The coefficient of variation was low for pH, high for Al and m%, and medium the other attributes. The attributes pH, P, H+Al and m% presented strong dependence, and the other moderate dependence. The attributes presented a spatial dependence structure, allowing their mapping by geostatistics techniques.

Eutherian mammals share a common ancestor that evolved into two main placental types, i.e., hemotrophic (e.g., human and mouse) and histiotrophic (e.g., farm animals), which differ in invasiveness. Pregnancies initiated with assisted reproductive techniques (ART) in farm animals are at increased risk of failure; these losses were associated with placental defects, perhaps due to altered gene expression. Developmentally regulated genes in the placenta seem highly phylogenetically conserved, whereas those expressed later in pregnancy are more species-specific. To elucidate differences between hemotrophic and epitheliochorial placentae, gene expression data were compiled from microarray studies of bovine placental tissues at various stages of pregnancy. Moreover, an in silico subtractive library was constructed based on homology of bovine genes to the database of zebrafish - a nonplacental vertebrate. In addition, the list of placental preferentially expressed genes for the human and mouse were collected using bioinformatics tools (Tissue-specific Gene Expression and Regulation [TiGER] - for humans, and tissue-specific genes database (TiSGeD) - for mice and humans). Humans, mice, and cattle shared 93 genes expressed in their placentae. Most of these were related to immune function (based on analysis of gene ontology). Cattle and women shared expression of 23 genes, mostly related to hormonal activity, whereas mice and women shared 16 genes (primarily sexual differentiation and glycoprotein biology). Because the number of genes expressed by the placentae of both cattle and mice were similar (based on cluster analysis), we concluded that both cattle and mice were suitable models to study the biology of the human placenta. This paper describes the frequency of occurrence and reproductive patterns of the tree mangrove crab Aratus pisonii. Monthly samples were taken from January 1993 to June 1994 in an estuarine mangrove from Ubatuba region, Brazil. A total of 1 078 animals, 489 males and 589 females (131 ovigerous females) were collected. Carapace width ranged from 4.2 to 25.9 mm. A summer reproductive peak followed by a recruitment juvenile pulse was verified. Females were more abundant than males in the intermediate size classes. The sex-ratio in several months was biased towards females, suggesting a poligynous population and migration of females to mangrove fringes at the time of incubation and spawning.

In recent years, many researchers in the field of biomedical sciences have made successful use of mathematical models to study, in a quantitative way, a multitude of phenomena such as those found in disease dynamics, control of physiological systems, optimization of drug therapy, economics of the preventive medicine and many other applications. The availability of good dynamic models have been providing means for simulation and design of novel control strategies in the context of biological events. This work concerns a particular model related to HIV infection dynamics which is used to allow a comparative evaluation of schemes for treatment of AIDS patients. The mathematical model adopted in this work was proposed by Nowak & Bangham, 1996 and describes the dynamics of viral concentration in terms of interaction with CD4 cells and the cytotoxic T lymphocytes, which are responsible for the defense of the organism. Two conceptually distinct techniques for drug therapy are analyzed: Open Loop Treatment, where a priori fixed dosage is prescribed and Closed Loop Treatment, where the doses are adjusted according to results obtained by laboratory analysis. Simulation results show that the Closed Loop Scheme can achieve improved quality of the treatment in terms of reduction in the viral load and quantity of administered drugs, but with the inconvenience related to the necessity of frequent and periodic laboratory analysis.

A variational inequality problem (VIP) satisfying a constraint qualification can be reduced to a mixed complementarity problem (MCP). Monotonicity of the VIP implies that the MCP is also monotone. Introducing regularizing perturbations, a sequence of strictly monotone mixed complementarity problems is generated. It is shown that, if the original problem is solvable, the sequence of computable inexact solutions of the strictly monotone MCP's is bounded and every accumulation point is a solution. Under an additional condition on the precision used for solving each subproblem, the sequence converges to the minimum norm solution of the MCP. Copyright © 2000 by Marcel Dekker, Inc.
