Varying the parameters of the (X) over bar chart has been explored extensively in recent years. In this paper, we extend the study of the (X) over bar chart with variable parameters to include variable action limits. The action limits establish whether the control should be relaxed or not. When the (X) over bar falls near the target, the control is relaxed so that there will be more time before the next sample and/or the next sample will be smaller than usual. When the (X) over bar falls far from the target but not in the action region, the control is tightened so that there is less time before the next sample and/or the next sample will be larger than usual. The goal is to draw the action limits wider than usual when the control is relaxed and narrower than usual when the control is tightened. This new feature then makes the (X) over bar chart more powerful than the CUSUM scheme in detecting shifts in the process mean.

The synthesis, characterization, and electrochemical study of the Zn(II)-Al(III) and Zn(II)-Cr(III) Layered Double Hydroxides (LDHs) containing 2-thiopenecarboxylate as the interlayer anions are described. The LDHs were prepared by the constant pH coprecipitation technique followed by hydrothermal treatment for 72 h. The materials were analyzed by PXRD, FT-IR, C-13 CP-MAS, EDX, TEM, and CV. The presence of the organic heterocyclic anions was confirmed by FT-IR and the related solid-state C-13 NMR data strongly suggested that these were dimerised during coprecipitation. Accordingly, the basal spacing found by the X-ray technique was similar to 15.3 Angstrom, a distance coincident with the formation of bilayers of the intercalated anions. The structural organization of all the new materials was greatly enhanced by hydrothermal treatment, as shown by PXRD. The improved organization of the bilayered structures had a strong influence in the electrochemical behaviour of clay-modified electrodes produced with these materials, such as the diminished resistance to the ionic flow through the LDHs films. This paper presents an economic design of (X) over bar control charts with variable sample sizes, variable sampling intervals, and variable control limits. The sample size n, the sampling interval h, and the control limit coefficient k vary between minimum and maximum values, tightening or relaxing the control. The control is relaxed when an (X) over bar value falls close to the target and is tightened when an (X) over bar value falls far from the target. A cost model is constructed that involves the cost of false alarms, the cost of finding and eliminating the assignable cause, the cost associated with production in an out-of-control state, and the cost of sampling and testing. The assumption of an exponential distribution to describe the length of time the process remains in control allows the application of the Markov chain approach for developing the cost function. A comprehensive study is performed to examine the economic advantages of varying the (X) over bar chart parameters.

The objective of this study was to determine intraocular pressure (IOP) and cardiac changes in normocapnic dogs maintained under controlled ventilation and anesthetized using sevoflurane or desflurane. Sixteen healthy adult mixed-breed dogs, seven males and nine females, weighing 10-15 kg were used. The dogs were randomly assigned to one of two groups composed of eight animals anesthetized with sevoflurane (SEVO) or desflurane (DESF). In both groups, anesthesia was induced with propofol (10 mg/kg), and neuromuscular blockade was achieved with rocuronium (0.6 mg/kg/h IV). No premedication was given. Ventilation was adjusted to maintain end-tidal carbon dioxide partial pressure at 35 mmHg. Anesthesia was maintained with 1.5 minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of sevoflurane or desflurane. In both groups IOP was measured by applanation tonometry (Tono-Pen) before induction of anesthesia. IOP, mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), cardiac index (CI) and central venous pressure (CVP) were also measured 45 min after the beginning of inhalant anesthesia and then every 20 min for 60 min. A one-way repeated measures ANOVA was used to compare data within the same group and Student's t-test was used to assess differences between groups. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Measurements showed normal IOP values in both groups, even though IOP increased significantly from baseline during the use of desflurane. IOP did not differ between groups. CI in the desflurane group was significantly greater than in the sevoflurane group. Sevoflurane and desflurane have no clinically significant effects on IOP, MAP, HR, CI or VCP in the dog.

The VSS X chart, dedicated to the detection of small to moderate mean shifts in the process, has been investigated by several researchers under the assumption of known process parameters. In practice, the process parameters are rarely known and are usually estimated from an in-control Phase I data set. In this paper, we evaluate the (run length) performances of the VSS chart when the process parameters are estimated, we compare them in the case where the process parameters are assumed known and we propose specific optimal control chart parameters taking the number of Phase I samples into account.

Silica gel with a specific area of 382 m2 g-1 and an average pore diameter of 60 Å was chemically modified with 2-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole, for the purpose of selective adsorption of heavy metals ions and possible use as a chemically modified carbon paste electrode (CMCPE). The following properties of this functionalized silica gel are discussed: selective adsorption of heavy metal ions measured by batch and chromatographic column techniques, and utilization as preconcentration agent in a chemically modified carbon paste electrode (CMCPE) for determination of mercury(II). The chemical selectivity of this functional group and the selectivity of voltammetry were combined for preconcentration and determination. ©2006 Sociedade Brasileira de Química.

This study analyzed the histopathology of rabbit skin, previously immunized with SGE2, SGE4, and SGE6 gland extracts prepared from salivary glands of Rhipicephalus sanguineus female with 2, 4, and 6 days of feeding, at the region of the R. sanguineus female feeding lesion 2, 4, and 6 days after tick attachment. In this work, infestation-naïve New Zealand White rabbits were inoculated either with the extracts (test group (TG)) or with phosphate buffer and complete Freund's adjuvant mixture (control group 2 (CG2)). Each extract-inoculated- (TG and CG2) and non-inoculated (CG1) rabbit was subsequently infested with R. sanguineus. Skin biopsies were collected from the rabbit at the tick feeding lesion at 2, 4, and 6 days of feeding. Results revealed that rabbit immunization with gland extracts induced acquisition of resistance against this species. It should be stated that the SGE4 extract was the most effective in developing an immune-inflammatory response against ectoparasites, being this process characterized by the presence of an early and intense inflammatory cell infiltrate. On the other hand, SGE6 extract caused a later appearance of resistance with less infiltrate occurrence and intense edema at the feeding lesion site. As to the inflammatory process deriving from SGE2 extract inoculation, it was the less intense. It was concluded that immunization with different extracts from R. sanguineus female salivary glands did not change microscope features of the inflammatory process, although an earlier or more intense and later response, which was also dependent on the inoculate extract, was noticed. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Objectives Our main objectives were to investigate the affinity properties of endothelial and muscular α1D-adrenoceptors and to characterize the cross-talk between endothelial α1D- adrenoceptors and β2-adrenoceptors in rat carotid. Methods Relaxation and contraction concentration-response curves for phenylephrine (α1-adrenergic agonist) were obtained in carotid rings in absence or presence of increasing concentrations of BMY7378 (α 1D-adrenergic antagonist), combined or not with increasing concentration of ICI-118,551 (β2-adrenergic antagonist). Schild analysis was used to estimate the affinity constant from pA2 values of BMY7378. Key Findings BMY7378 produced an unsurmountable antagonism on phenylephrine-induced relaxation but a surmountable antagonism on phenylephrine-induced contraction. BMY7378 potency was higher in inhibiting the relaxation than the contraction induced by phenylephrine because the rightward shifts induced by BMY7378 were greater in the relaxation. The apparent pA 2 value for BMY7378 in phenylephrine-induced relaxation was greater than in contraction. When combined with ICI-118,551, BMY7378 yielded a surmountable antagonism on phenylephrine-induced relaxation and presented a pA2 value similar to that obtained in phenylephrine-induced contraction. Conclusions Endothelial α1D-adrenoceptors, which mediates rat carotid relaxation, present high ligand affinity because of the cross-talk with β2-adrenoceptors, which explains the higher potency of phenylephrine in inducing relaxation than contraction and the atypical unsurmountable antagonism produced by BMY7378 on phenylephrine-induced relaxation. © 2013 Royal Pharmaceutical Society.

Lanthanide compounds of general formula [Ln2(2,5-tdc) 3(dmf)2(H2O)2] ·2dmf·H2O (Ln = Eu(III) (1), Tb(III) (2), Gd(III) (3) and Dy(III) (4), dmf = N,N′-dimethylformamide and 2,5-tdc2- = 2,5-thiophedicarboxylate anion) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, X-ray powder diffraction patterns, thermogravimetric analysis and infrared spectroscopy. Phosphorescence data of Gd(III) complex showed that the triplet states (T1) of 2,5-tdc2- ligand have higher energy than the main emitting states of Eu(III), Tb(III) and Dy(III), indicating that 2,5-tdc2- ligand can act as intramolecular energy donor for these metal ions. An energy level diagram was used to establish the most relevant channels involved in the ligand-to-metal energy transfer. The high value of experimental intensity parameter Ω2 for the Eu(III) complex indicate that the europium ion is in a highly polarizable chemical environment. The emission quantum efficiency (η) of the 5D0 emitting level of Eu(III) was also determined. The complexes act as possible light conversion molecular devices (LCMDs). © 2013 Elsevier B.V.
