Synthesis, spectroscopic characterization and thermal behavior of pyrazolate-bridged palladium complexes [Pd(mu-Pz)(2)](n) (1), [Pd(mu-mPz)(2)](n) (2), [Pd(mu-dmPz)(2)](n) (3), [Pd(mu-IPz)(2)](n) (4) {pyrazolate (Pz(-)), 4-methylpyrazolate (mPz(-)), 3,5-dimethylpyrazolate (dmPz(-)), 4-iodopyrazolate (IPz(-))} have been described in this work. The exobidentate coordination mode of pyrazolato ligands in 1-4 was inferred on basis of IR spectroscopic evidences. TG investigations indicated that the introduction of substituents at the 4 position in the pyrazolyl moiety into coordination polymers do not affect significantly their thermal stability, whereas at the 3 and 5 position reduced the stability of the main chain. Metal palladium was the final product of the thermal decompositions, which was identified by X-ray powder diffraction.

The thermal behavior of simple and mixed pyrazolyl complexes [PdCl2(phmPz)(2)] (1),[Pd(N-3)(2)(phmPz)(2)] (2), [Pd(SCN)(2)(phmPz)(2)] (3), and [Pd(N-3)(SCN)(phmPz)(2)] (4) (phmPz: 1-phenyl-3-methylpyrazole) has been investigated by means of thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). From the initial decomposition temperatures, the thermal stability of the complexes can be ordered in the sequence: 4 < 2 < 3 < 1. The final products of the thermal decompositions were characterized as metallic palladium (Pd-0). (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The cyanate-bridged cyclopalladated compound [Pd(N,C-dmba)(mu-NCO)](2) (1) (dmba = PhCH2NMe2) reacts in CH2Cl2 with 2,3-lutidine (2,3- lut), 3,4-lutidine (3,4-lut), 2,2'-bipyridine (2,2'-bipy) and 4,4'-bipyridine (4,4'-bipy), to give [Pd(N, C-dmba)(NCO)(2,3-lut)] (2), [Pd(N,C-dmba)(NCO)(3,4-lut)] (3), [{Pd(N,C-dmba)(NCO)}(2)(mu-2,2'-bipy)] .CH2Cl2 (4) and [{Pd(N,C-dmba)(NCO)}(2)(mu-4,4'-bipy)] . CH2Cl2 (5), respectively. The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, i.r. and n. m. r. spectroscopy and also by t.g.a. The i.r. spectra of (2 - 5) display typical bands of monodentate N-bonded cyanate groups, whereas the n. m. r. data of (4) are consistent with the presence of a bridging 2,2'-bipyridine ligand. Complex (4) decomposes slowly in acetone. One of the products formed, [Pd(H2CCOMe) Cl(2,2'-bipy)] (6), was characterized by X-ray diffraction. As inferred from the t.g.a., the thermal stability decreases in the order: [{Pd(N,C-dmba)(NCO)}(2) (mu-4,4'-bipy)]. CH2Cl2 (5) > [Pd(N,C-dmba)(2,3-lut)( NCO)] (2) = [Pd(N, C-dmba)(3,4-lut)(NCO)] (3) > [{Pd(N,C-dmba)(NCO)}(2)(mu- 2,2'-bipy)] .CH2Cl2 (4). According to thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction patterns compounds (2 - 3) decompose into metallic palladium Pd(0), whereas (4 - 5) decompose with the formation of PdO. The X-ray crystal and molecular structure of [Pd(N, C-dmba)( NCO)(2,3-lut)] (2) was determined. The lutidine unit is perpendicular to the coordination plane.

This work deals with the synthesis and thermal decomposition of complexes of general formula: Ln(beta-dik)(3)L (where Ln=Tb(+3), beta-dik=4,4,4-trifluoro-1-phenyl-1,3butanedione(btfa) and L=1,10-fenantroline(phen) or 2,2-bipiridine(bipy). The powders were characterized by melting point, FTIR spectroscopy, LTV-visible, elemental analysis, scanning differential calorimeter(DSC) and thermogravimetry(TG). The TG/DSC curves were obtained simultaneously in a system DSC-TGA, under nitrogen atmosphere. The experimental conditions were: 0.83 ml.s(-1) carrier gas flow, 2.0 +/- 0.5 mg samples and 10 degrees C.min(-1) heating rate. The CHN elemental analysis of the Tb(btfa)(3)bipy and Tb(btfa)(3)phen complexes, are in good agreement with the expected values. The IR spectra evinced that the metal ion is coordinated to the ligands via C=O and C-N groups. The TG/DTG/DSC curves of the complexes show that they decompose before melting. The profiles of the thermal decomposition of the Tb(btfa)3phen and Tb(btfa)3bipy showed six and five decomposition stages, respectively. Our data suggests that the thermal stability of the complexes under investigation followed the order: Tb(btfa)(3)phen < Tb(btfa)(3)bipy.

The effect of acetylacetone (acac) complexing ligand on the formation and growth of tin oxide-based nanoparticles during thermohydrolysis at 70 degreesC of a tin precursor SnCl4-n(acac)(n) (0 less than or equal to n less than or equal to 2) solution was analyzed by in situ small-angle X-ray scattering. A. transparent and stable sol was obtained after 2 h of thermohydrolysis at 70 degreesC, allowing the quantitative determination of the particle volume distribution function and its variation with the reaction time. The number of colloidal particles for equivalent thermohydrolysis temperature and time decreases as the [acac]/[Sn] ratio in initial solution increases from 0.5 to 6. Instead, the amount of soluble species remaining in solution increases for increasing [acac]/[Sn] ratio within the same range. This indicates that increasing amounts of Sn-acetylacetone complexes partially prevent the hydrolysis and consequent formation of colloidal particles. The N-2 adsorption isotherm characterization of freeze-dried powders demonstrates that the average pore size is approximately equal to the average size (approximate to9 Angstrom) of the colloidal primary particles in the sol, and that the porosity and surface area (approximate to200 m(2) g(-1)) are independent of the acac content in the initial solution.

This work describes the synthesis and characterization of two novel Pd(II) pyrazolyl complexes of the type [PdX2(HdmPz)(2)](n) {X=SCN- (1), N-3(-) (2); HdmPz=3,5-dimethylpyrazole} that self-assemble through N-H...NCS or N-H...NNN hydrogen bonds to yield infinite one-dimensional chains, as confirmed by single crystal X-ray study on 1. The expected solid state polymeric structure for 2 is slowly broken up in CHCl3 Solution, leading to an equilibrium mixture of cis and trans-[Pd(N-3)(2)(HdmPz)(2)] monomers, as demonstrated by time-dependent IR and NMR studies. Mononuclear pyrazolyl Pd(II) complexes of the type [PdX2(phmPz)(2)] (X = Cl-, N-3(-)) have been prepared. The 1-phenyl-3-methylpyrazole displaces acetonitrile from [PdCl2(CH3CN)(2)] to form [PdCl2(PhMPz)(2)] (phmPz = 1-phenyl-3-methylpyrazole) (1). [Pd(N-3)(2)(PhmPz)(2)] (2) could be obtained by metathesis from [PdCl2(CH3CN)(2)] or by substitution of the chloride in (1) by the azide ion. Both complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, H-1 and C-13 NMR and by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The coordination geometry around Pd(II) in these complexes is nearly square-planar, with the ligands in a trans configuration.

Linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) with different branching contents were prepared from ethylene, without the addition of alpha-olefin comonomer, using a combination of catalyst precursors {Tp(Ms)}NiCl (1) (Tp(Ms) = hydridotris(3-mesitylpyrazol-1-yl)) and Cp2ZrCl2 (2) activated with MAO/TMA (1:1) in toluene at 0degreesC and by varying the nickel loading mole fraction (x(Ni)). The polymerization results showed that the turnover frequencies are strongly dependent on the x(Ni) varying from 6.6 x 10(3) to 32.1 x 10(3) mol[C2H4]/mol[Zr] h. The C-13 NMR spectra of the copolymers showed that the branch contents of the polymers increase as the x(Ni) increase in the medium promoting the production of polymers with a wide range of melting point (T-m) (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. The cyanate-bridged cyclopalladated compound [Pd(C(2),N-dmba)(mu-NCO)](2) (dmba=N,N-dimethylbenzylamine) reacts in acetone with pyrazole (pz), 3,5-dimethylpyrazole (dmpz), imidazole (imz) and 2-methylimidazole (mimz) to give [Pd(2)(C(2),N-dmba)(2)(mu-NCO)(mu-pz)] (1), [Pd(2)(C(2),N-dmba)(2)(mu-NCO)(mu-dmpz)] (2), [Pd(C(2),N-dmba)(NCO)(imz)] (3) and [Pd(C(2),N-dmba)(NCO)(mimz)] (4), respectively. The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and TG. The thermal decomposition of the compounds occurs in three consecutive steps and the final decomposition products were identified as Pd(0) by X-ray powder diffraction. The thermal stability order of the complexes is 2 > 3 > 1 > 4.

The freshwater planktonic alga Kirchneriella aperta was grown in batch cultures to stationary growth phase. Copper and lead complexation properties of the exudate from stationary and exponential growth phases were determined by titrations monitored by ion-selective electrodes. Molecular weight fractionation dialysis) and analysis of the titration data (Scatchard Plot) revealed that K. aperta releases metal-complexing ligands. Copper is associated with low and high molecular weight compounds, whereas lead forms complexes with only high molecular weight compounds. Gas-liquid chromatography showed that mannose and rhamnose make up 74% of the total high molecular weight organic material, with uronic acids present at 19%.

We determined the effects of losartan and CGP42112A (selective ligands of the AT1 and AT2 angiotensin receptors, respectively) and salarasin (a relatively nonselective angiotensin receptor antagonist) on urinary volume and urinary sodium and potassium excretion induced by administration of angiotensin II (ANG II) into the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of conscious rats. Both the AT1 and AT2 ligands and salarasin administered in the presence of ANG II elicited a concentration-dependent inhibition of urine excretion, but losartan inhibited only 75% of this response. The IC50 for salarasin, CGP42112A, and losartan was 0.01, 0.05, and 6 nM, respectively. Previous treatment with saralasin, CGP42112A and losartan competitively antagonized the natriuretic responses to PVN administration of ANG II, and the IC50 values were 0.09, 0.48, and 10 nM, respectively. The maximum response to losartan was 65% of that obtained with saralasin. Pretreatment with saralasin, losartan, and CGP42112A injected into the PVN caused shifts to the right of the concentration-response curves, but the losartan concentrations were disproportionately greater compared with salarasin or CGP42112A. The IC50 values were 0.06, 0.5, and 7.0 for salarasin, CGP42112A, and losartan, respectively. These results suggest that both AT1 and AT2 receptor subtypes in the PVN are involved in ANG II-related urine, sodium, and potassium excretion, and that the inhibitory responses to AT2 blockade are predominant. Despite vast efforts and expenditures in the past few decades, malaria continues to kill millions of persons every year, and new approaches for disease control are urgently needed. To complete its life cycle in the mosquito, Plasmodium, the causative agent of malaria, has to traverse the epithelia of the midgut and salivary glands. Although strong circumstantial evidence indicates that parasite interactions with the two organs are specific, hardly any information is available about the interacting molecules. By use of a phage display library, we identified a 12-aa peptide-salivary gland and midgut peptide 1 (SM1)-that binds to the distal lobes of the salivary gland and to the luminal side of the midgut epithelium, but not to the midgut surface facing the hemolymph or to ovaries. The coincidence of the tissues with which parasites and the SM1 peptide interact suggested that the parasite and peptide recognize the same surface ligand. In support of this hypothesis, the SM1 peptide strongly inhibited Plasmodium invasion of salivary gland and midgut epithelia. These experiments suggest a new strategy for the genetic manipulation of mosquito vectorial capacity.

Mononuclear palladium(II) complexes containing both pyrazole-type ligands and thiocyanate, of general formula [Pd(SCN) 2(L) 2] {L = pyrazole (HPz) and l-phenyl-3-methylpyrazole (phmPz)} have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, i.r. and n.m.r. spectroscopy and by single crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The Pd atom in these structures lies on the crystallographic inversion center; in a square-planar coordination geometry made by two sulfur and two nitrogen atoms of the ligands, both in trans positions.
