We study the effects of a repulsive three-body interaction on a system of trapped ultracold atoms in a Bose-Einstein condensed state. The stationary solutions of the corresponding s-wave nonlinear Schrödinger equation suggest a scenario of first-order liquid-gas phase transition in the condensed state up to a critical strength of the effective three-body force. The time evolution of the condensate with feeding process and three-body recombination losses has a different characteristic pattern. Also, the decay time of the dense (liquid) phase is longer than expected due to strong oscillations of the mean-squared radius.

The phase transition from the non-polar α-phase to the polar β-phase of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) has been investigated using micro-Raman spectroscopy, which is advantageous for being a non-destructive technique. Films of α-PVDF were subjected to stretching under controlled rates and at 80°C, the transition to β-PVDF being monitored by the decrease in the Raman band at 794 cm-1 characteristic of the α-phase, with the concomitant increase in the 839 cm-1 band characteristic of the β-phase. Poling with negative corona discharge was found to affect the a-PVDF morphology improving the Raman bands related to this crystalline phase. This effect is minimized for films stretched to higher ratios. Significantly, corona-induced effects could not be observed with the other experimental techniques, viz. X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy.

We study the phase transition from a dx2-y2 to a dx2-y2+dxy superconductor using the tight-binding model of two-dimensional cuprates. As the temperature is lowered past the critical temperature Tc, first a dx2-y2 superconducting phase is created. With further reduction of temperature, the dx2-y2+dxy phase is created at temperature T=Tc1. We study the temperature dependencies of the order parameter, specific heat, and spin susceptibility in these mixed-angular-momentum states on a square lattice and on a lattice with orthorhombic distortion. The above-mentioned phase transitions are identified by two jumps in specific heat at Tc and Tc1. ©1999 The American Physical Society.

The temperature dependencies of specific heat and spin susceptibility of a coupled dx2-y2 + idxy superconductor in the presence of a weak dxy component are investigated in the tight-binding model (1) on square lattice and (2) on a lattice with orthorhombic distortion. As the temperature is lowered past the critical temperature Tc, first a less ordered dx2-y2 superconductor is created, which changes to a more ordered dx2-y2 + idxy superconductor at Tcl(< Tc). This manifests in two second order phase transitions identified by two jumps in specific heat at Tc and Tc1. The temperature dependencies of the superconducting observables exhibit a change from power-law to exponential behavior as temperature is lowered below Tc1 and confirm the new phase transition. © 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. The thermotropic phase behavior of cationic liposomes in mixtures of two of the most investigated liposome-forming double-chain lipids, dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB) and didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB), was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), turbidity, and Nile Red fluorescence. The dispersions were investigated at 1.0 mM total surfactant concentration and varying DODAB and DDAB concentrations. The gel to liquid-crystalline phase transition temperatures (T-m) of neat DDAB and DODAB in aqueous dispersions are around 16 and 43 degrees C, respectively, and we aim to investigate the T-m behavior for mixtures of these cationic lipids. Overall, DDAB reduces the T-m of DODAB, the transition temperature depending on the DDAB content, but the T-m of DDAB is roughly independent of the DODAB concentration. Both DSC and fluorescence measurements show that, within the mixture, at room temperature (ca. 22 degrees C), the DDAB-rich liposomes are in the liquid-crystalline state, whereas the DODAB-rich liposomes are in the gel state. DSC results point to a higher affinity of DDAB for DODAB liposomes than the reverse, resulting in two populations of mixed DDAB/DODAB liposomes with distinctive phase behavior. Fluorescence measurements also show that the presence of a small amount of DODAB in DDAB-rich liposomes causes a pronounced effect in Nile Red emission, due to the increase in liposome size, as inferred from turbidity results.

A recent and innovative method to include Ti into the columbite precursor has permitted to synthesize 0.9PMN-0.1PT powders with high homogeneity. The present work describes this methodology, named modified columbite method, showing that the reaction between MN(T)and PbO at 800 degrees C for 2 h results in perovskite single-phase. The crystal structure alterations in the columbite and perovskite phases obtained by this methodology and the effects of potassium doping were investigated by the Rietveld method. Changes in the powder morphology, density and weight loss during the sintering process were also studied. Conclusively, potassium does not affect significantly the perovskite amount, but reduces the particle and grain sizes. This dopant also changes the relaxor behavior of 0.9PMN-0.1 PT ceramic, reducing the dielectric loss and enhancing the diffuseness of the phase transition. This letter reports microwave dielectric measurements performed in the antiferroelectric phase of NaNbO3 ceramics from 100 to 450 K. Remarkable dielectric relaxation was found within the antiferroelectric phase and in the vicinity of the ferroelectric-antiferroelectric phase transition. Such dielectric relaxation process was associated with relaxations of polar nanoregions with strong relaxor-like characteristic. In addition, the microwave dielectric measurements also revealed an unexpected and unusual anomaly in the relaxation strength, which was related to a disruption of the antiferroelectric order induced by a possible AFE-AFE phase transition. The recent discovery of a ferroelectric monoclinic phase in the PbZr1-xTixO3 (PZT) system attained the attention of several researchers due to the possibility of understanding the relationships between structural features and piezoelectric properties. The nature of the monoclinic phase in some PZT compositions remains controversial and unclear. In this work, structural phase transitions of PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 ceramic were investigated by infrared spectroscopy as a function of temperature. Studies were centered on nu(1)-stretching modes and corresponding half width Wi as a function of temperature. The occurrence of the anomalies in the infrared spectra as a function of temperature suggests the following monoclinic ( LT) -> monoclinic ( HT) -> tetragonal phase transition were observed at 183 K and at 263 K.

The effect of the micelle-forming surfactant series alkyltrimethylammonium bromide (C(n)TAB, n = 12, 14, 16 and 18) on the thermotropic phase behavior of dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB) vesicles in water was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry at constant 5.0 mM total surfactant concentration and varying individual surfactant concentrations. The pre-, post- and main transition temperatures (T-s, T-p and T-m), melting enthalpy (Delta H) and peak width of the main transition (Delta T-1/2) are reported as a function of the surfactant molar fraction. No clear dependence of these parameters on the C(n)TAB chain length was found. At 5 mM, neat DODAB in water exhibits two transition temperatures, T-s = 32.1 and T-m = 42.7 degrees C, as obtained from the DSC upscans, but not a clear T-p. For every n, except n = 12, T-s vanishes as CnTAB concentration increases and approaches CMC. T-m behaves differently for different n, the longer C(14)TAB and C(16)TAB decrease, while C(18)TAB increases T-m with increasing concentration. The data indicate that changes in T-m, T-s, T-p and Delta H of the transition are related not only to the extent of C(n)TAB affinity to DODAB but also to the surfactant chain length. Accordingly, C18TAB yields a more compact bilayer, thus increasing T-m, while C(14)TAB and C(1G)TAB yield a less organized bilayer and reduce T-m. C(12)TAB does not much affect T-s and T-m, although it yields T-p approximate to 51.6 degrees C. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
