Glassy films of Ga10Ge25S65 with 4 mu m thickness were deposited on quartz substrates by electron beam evaporation. Photoexpansion (PE) (photoinduced increase in volume) and photobleaching (PB) (blue shift of the bandgap) effects have been examined. The exposed areas have been analyzed using perfilometer and an expansion of 1.7 mu m (Delta V/V approximate to 30%) is observed for composition Ga10Ge25S65 exposed during 180 min and 3 mW/cm(2) power density. The optical absorption edge measured for the film Ge25Ga10S65 above and below the bandgap show that the blue shift of the gap by below bandgap photon illumination is considerable higher (Delta E-g = 440 meV) than Delta E-g induced by above bandgap illumination (Delta E-g = 190 meV). The distribution of the refraction index profile showed a negative change of the refraction index in the irradiated samples (Delta n = -0.6). The morphology was examined using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The chemical compositions measured using an energy dispersive analyzer (EDX) indicate an increase of the oxygen atoms into the irradiated area. Using a Lloyd's mirror setup for continuous wave holography it was possible to record holographic gratings using the photoinduced effects that occur in them. Diffraction efficiency up to 25% was achieved for the recorded gratings and atomic force microscopy images are presented. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper reports on a study of the: effect of replacing CoO by MnO2 on the sintering and electrical propel-ties of the 98.95% SnO2 + (1 - x)% CoO + x% MnO2 + 0.05% Ta2O5 system. All the samples were compacted into pellets and sintered at 1300 degrees C for 1 h, when they reached densities of about 98% of the theoretical density. An X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed no other detectable phases other than SnO2. Current-voltage characterization indicated varistor behavior in the systems. The non-linear coefficient (alpha) and breakdown electric field (Eb) increased as the amount of MnO2 was increased. The results are explained in terms of an electric barrier modification, due to the presence of adsorbed negative oxygen species at the grain boundary inter face. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V. B.V. The X-ray reflectivity technique was applied in the study of tin oxide films deposited by sol-gel dip-coating on borosilicate glasses. The influence of the withdrawal speed and temperature of thermal treatment on the film structure was analyzed. We have compared the thermal evolution of the density and the shrinkage of the films with these properties measured for the monolithic xerogel by helium picnometry and thermomechanical analysis. In agreement with the Landau-Levich model, the layer thickness increases by increasing the withdrawal speed. Nevertheless, it decreases with the increase of the thermal treatment temperature, due to the densification process. The values of apparent density are smaller than the skeletal density, which shows that the films are porous. The comparison between the film and the monolith indicates that shrinkage during firing is anisotropic, occurring essentially perpendicular to the coating surface.

Two experiments were conducted to examine the effects of broiler breeder dietary grain source and cage density on maternal antibody (MatAb) transfer to progeny in 2 genetic strains (A and B). Broiler breeders were assigned to 16 litter floor pens and fed either corn- or wheat-based diets. Breeders were administered 4 live vaccines against Newcastle disease virus (NDV). At 23 wk of age, pullets and cocks, which reflected the full BW distribution from each treatment, were moved to a cage breeder house and placed at 1 or 2 hens/cage. Breeders were artificially inseminated at 44 wk (experiment 1) and 52 wk of age (experiment 2). Eggs were collected for 8 d, incubated, and placed in individual pedigree bags at d 19 of incubation. Blood samples from 5 chicks per treatment combination were collected at hatch in both experiments. Spleen and bursa were collected from the same chicks for histomorphometry analyses in experiment 2. In the second experiment, 12 chicks per treatment were placed in cages. Progeny were provided diets based on the same grain (corn or wheat) as their parents. Serum samples were collected at 5, 9, and 13 d of age and analyzed for anti-NDV MatAb. Data were analyzed as a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial design considering strain, dietary grain source, and cage density as main factors. Interaction effects were observed in breeders and progeny. Experiment 1 showed that strain A chicks had lower levels of MatAb when hens were housed at 2 hens/cage rather than 1 hen/cage. The MatAb levels of strain B chickens were not affected by cage density in either experiment. Experiment 2 demonstrated similar effects of cage density on MatAb levels and the area of bursa follicles for both strains. Progeny of breeders fed corn-based diets had smaller spleen white pulp only when hens were housed at 2 hens/cage compared with 1 hen/cage. The results of these experiments suggest that breeder strain and cage-density conditions affected MatAb transfer to progeny and embryo development of spleen and bursa.

A comparative study of two customary routes of ceramics processing applied to the synthesis of SnO2-based varistors is reported in this paper. Devices of equivalent composition were prepared through the Pechini method and through directly mixing the oxides without the addition of anti-agglomerants or binders. The microstructures of the sintered samples were characterised with X-ray diffraction and scanning and transmission electron microscopies. The electrical behaviour of the devices was studied on the basis of the current density versus electric field (J-E) characteristics and impedance spectroscopy measurements. The Pechini method ensures the homogeneity in the distribution of the additives in the tin oxide matrix but the formation of secondary phases seems to be independent of the synthesis route. Devices with similar non-linear coefficients of 18 and 21 were obtained through the mixed oxides route and the Pechini method, respectively. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. To study the influence of Ga addition on photoinduced effect, GaGeS glasses with constant atomic ratio S/Ge = 2.6 have been prepared. Using Raman spectroscopy, we have reported the effect of Ga on the structural behavior of these glasses. An increase of the glass transition temperature T(g), the linear refractive index and the density have been observed with increasing gallium content. The photoinduced phenomena have been examined through the influence of time exposure and power density, when exposed to above light bandgap (3.53 eV). The correlation between photoinduced phenomena and Ga content in such glasses are shown hereby. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Human beings perceive images through their properties, like colour, shape, size, and texture. Texture is a fertile source of information about the physical environment. Images of low density crowds tend to present coarse textures, while images of dense crowds tend to present fine textures. This paper describes a new technique for automatic estimation of crowd density, which is a part of the problem of automatic crowd monitoring, using texture information based on grey-level transition probabilities on digitised images. Crowd density feature vectors are extracted from such images and used by a self organising neural network which is responsible for the crowd density estimation. Results obtained respectively to the estimation of the number of people in a specific area of Liverpool Street Railway Station in London (UK) are presented.

The estimation of the number of people in an area under surveillance is very important for the problem of crowd monitoring. When an area reaches an occupation level greater than the projected one, people's safety can be in danger. This paper describes a new technique for crowd density estimation based on Minkowski fractal dimension. Fractal dimension has been widely used to characterize data texture in a large number of physical and biological sciences. The results of our experiments show that fractal dimension can also be used to characterize levels of people congestion in images of crowds. The proposed technique is compared with a statistical and a spectral technique, in a test study of nearly 300 images of a specific area of the Liverpool Street Railway Station, London, UK. Results obtained in this test study are presented.

In this work it is introduced a new approach to calculate the density of liquids in terms of the energies of the acoustic signals. This method is compared to other methods in the time domain (peak-to-peak amplitudes) and frequency domain magnitudes at a single frequency. It is used a measurement cell based on a multiple reflection technique, and it is developed an acoustic model for the cell. Simulations and experiments using several liquids are presented, showing that the energy method a less sensitive to noise than the other techniques. The relative errors in the density are smaller than 0.2% when compared to the values measured with a pycnometer.

First-principles quantum-mechanical techniques, based on density functional theory (B3LYP level) were employed to study the electronic structure of ordered and deformed asymmetric models for Ba0.5Sr 0.5TiO3. Electronic properties are analyzed and the relevance of the present theoretical and experimental results on the photoluminescence behavior is discussed. The presence of localized electronic levels in the band gap, due to the symmetry break, would be responsible for the visible photoluminescence of the amorphous state at room temperature. Thin films were synthesized following a soft chemical processing. Their structure was confirmed by x-ray data and the corresponding photoluminescence properties measured.

This paper presents a technique for real-time crowd density estimation based on textures of crowd images. In this technique, the current image from a sequence of input images is classified into a crowd density class. Then, the classification is corrected by a low-pass filter based on the crowd density classification of the last n images of the input sequence. The technique obtained 73.89% of correct classification in a real-time application on a sequence of 9892 crowd images. Distributed processing was used in order to obtain real-time performance. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Negative effects of soil compaction have been recognized as one of the problems restricting the root system and consequently impairing yields, especially in the Southern Coastal Plain of the USA. Simulations of the root restricting layers in green house studies are necessary for the development of mechanism which alleviates soil compaction problems in these soils. The selection of three distinct bulk densities based on the standard proctor test is also an important factor to determine which bulk density restricts the root layer. The experiment was conducted to assess the root length density and root diameter of the corn (Zea mays L.) crop as a function of bulk density and water stress, characterized by the soil density (1.2; 1.4, and 1.6 g cm -3), and two levels of the water content, approximately (70 and 90% field capacity). The statistical design adopted was completely randomized design, with four replicates in a factorial pattern of (3 × 2). The PVC tubes were superimposed with an internal diameter of 20 cm with a height of 40 cm (the upper tube 20 cm, compacted and inferior tube 10 cm), the hardpan with different levels of soil compaction were located between 20 and 30 cm of the depth of the pot. Results showed that: the main effects of subsoil mechanical impedance were observed on the top layer indicating that the plants had to penetrate beyond the favorable soil conditions before root growth was affected from 3.16; 2.41 to 1.37 cm cm -3 (P<0.005). There was a significant difference at the hardpan layer for the two levels of water and 90% field capacity reduced the root growth from 0.91 to 0.60 cm cm -3 (P<0.005). The root length density and root diameter were affected by increasing soil bulk density from 1.2 to 1.6 g cm -3 which caused penetration resistance to increase to 1.4 MPa. Soil water content of 70% field capacity furnished better root growth in all the layers studied. The increase in root length density resulted in increased root volume. It can also be concluded that the effect of soil compaction impaired the root diameter mostly at the hardpan layer. Soil temperature had detrimental effect on the root growth mostly with higher bulk densities.

Soil compaction may be defined as the pressing of soil to make it denser. Soil compaction makes the soil denser, decreases permeability of gas and water exchange as well as alterations in thermal relations, and increases mechanical strength of the soil. Compacted soil can restrict normal root development. Simulations of the root restricting layers in a greenhouse are necessary to develop a mechanism to alleviate soil compaction problems in these soils. The selection of three distinct bulk densities based on the standard proctor test is also an important factor to determine which bulk density restricts the root layer. This experiment aimed to assess peanut (Arachis hypogea) root volume and root dry matter as a function of bulk density and water stress. Three levels of soil density (1.2, 1.4, and 1.6g cm-3), and two levels of the soil water content (70 and 90% of field capacity) were used. Treatments were arranged as completely randomized design, with four replications in a 3×2 factorial scheme. The result showed that peanut yield generally responded favorably to subsurface compaction in the presence of high mechanical impedance. This clearly indicates the ability of this root to penetrate the hardpan with less stress. Root volume was not affected by increase in soil bulk density and this mechanical impedance increased root volume when roots penetrated the barrier with less energy. Root growth below the compacted layer (hardpan), was impaired by the imposed barrier. This stress made it impossible for roots to grow well even in the presence of optimum soil water content. Generally soil water content of 70% field capacity (P<0.0001) enhanced greater root proliferation. Nonetheless, soil water content of 90% field capacity in some occasions proved better for root growth. Some of the discrepancies observed were that mechanical impedance is not a good indicator for measuring root growth restriction in greenhouse. Future research can be done using more levels of water to determine the lowest soil water level, which can inhibit plant growth.

A completely randomized design with four replicates in a 3×2 factorial pattern was used. The results showed that mechanical impedance affected root volume positively with soil bulk density of 1.2 and 1.6 g cm-3, enhancing root growth (P>0.0064). Soil water content reduced root growth as root and shoot growth was higher at 70% field capacity than that at 90% field capacity. Shoot growth was not affected by the increase in soil bulk density and this result suggests that soil bulk density is not a good indicator for measuring mechanical impedance in some soils.
