MgB2 samples were prepared using as-supplied commercial 96% boron with strong crystalline phase and the same 96% boron (B) after ball milling. The effects of the properties of the starting B powder on the superconductivity were evaluated. We observed that samples using ball-milled 96% B, in comparison with the one made from the as-supplied 96% B, were character- ized by small grain size, broadened full width at half maximum (FWHM), and enhanced magnetic critical current density (J(c)). J(c) reached 2 x 10(3) Acm(-2) at 5 K and 8 T. The improved pinning of these samples seems to be caused by enhanced grain boundary pinning at high field.

Doped zirconia has been used in electronic applications in the cubic crystalline phase. Ceria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia presents high toughness and can also be applied as solid electrolytes. The tetragonal phase of zirconia can be stabilized at room temperature with ceria in a broad range of composition. However, CeO2-ZrO2 has low sinterability. so it is important to investigate the effect of sintering dopants. In this study the effect of iron, copper. manganese and nickel was investigated. The dopants such as iron and copper lowered the sintering temperature from 1600 degreesC down to 1450 degreesC, with a percentage of tetragonal phase retained at room temperature higher than 98% and also with an increase of the electrical conductivity. The electrical conductivity was measured using impedance spectroscopy. The grain boundary contribution was determined and the activation energy associated with the ionic conduction was 1.04 eV. The dopants can also promote a grain boundary cleanliness verified by blocking effect measurement. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

The effect of Cr2O3 on the electrical properties of the multicomponent ZnO varistors was investigated using voltage-current curves and impedance spectroscopy. The structure and morphological modifications were analysed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. It was observed in samples with addition 0.1 mol% Cr2O3 that there was an improvement in the electrical properties of the varistors, but the increase in concentration had a deleterious effect on the potential barrier at the grain boundary. The excess Cr2O3 segregates at the grain-boundary region and increases the donor concentration, leading to a higher leakage current.

The dielectric properties of (Ba, Sr)TiO3 films were found to be remarkably sensitive to the postannealing treatment atmosphere. This study demonstrates that postannealing in an oxygen atmosphere increases the dielectric relaxation phenomenon and that postannealing in a nitrogen atmosphere produces a slight dielectric relaxation. Such dependence of the dielectric relaxation was related both to oxygen vacancies and to the presence of negatively charged oxygen, trapped at the grain boundary and/or at the electrode/dielectric film interface. The SnO2 based varistor systems recently presented in the literature appear to have a promising potential in commercial applications. Experimental evidence shows that there is a dependence of nonlinear constant values with thermal treatment under different atmospheres. Thermal treatments in oxygen and nitrogen rich atmospheres at 900 degreesC prove this dependence, indicating that the nonlinear constant values are significantly lower when the material is submitted to a nitrogen atmosphere. Moreover, electrical properties can be restored when the varistor is subjected to thermal treatment at the same temperature in an oxygen atmosphere, indicating that the mechanism seems to be reversible. This paper discusses this behavior focusing in the grain boundary region. Ta2O5 mol% concentrations are also analyzed and the results indicate an optimum Ta2O5 concentration of 0.05 mol% for the electrical properties (alpha = 44 and E-B = 6150 V cm(-1)). The physicochemical electronic characteristics of SnO2 render it useful in many technical applications, including ceramic varistors, stable electrodes used in electric glass-melting furnaces and electrometallurgy of aluminum, transparent windows and chemical sensors. The use of ZnO as a sintering aid was explored in this study to obtain SnO2 as a dense ceramic. Compacts were obtained by mechanical mixing of oxides, isostatic pressing at 210 MPa and sintering in situ inside a dilatometer at heating rates of 10degreesC/min. The grain size and microstructure were investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM/TEM). The phases and chemical composition were analyzed by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results indicated that ZnO acts as a densification aid for SnO2, improving its grain growth with additions of up to 2 mol%. ZnO forms a solid solution with SnO2 UP to 1 mol%, above which SnZnO3 precipitates in the grain boundary, potentially inhibiting shrinkage and grain growth. (C) 2004 Kluwer Academic Publishers

Addition of 0.5 mol% of CoO into SnO2 promotes densification of this oxide to 99% of the theoretical density during sintering. TEM in this system reveals that after sintering at 1210 degrees C a secondary phase of Co2SnO4 is precipitated at the SnO2 grain boundaries during cooling. This phase is formed by diffusion of Co ions from the bulk to the grain boundary during sintering leaving needle-like defects at the grain bulk. The high resolution TEM micrograph of this system sintered at 1210 degrees C and 1400 degrees C showed an amorphous grain boundary region low in cobalt, indicating that the Co2SnO4 phase is precipitated from this region. The sintering of ZrO2. MgO . ZnO powder has been investigated by TMA (Thermal Mechanical Analyser) and its phases analysed by XRD (X-ray diffraction pattern). The data obtained from sintering was studied by the Bannister equation and its dominant sintering mechanism was calculated. It was observed that the ZnO addition in the ZrO2. MgO solid solution lead to increased zirconia stabilization, According to the vacancies model, the ZnO addition did not lead to zirconia phases stabilization (PSZ). An analysis of the rate control in the initial stage of the sintering (region I) showed a mechanism of volume diffusion type. In other regions (regions II and III), the grain growth did lead to the Bannister equation deviation, which was observed by SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy). These results were different from those demonstrated by other authors who studied the ZrO2. Y2O3 solid solution and obtained a mechanism of grain boundary diffusion type. Photoconductivity of SnO2 sol-gel films is excited, at low temperature, by using a 266 nm line-fourth harmonic-of a Nd:YAG laser. This line has above bandgap energy and promotes generation of electron-hole pairs, which recombines with oxygen adsorbed at grain boundary. The conductivity increases up to 40 times. After removing the illumination on an undoped SnO2 film, the conductivity remains unchanged, as long as the temperature is kept constant. Adsorbed oxygen ions recombine with photogenerated holes and are continuously evacuated from the system, leaving a net concentration of free electrons into the material, responsible for the increase in the conductivity. For Er doped SnO2, the excitation of conductivity by the laser line has similar behavior, however after removing illumination, the conductivity decreases with exponential-like decay. This text discusses about advantageous, powerful and limitations of admittance and dielectric spectroscopy in the characterization of polycrystalline semiconductors. In the context of polycrystalline semiconductors or dielectric materials, the admittance or dielectric frequency response analyses are shown to be sometimes more useful than impedance spectra analysis, mainly because information on the capacitances or deep trap states are possible to be monitored from admittance or dielectric spectra as a function of dopant concentration or annealing effects. The majority of examples of the application of admittance or dielectric analysis approach were here based on SnO2- and ZnO-based polycrystalline semiconductors devices presenting nonohmic properties. Examples of how to perform the characterization of Schottky barrier in such devices are clearly depicted. The approach is based on findings of the true Mott-Schottky pattern of the barrier by extracting the grain boundary capacitance value from complex capacitance diagram analysis. The equivalent circuit of such kind of devices is mainly consistent with the existence of three parallel elements: the high-frequency limit related to grain boundary capacitances, the complex incremental capacitance at intermediate frequency related to the deep trap relaxation and finally at low frequency region the manifestation of the conductance term representing the dc conductance of the multi-junction device. Electro-optical properties of sol-gel derived 2 mol% antimony or niobium doped tin dioxide films have been measured. The electron density has been calculated considering all the relevant scattering mechanisms and experimental conductivity data measured in the range -197 to 25 degrees C. The results support the hypothesis that both ionised impurity scattering and grain boundary scattering have comparable effects in the resistivity of coatings, for free electron density congruent to 5 x 10(18) cm(-3). We have measured variation of photoconductivity excitation with wavelength using xenon and deuterium lamp as light sources. Results show that the main band in the photoconductivity spectrum is dependent on the spectral light source emission, the excitation peak reaching 5 eV (deuterium lamp). This band is due to the recombination process involving oxygen species and photogenerated electron-hole pairs. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The electrical properties of tin oxide varistors doped with CoO, Nb2O5 and Cr2O3, were investigated using the impedance spectroscopy technique with the temperature ranging from 25 to 400 degrees C. The impedance data, represented by means of Nyquist diagrams, show two time constants with different activation energies, one at low frequencies and the other at high frequencies. These activation energies were associated with the adsorption and reaction of O-2 species at the grain boundary interface. The Arrhenius plots show two slopes with a turnover at 200 degrees C for both the higher and lower frequency time constants. This behavior can be related with the decrease of minor charge carrier density. The barrier formation mechanism was associated with the presence of Cr-Sn at the surface, which promotes the adsorption of the O' and O species which are in turn proposed as being responsible for the barrier formation. An investigation was made to discover how the addition of Cr2O3 affects the microstructural heterogeneity and nonohmic features of the SnO2(Co-x, Mn1-x)O-based varistor system, with x varying from 0 to 1. The presence of Cr2O3 was found to strongly increase the nonohmic features when x = 1. However, the nonohmic features of the system decrease when x drops from 1 to 0, a behavior explained by the increase of the junction heterogeneity within the system's microstructure. accompanied by ail excess of precipitates at the triple point in the grain boundary region due to modified MnO sintering. The presence of these precipitates causes the leakage current to increase in response to the creation of ail ineffective barrier. The effect produced by heat-treating these systems in oxygen- and nitrogen-rich atmospheres suggests that, according to mechanisms previously discussed in the literature, Cr2O3 is more susceptible to oxygen, so that increasing the amount of oxygen in the grain boundary region may improve the system's nonohmic properties.
