The anisotropy of the effective Lande factor in Al(x)Gal(1-x)As parabolic quantum wells under magnetic fields is theoretically investigated. The non-parabolicity and anisotropy of the conduction band are taken into account through the Ogg-McCombe Hamiltonian together with the cubic Dresselhaus spin-orbit term. The calculated effective g factor is larger when the magnetic field is applied along the growth direction. As the well widens, its anisotropy increases sharply and then decreases slowly. For the considered field strengths, the anisotropy is maximum for a well width similar to 50 angstrom. Moreover, this anisotropy increases with the field strength and the maximum value of the aluminum concentration within the quantum well. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The knowledge of the normal anatomy and variations regarding the management of tumors of the sellar region is paramount to perform safe surgical procedures. The sellar region is located in the center of the middle cranial fossa; it contains complex anatomical structures, and is the site of various pathological processes: tumor, vascular, developmental, and neuroendocrine. We review the microsurgical anatomy (microscopic and endoscopic) of this region and discuss the surgical nuances regarding this topic, based on anatomical concepts.

Chemical characterization as well as spectroscopical study of the L-histidine-europium(III) complex were developed both experimental and theoretically. Molecular mechanics (MM) simulation was performed in order to have indication of the compound structure and the Eu 3+ chemical environment. The Simple Overlap Model (SOM) was applied to predict spectroscopic quantities as 5D 0→ 7F 0/ 5D 0→ 7F 2 intensity ratio, 5D 0→ 7F 1 transition splitting and the intensity Ω λ parameters (λ = 2 and 4). Satisfactory results are obtained with 0.1 and 2/3 as the effective charges of the nitrogen (gN) and oxygen (gO) respectively, and their polarizabilities (α) depend on the distance. © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. The aim of the present study was to analyse the haemodynamic effects induced by the hypothalamic disconnection (HD) caudal or rostral to the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN). Mean arterial pressure (MAP), hindlimb, renal and mesenteric blood flow and vascular conductance (HVC, RVC and MVC, respectively) were measured in urethane (1.2 g/kg, i.v.) anesthetized rats for 60 min after disconnection. HD caudal to the PVN was performed with a double-edged microknife of bayonet shape (R=1 mm, H=2 mm) stereotaxically placed, lowered 2.8 mm caudal to the bregma along the midline. The cut was achieved by rotating the microknife 90° right and 90° left. HD rostral to the PVN was performed with the knife placed 0.8 mm caudal to the bregma. Thirty minutes after the hypothalamic disconnection caudal (HD-C), a decrease in MAP was observed (-14±3 mm Hg), reaching a 60-min decrease of 30±3 mm Hg. Hindlimb conductance increased 10 min after HD (156±14%) and remained elevated throughout the experimental period. On the contrary, we observed a transitory renal vasoconstriction (82±9%, ≤20 min) and a late mesenteric vasodilation, starting at 30 min (108±4%) and reaching 138±6% at 60 min. In rats with HD rostral to the PVN, we only observed minor changes in the cardiovascular parameters. In the MAP, there was a slight decrease 60 min after the hypothalamic disconnection rostral (HD-R) (-9±4 mm Hg). There were no significant changes in HVC. RVC and MVC were increased 60 min after the HD-R (116±12% and 124±11%, respectively). These results suggest that vasodilation in the hindlimb and in the mesenteric bed could contribute to the observed decrease in MAP in HD caudal to PVN rats. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Purpose: This study compared the effect of two postpolymerization heat treatments on the cytotoxicity of three denture base resins on L929 cells using 3H-thymidine incorporation and MTT assays. Materials and Methods: Sample disks of Lucitone 550, QC 20, and Acron MC resins were fabricated under aseptic conditions and stored in distilled water at 37°C for 48 hours. Specimens were then divided into three groups: (1) heat treated in microwave oven for 3 minutes at 500 W; (2) heat treated in water bath at 55°C for 60 minutes; and (3) no heat treatment. Eluates were prepared by placing three disks into a sterile glass vial with 9 mL of Eagle's medium and incubating at 37°C for 24 hours. The cytotoxic effect from the eluates was evaluated using the 3H-thymidine incorporation and MTT assays, which reflect DNA synthesis levels and cell metabolism, respectively. Results: The components leached from the resins were cytotoxic to L929 cells when 3H- thymidine incorporation assay was employed. In contrast, eluates from all resins revealed noncytotoxic effects as measured by MTT assay. For both MTT assay and 3H-thymidine incorporation, the heat treatments did not decrease the cytotoxicity of the materials tested. Conclusion: Resins were graded by 3H-thymidine incorporation assay as slightly cytotoxic and by MTT assay as noncytotoxic. Cytotoxicity of the denture base materials was not influenced by microwave or water bath heat treatment.

A new Hypoptopomatinae, Corumbataia britskii, is described based on specimens recently collected in a tributary of the upper Rio Paraná basin, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. Corumbataia britskii differs from its congeners by having a more depressed head profile (vs. a more rounded head profile in C. cuestae and C. tocantinensis), by having a more developed and conspicuous tuft of enlarged odontodes on the tip of the supraoccipital (vs. its reduced condition found in C. cuestae and C. tocantinensis), and by heaving a partially enclosed arrector fossae (vs. an almost completely enclosed arrector fossae in C. cuestae and C. tocantinensis). We use the Ogg-McCombe Hamiltonian together with the Dresselhaus and Rashba spin-splitting terms to find the g factor of conduction electrons in GaAs-(Ga,Al)As semiconductor quantum wells (QWS) (either symmetric or asymmetric) under a magnetic field applied along the growth direction. The combined effects of non-parabolicity, anisotropy and spin-splitting terms are taken into account. Theoretical results are given as functions of the QW width and compared with available experimental data and previous theoretical works. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We consider what a concern for social justice in terms of social inclusion might mean for teacher education, both practising and prospective, with particular reference to the use of information and communication technology (ICT) in mathematics education taking place at a borderland school. Our discussion proceeds through the following steps: (1) We explore what a borderland position might denote to address what social inclusion might mean. (2) We consider the significance of mathematics education and the use of ICT for processes of social inclusion. (3) We briefly refer to the Interlink Network, as many of our observations emerge as reflections on this project. (4) We present different issues that will be of particular importance with respect to teacher education if we want to establish a mathematics education for social inclusion. These issues concern moving away from the comfort zone, establishing networks, identifying new approaches, moving beyond prototypical research, and getting in contact. This brings us to (5) final considerations, where we return to the notion of social justice. © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2009.

We discuss dynamics of a vibro-impact system consisting of a cart with an piecewise-linear restoring force, which vibrates under driving by a source with limited power supply. From the point of view of dynamical systems, vibro-impact systems exhibit a rich variety of phenomena, particularly chaotic motion. In our analyzes, we use bifurcation diagrams, basins of attractions, identifying several non-linear phenomena, such as chaotic regimes, crises, intermittent mechanisms, and coexistence of attractors with complex basins of attraction. © 2009 by ASME.

Purpose: This paper describes proposed health care services innovations, provided by a system called CAALYX (Complete Ambient Assisted Living eXperiment). CAALYX aimed to provide healthcare innovation by extending the state-of-the-art in tele-healthcare, by focusing on increasing the confidence of elderly people living autonomously, by building on the knowledge base of the most common disorders and respective characteristic vital sign changes for this age group. Methods: A review of the state-of-the-art on health care services was carried out. Then, extensive research was conducted on the particular needs of the elderly in relation to home health services that, if offered to them, could improve their day life by giving them greater confidence and autonomy. To achieve this, we addressed issues associated with the gathering of clinical data and interpretation of these data, as well as possibilities of automatically triggering appropriate clinical measures. Considering this initial work we started the identification of initiatives, ongoing works and technologies that could be used for the development of the system. After that, the implementation of CAALYX was done. Findings: The innovation in CAALYX system considers three main areas of contribution: (i) The Roaming Monitoring System that is used to collect information on the well-being of the elderly users; (ii) The Home Monitoring System that is aimed at helping the elders independently living at home being implemented by a device (a personal computer or a set top box) that supports the connection of sensors and video cameras that may be used for monitoring and for interaction with the elder; (iii) The Central Care Service and Monitoring System that is implemented by a Caretaker System where attention and care services are provided to elders, where actors as Caretakers, Doctors and Relatives are logically linked to elders. Innovations in each of these areas are presented here. Conclusions: The ageing European society is placing an added burden on future generations, as the 'elderly-to-working-age-people' ratio is set to steadily increase in the future. Nowadays, quality of life and fitness allows for most older persons to have an active life well into their eighties. Furthermore, many older persons prefer to live in their own house and choose their own lifestyle. The CAALYX system can have a clear impact in increasing older persons' autonomy, by ensuring that they do not need to leave their preferred environment in order to be properly monitored and taken care of. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Cellulose nanofibrils have been evaluated as reinforcement material in polymeric matrixes due to their potential to improve the mechanical, optical, and dielectric properties of these matrixes as well as its environmental positive footprint. This work describes how banana nanocellulose can be used to replace others not so friendly materials in many applications including, biomaterials, automotive industries and packaging by proved with their mechanical properties. The process used is very mild to the environment and consists of a high pressure fibrillation followed by a chemical purification which affects the fiber morphology. Many fibers characterization processes were used including microscopy techniques and X-ray diffraction to study the structure and properties of the prepared nanofibers and composites. Microscopy studies showed that the used individualization processes lead to a unique morphology of interconnected web-like structure of the fibers. © 2012 Materials Research Society.
