The coordination polymers [Cd(mu-Cl)(2)(HPz)(2)](n) (1) and [Cd(mu-1,3-SCN)(2)(HPz)(2)](n) (2) (HPz = pyrazole) have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Both complexes exhibited chain structures made by linear arrays of Cd(II) bridged by chloro (1) or inversely related 1,3-SCN groups (2) and the pyrazole ligands at the apical. sites. Intermolecular hydrogen bonds and another non-covalent interactions are responsible for the self-assembly of linear chains into 2D networks. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Citrus variegated chlorosis (CVC) and coffee leaf scorch (CLS) are two economically important diseases in Brazil caused by the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa. Strains of the bacterium isolated from the two plant hosts are very closely related, and the two diseases share sharpshooter insect vectors. In order to determine if citrus strains of X. fastidiosa could infect coffee and induce CLS disease, plant inoculations were performed. Plants of coffee, Coffea arabica 'Mundo Novo', grafted on Coffea canephora var, robusta 'Apuatao 2258' were mechanically inoculated with triply cloned strains of X. fastidiosa isolated from diseased coffee and citrus. Three months postinoculation, 5 of the 10 plants inoculated with CLS-X. fastidiosa and 1 of the 10 plants inoculated with CVC-X. fastidiosa gave positive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and/or polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Eight months postinoculation, another six plants inoculated with CVC-X. fastidiosa gave positive PCR results. The two X. fastidiosa strains were isolated from the inoculated plants and showed the same characteristics as the original clones by microscopy, ELISA, and PCR. None of the plants inoculated with sterile periwinkle wilt (PW) medium as controls gave positive reactions in diagnostic tests, and none developed disease symptoms. Six months postinoculation, seven plants inoculated with CLS-X. fastidiosn and eight inoculated with CVC-X. fastidiosa began to develop characteristic CLS symptoms, including apical and marginal leaf scorch, defoliation, and reductions of internode length, leaf size, and plant height, terminal clusters of small chlorotic and deformed leaves, and lateral shoot dieback. We have demonstrated that X, fastidiosa from citrus plants is pathogenic for coffee plants. This has important consequences for the management of CLS disease and has implications for the origin of citrus variegated chlorosis disease.

Background: the paca is a South American rodent with potential as a commercial food animal. We examined paca placenta as part of a wider effort to understand the reproductive biology of this species. Methods: Thirteen specimens between midgestation and term of pregnancy were studied by light and transmission electron microscopy. Results: the placenta is divided into several lobes separated by interlobular trophoblast. Maternal arterial channels and fetal veins are found at the centre of each lobe. In the labyrinth, maternal blood flows through trophoblast-lined lacunae in close proximity to the fetal capillaries. The interhaemal barrier is of the haemomonochorial type with a single layer of syncytiotrophoblast. Caveolae occur in the apical membrane of the syncytiotrophoblast and recesses in the basal membrane, but there is no evidence of transtrophoblastic channels. The interlobular areas consist of cords of syncytiotrophoblast defining maternal blood channels that drain the labyrinth. Yolk sac endoderm covers much of the fetal surface of the placenta. The subplacenta comprises cytotrophoblast and syncytiotrophoblast. There are dilated intercellular spaces between the cytotrophoblasts and lacunae lined by syncytiotrophoblast. In the junctional zone between subplacenta and decidua, there are nests of multinucleated giant cells with vacuolated cytoplasm. The entire placenta rests on a pedicle of maternal tissue. An inverted yolk sac placenta is also present. The presence of small vesicles and tubules in the apical membrane of the yolk sac endoderm and larger vesicles in the supranuclear region suggest that the yolk sac placenta participates in maternal-fetal transfer of protein. Conclusion: the paca placenta closely resembles that of other hystricomorph rodents. The lobulated structure allows for a larger exchange area and the development of precocial young.

Aim: To evaluate the effect of implant length (6 mm vs. 11 mm) on osseointegration (bone-toimplant contact) of implants installed into sockets immediately after tooth extraction.Material and methods: In six Labrador dogs, the pulp tissue of the mesial roots of P-3(3) was removed and the root canals were filled. Flaps were elevated bilaterally, the premolars hemisectioned and the distal roots removed. Recipient sites were prepared in the distal alveolus and a 6 mm or an 11 mm long implant was installed at the test and control sites, respectively. Non-submerged healing was allowed. After 4 months of healing, block sections of the implant sites were obtained for histological processing and peri-implant tissue assessment. Results: No statistically significant differences were found between test and control sites both for hard and soft tissue parameters. The bone-to-implant contact evaluated at the apical region of the implants was similar as well. Although not statistically significant, the location of the top of the bony crest at the buccal aspect was more apical in relation to the implant shoulder at the test compared with the control sites (2.0 +/- 1.4 and 1.2 +/- 1.1 mm, respectively). Conclusions: Shorter implants (6 mm) present with equal osseointegration than do longer implants (11 mm).

Radicular fractures in permanent teeth are uncommon injuries among dental traumas, comprising 0.5-7% of the cases. Fracture occurs most often in the middle-third of the root and rarely at the apical-third. The present paper reports a clinical case of a horizontal radicular fracture located between the middle- and apical-third of a upper left-central incisor followed-up for over 3 years. The tooth was extracted owing to periodontal reasons. Histomorphologically, it showed pulp-vitality preservation and root healing by hard-tissue deposition.

Aim: To study the influence on the healing of soft and hard peri-implant tissues when implants of different sizes and configurations were installed into sockets immediately after tooth extraction.Material and methods: Transmucosal cylindrical implants, 3.3 mm in diameter in the control sites, and conical 5 mm in diameter in the test sites, were installed into the distal socket of the fourth mandibular premolars in dogs immediately after tooth extraction. After 4 months, the hard and soft tissue healing was evaluated histologically. Results: All implants were integrated in mineralized mature bone. Both at the test and control sites, the alveolar crest underwent resorption. The buccal bony surface at the implant test sites (conical; 3.8 mm) was more resorbed compared with the control sites (cylindrical; 1.6 mm). The soft tissue dimensions were similar in both groups. However, in relation to the implant shoulder, the peri-implant mucosa was located more apically at the test compared with the control sites. Conclusion: The present study confirmed that the distance between the implant surface and the outer contour of the buccal alveolar bony crest influenced the degree of resorption of the buccal bone plate. Consequently, in relation to the implant shoulder, the peri-implant mucosa will be established at a more apical level, if the distance between the implant surface and the outer contour of the alveolar crest is small.

Objectives. This study aimed to assess the apical surface morphology of maxillary central incisors resected 3.0 mm from the tooth apex using Zekrya burs or Er:YAG laser, with or without subsequent direct Nd:YAG laser irradiation (apical and buccal surfaces) and indirect irradiation (palatal surface).Study design. Forty maxillary central incisors were instrumented and obturated. The roots were divided into 4 groups according to the root resection method (Zekrya bur or Er: YAG laser -1.8 W, 450 mJ, 4 Hz, 113 J/cm(2)) and further surface treatment (none or Nd: YAG laser -2.0 W, 100 mJ, 20 Hz, 124 J/cm(2)). The teeth were prepared for SEM analysis. Scores ranging from 1 to 4 were attributed to cut quality and morphological changes. The data were analyzed by the Kruskal-Wallis test and by Dunn's test.Results. SEM images showed irregular surfaces on the apical portions resected with Zekrya burs, with smear layer and grooves in the resected dentine and slight gutta-percha displacement and plasticization. on the other hand, apicectomies carried out with Er: YAG laser showed morphological changes compatible with ablated dentine, with rough surfaces and craters. In spite of the presence of plasticized gutta-percha, with the presence of bubbles, an irregular adaptation of the filling material to the root walls was also observed. Direct Nd: YAG laser irradiation of the apical and buccal surfaces of the resected roots resulted in areas of resolidification and fusion in the dentine and cementum, with a vitrified aspect; indirect Nd: YAG laser irradiation of the palatal surfaces yielded a lower number of changes in the cementum, with irregular resolidification areas.Conclusions. There were no differences in terms of cut quality between the use of burs and Er: YAG laser or between the 2 surfaces (apical and buccal) treated with Nd: YAG laser with direct irradiation. However, morphological changes were significantly less frequent on surfaces submitted to indirect irradiation (palatal) when compared with those directly irradiated. The purpose of this case report was to describe the successful long-term conservative management of a root-fractured permanent maxillary right central incisor in an 8-year-old patient. After the initial approach of splinting the traumatized tooth, the patient was followed on a regular basis for 15 years. Clinically, the crown of the root-fractured incisor showed no displacement or discoloration, and thermal tests suggested pulp vitality over the follow-up period. Radiographically, an increase in the diastasis was observed between the apical and coronal fragments due to both the growth of the alveolar process and the healing with interposition of hard and soft tissue between the fragments and confirmed with computed tomography scan in the 15-year follow-up appointment. The synthesis and crystal structure of two complexes resulting from interaction between NiBr2 and triphenylarsine oxide (Ph3AsO) is described. Green and orange complexes can be obtained from the blue, probably tetrahedral complex [NiBr2(Ph3AsO)2], depending on the solvents used for recrystallization. NiBr2·4[(C6H5)3AsO]·8H2O (green): M = 1650.2, P21/c, a = 13.731(2), b = 16.267(3), c = 17.647(2) Å, β = 112.04(1)°, V = 3651.4 Å3, Z = 2, Dx = 1.501 g cm-3, CuKα, λ = 1.54184 Å, μ = 38.67 cm-1, R = 0.039, 3741 unique reflections, 3203 with I > 3σ(I). NiBr2·4[(C6H5)3AsO]·3|2(C6H5CH3)·H2O (orange): M = 1663.7, P1, a = 12.647(8), b = 13.953(5), c = 22.853(6) Å, α = 90.91(3), β = 96.70(4), γ = 111.16(4)°, V = 3727.4 Å3, Z = 2, Dx = 1.482 g cm-3, MoKα, λ = 0.71073 Å, μ = 30.48 cm-1, R = 0.087, 8600 unique reflections, 4293 with I > 3σ(I). In the green complex the Ni(II) ion is sited on a center of symmetry and is octahedrally coordinated to six water molecules, hydrogen bonded to the Ph3AsO molecules and to the bromide anions forming a second coordination sphere in a nearly octahedral arrangement. In the orange complex the cation is pentacoordinated with the four oxygen atoms of the Ph3AsO ligands forming the basis of a tetragonal pyramid and with one Br- anion in the apical position. The absorption spectrum of the orange complex is compared with the spectra of other Ni(II) square pyramidal complexes described in the literature. © 1984.

The testicular stroma of the vampire bat including the testicular capsula and the lamina propria of the seminiferous tubuli, was strongly PAS-positive. This observation was a possible indication of great amounts of structural glycogen and other glycoconjugates at the level of smooth muscle cells; elongated contractile cells and/or collagen frameworks of the tunica albuginea and tubular lamina propria. In the last the basement membranes of the seminiferous tubules were particularly strongly PAS positive, as an indication of their neutral mucosubstances structural composition, previously described (Malmi et al., 1987). The epithelium lining from the cavitary and surface rete testis complex showed low reactivities to mucosubstances; total proteins and lipids and oxidative enzymes studied. Although the apical granulation at the rete testis epithelium showed an intense PAS reactivity with hypothesis of glycoprotein secretion, through the rete. The PAS, Sudan Black B, NADH, MDH and LDH reactions of the testicular interstitium seem correlate to steroid metabolism (biosynthesis and secretion), at the Leydig cells level. The seminiferous epithelium generally had low reactions to all the histochemical studies realized. Particularly in the adbasal compartment the histochemical localizations of NADH diaphorase and LDH were possible related to glycolytic activities and general carbohydrates metabolism, both enzymes, and hydrogen transport, the NADH. The strong PAS, diastase and PAS, and alcian blue pH 2.5 and PAS reactions observed in the adluminal seminiferous epithelium compartment were directly related to the spermatids acrosomal glycoconjugates structuration. Also the SDH localization at this level seems to be related to the mitochondrial activities at the middle piece level in the late spermatids.

Some endodontists use iodoform in Sealapex in order to rend it more radiopac. This procedure is empiric and for this reason we decided to observe, histologically, if the iodoform introduces some modification in the biological properties of Sealapex. Thirty root canals of dogs' teeth were overinstrumented and filled, by lateral condensation technique, with gutta percha points and Sealapex, with or without iodoform. The iodoform was added in two different proportions: 30 mg or 112 mg for one centimeter of the base and one centimeter of the catalyst of Sealapex. The pieces were removed for histological studies, 6 months after the treatment. The histological results showed that Sealapex encourages apical closure by cementum deposition and that the addition of iodoform does not change that biological property.

Pulpal and periodontal tissues of immature incisors of 10 dogs were radiographically and histopathologically evaluated immediately, 7, 15, 30 and 60 days after experimental intrusion induced by mechanical blows. Forty upper central and mesial lateral incisors showing incomplete root formation on radiographs were submitted to intrusive force. After the observation periods, the dogs were killed, two at a time. The hemi-maxilas were removed and processed for histopathologic examination. The traumatized teeth showed accelerated apical formation with reduced radicular length. Pulpal vitality was maintained and the subjacent tissues did not present irreversible changes. All traumatized teeth re-erupted spontaneously.
